The circuits are based on the later 258 Dual Oscillator . . . . PCB's from Dustin Stroh "J3RK" - found via the Muffwiggler forum "Music Tech DIY" section: http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=17

Sequence is from a Eardrill Morphun + 077 Pendulum Ratchet. 158(ish) DIY running through a pair of Lopass Gates (controlled by a 281). Audio is MONO straight out of a Buchla 206 mixer. NO effects."

Benge Abstraxa - All Buchla Release




"Abstraxa - exploring the outer reaches, using the Buchla Electronic Music Box

The six compositions featured on Abstraxa were realised on a Buchla modular synthesiser. Donald Buchla began makng electronic musical instruments in 1963, developing the first Buchla 100 series systems in conjunction with the San Francisco Tape Music Center. These first inventions coincided with the development of Robert Moog's 900 Series modular systems over on the west coast of america, and as such belong to the very first generation of commercially available synthesisers. One intersting aspect is that Don Buchla is still developing and manufacturing his modular systems, using the same module format (now 200e series) that he introduced 50 years ago. The current 200e modules utilise a combination of analogue and digital components

The Buchla has a very unique way of producing sound, using electronic voltages to control the sound sources (oscillators and noise generators), sound modifiers (gates, filters, phase shifters, modulators, etc) and event timing generators (sequencers, random sources, pulse generators, etc). Systems can be built up from the available modules to suit the needs of the composer. The power of the system lies in the inter-modulation capabilities. This means that extremely deep patches can be set up with a myriad of connections interacting together in complex ways to produce evolving and self-generating soundscapes. It is anagolous to working with a living organism as opposed to a static machine, a brain rather than a computer

The pieces presented here were recorded to tape using overdubbing in places. Additional reverberation and delay lines were also incorporated into the system. See below for a full module list

The main mix of all 4x LPG's are fed into the 285e Balanced Modulator section for even more grumbling.

Thanks to the Eardrill 077 Pendulum Ratchet for nice pulse divisions . . . and the 266e SOU helps take the edge off the clock."

"So someone mentioned using the Buchla 291e Triple Morphing Filter as a VCO....

To do this you feed the output of each channel back into itself.... Then you have 3x feedback VCO's....

The VC part comes from the ability to externally control each of the filter frequency stages via a CV source....

On top that fun, the 291e module allows for things like:
- 8x stage step sequencing
- 3x VC Bandpass Filters per stage
- per stage, per VCF external modulation control via am/bw/fm
- per stage, per VCF: VCA
- and loads more!!!!

SO this vid is a really short test of these feedback VCO's, so that you can hear how rich they can sound and behave.

The sequence is created on the 291e - but I also patched the 255 into the Freq inputs to allow per VCO external pitch control - also using a Eardrill Source Selector (along w/ 077 Pendulum Ratchet & the 255 again) for sequence transposition

Other things happening (as this vid is a short 'for fun' demo) but just to be clear: you are hearing ONLY the 291e patched as a TRIPLE OSCILLATOR in the sequence . . . . . pretty cool possibilities here!"

"1st patch/improv using/featuring the Eardrill ModuleModule & 077 Pendulum Ratchet.

The MM is loaded with:

1x Slew - (w/ "peakalope" peak detector/pulse generator)

1x D.LFO - dual low frequency oscillators (w/individual external sync and freq control)

1x Source Selector (4x channel, dual ins/outs - both voltage and pulse - stage selectable and external reset)

I used these modules in this patch (along w/ a Buchla 255 Control Voltage Processor - for the "note pitches) as an incredibly powerful (and fun) way to program an analog sequencer - event generator. The main sequence tone comes from the 261e VCO. the background pulsating drone is from a Verbos 258v VCO.

I love the Buchla 200e - and along w/ modules like these from Eardrill and Verbos . . . it really allows for a great classic analog style interface."

The main clock rate goes from about eight and a half seconds per tick up to 10 ms per tick. Pendulum/Ratchet drawing
Transport controls
These do the obvious things to the clock. Sync does one non-obvious thing, though. In addition to syncing the clock, it also resets all the divisors.
Pulse Density Modulation
With the Density control all the way up, the "tock" output is the same as the "tick" output. Turning Density down creates a pulse train that randomly picks pulses from the clock to send out the tock output.

Division A and B.
These are variable Ratchet Divisors that can be freely positioned from a divisor of one to over a hundred. The divisor values can be limited to some interesting number sets, including primes and the fibonacci series. The limit options are arranged in decreasing density:

"I always though that my Buchla system would benefit from a dedicated module to generate a bunch of correlated pulses. Sure, you can use sequencers and function generators for this sort of thing, but having a clock source generating a wide variety of pulses of different flavors was very appealing to me, so to that end, I came up with the Pendulum/Ratchet."

Update via wavedeform in the comments: "Just a note to say that this run is moving forward. I'm taking deposits until 6/15/09, after which I'll order board sets and panels.
