'Für Klaus' - Tribute to Klaus Schulze, a Eurorack Modular Performance #eurorack #synth #ajhsynth

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"On this channel Sunday 8th @7pm GMT - a 13-minute track recorded as a single-take performance, and a purpose-made tribute/dedication to the late Klaus Schulze. The piece is inspired by his music directly, creating some sounds akin to those he used in the late 1970's, even including one of his sequences. Much of it was composed and rehearsed, whilst some of it was improvised, but I suspect much less so than Schulze's works, which were often much longer, involving more improvisation and more instruments. This piece consists of just three voices across 4 audio tracks/channels, altered or converted in real-time during the performance to achieve different sounds.

As a creator of electronic music, Schulze was one of the most significant influences for me (the video creator). His music, his attitude towards it in the interviews I read of his, and the way he worked alone to create dense, fascinating, complete musical performances and soundscapes, at a time when the technology was in it's infancy, and before later technologies such as complex computer sequencing, sound creation, processing and mixing were available. As a solitary musician, his was a great, empowering example. His bravery to improvise, experiment, and co-exist with imperfections, embracing them rather than fearing them, makes me warm to the artist and the music even more. Schulze used, among others, an early Minimoog (leads) and a large Moog modular system, which he customised with additional modules over the following years. Since the core AJH MiniMod system is directly based on the early, more desirable R.A.Moog version of the Minimoog, yet is entirely modular, it makes a great choice for this homage to one of electronic music's greatest pioneers.

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

DreamsOfWires - AJH Synth Mini Mod

Published on Feb 11, 2017 DreamsOfWires

"I doubt very much this recording does it justice, but it's certainly the most beautiful sounding synth I've owned. After 3 months of creative block, burnout, or whatever it was, it's so nice to come back to this instrument.

Recorded across 4 tracks, to a metronome, but no midi or sequencing, just played manually (rather roughly). All sounds are from the Mini Mod system: the opening drone and following melody were just one VCO through the Ring SM module using it's two sub-octave generators, the other sounds either use all three VCO's, or one combined with noise from the Glide module. AUFX Dub and Space provide the delay and reverb.

Video footage is from a recent trip to Northumberland."

Polyphonic: Using the Keystep Pro for 4-Voice Polyphony in Eurorack Modular - with AJH Synth MiniMod

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This video demonstrates the Arturia Keystep Pro controlling a MiniMod system in polyphonic mode, and show's how to enable up to 4 voices of polyphony on the Keystep Pro controller keyboard. The MiniMod system uses just 4 VCO's, envelope generators, VCF's and VCA's to supply 4 simple, single-oscillator voices, which are then complimented by either an LFO or noise source to add interest to the sound. This really is about as spartan as you can get for a modular 4-voice setup, so adding further modules would greatly expand it's sound palette, but this is just a proof of concept. Since it's fully modular, even with such a simple voice structure a surprising range of sounds can be achieved.

This was partly inspired by the earliest polyphonic synths, which were initially huge modular systems controlled by polyphonic keyboard controllers, and then the first polyphonic Oberheim synths, which controlled 4 or 8 individual monophonic synth voice modules individually (the superb-sounding SEM), each needing to be setup and tuned. However, this meant that each voice was free to be whatever the user wanted - similar or completely different than the others, something conventional analogue polysynths can't do.

The Gemini 2412 is used here as it has extensive multi-mode filter options, and conveniently contains 2 fully-featured VCF's per module, but also since it is directly based on the filter from the classic SEM module. A pair of Contour Generators serves as a simple and convenient dual envelope per module, although here they are shared for both VCF and/or VCA.
It's unlikely that many would buy a complete modular system purely to use as a polyphonic synth, but as your system grows it may eventually provide sufficient modules to be used in a poly configuration, even just as 2 voices, such as here: [posted here]

POWER: This module setup and PSU is just an example of the concept - it isn't necessary to arrange the modules in this way, and you should always ensure your power supply is sufficient to provide significantly more power to your selection of modules than is needed, across the +12V, -12V, and 5V power lines. For example, in this setup I'm using roughly 400mA on the -12V rail, but the PSU only provides 500mA to -12V, so this is pushing it a little too close to the limit than is ideal. Modulargrid.net is a great tool to use for designing your system and calculating your power needs, but also consult your PSU's documentation for advice on power usage.

MODULES USED:
Vintage Transistor Core VCO x4
Gemini 2412 x2
Contour Generators x2
Discrete Cascaded VCA x4
Dual LFO + VCA x1 (optional)
Entropic Doom x1 (as a noise source, optional)
Precision Voltages (as an offset for Gemini D-FCV, optional)
V-Scale x1 (as a buffered multiple, optional)

Mini System 'Berlin School' Performance - 2 Monosynths in 1 Case | AJH Synth Analog Eurorack Modular

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A demonstration of a modest 6U 84hp Eurorack modular system by AJH Synth, incorporating a 3-VCO MiniMod voice based on the R.A. Moog Minimoog, Gemini 2412 dual VCF based on the Oberheim SEM filter, and a couple of very useful utility modules, particularly the Ring SM. This setup can be used as 2 separate synth voices, demonstrated here in this 'Berlin school- inspired performance.

The complete MiniMod voice is a combination of 7 modules directly based on the first, more sought-after version of the Minimoog, along with it's characteristic behaviours. The Transistor Ladder Filter behaves in the same way, 'Emphasis' (resonance) robbing a little of the low frequencies at higher levels, the Contour Generators having a cumulative/stacking level behaviour when triggered rapidly, and the Discrete Cascaded VCA (also the VCF input levels) driving and distorting the signals when pushed.

Here the MiniMod is used as a 2-voice monosynth, with one of it's VCO's being donated to the lower voice, filtered by the Gemini multi-mode filter. It sounds much bigger than a single VCO voice thanks to the Ring SM. The Ring SM provides a Moog CP3-based 5-channel mixer, a 3-axis analogue ring modulator based on that from the vintage EMS Synthi/VCS3, and particularly useful in this patch - 2 sub-bass generators, providing -1 and -2 sub-octaves to an incoming signal. This produces shaped sine waves, as opposed to more hollow-sounding square waves often used by other synths or modules, so they sound warmer, fuller and fatter.

The Muting Mixer is used as a second VCA here for the Gemini voice. However, it has a 'Distort' feature that emulates the old Minimoog trick of sending the headphone output to the VCF input to create a feedback loop and some additional overdrive/distortion. As a result it can make a good alternative to the Discrete Cascaded VCA, but even the latter can add significant drive to the signal. This module could also be used to simulate the Minimoog's VCO and noise switches, but for 5 signals of your choice, as it features illuminated 'Mute' switches, allowing sound sources to be instantly switched in and out of a patch, and at their own volume levels.

The Dual LFO + VCA is especially useful here, as it gives plenty of modulation, without having to sacrifice a VCO for that purpose. It also has a built-in VCA, allowing it's level to be controlled externally, perhaps with an envelope or Mod wheel for delayed or expression-controlled vibrato.

This rig also has a third envelope in the powerful DH-ADSR, but it's not used in this patch, along with the Precision Voltages, which among other uses allows pitch intervals of 2 VCOs to be controlled accurately and conveniently, selecting between octaves and semitones set by the rotary pots and switches. This is super useful for live performances.

Meet us and the modules in person this year at Superbooth 23, Berlin, on May 11th to 13th.

DreamsOfWires - AJH Mini Mod 'Moog days revisited'

Published on Oct 7, 2016 DreamsOfWires

"A re-recording of a video I originally made using the Moog Slim Phatty a couple of years ago. I thought it'd be fun to try it with some authentic Minimoog sounds using 3 oscillators. In the original recording I used a very dense Eventide Space patch, which was almost like an instrument in itself (albeit a rather nice one), and so it added a lot to the sound that wasn't really there to begin with. Unfortunately, I sold that some time ago, so this time I'm using Kymatica's AUFX:DUB and Virsyn's Audio Reverb within AUM on an iPad - In this version the effects are a little more modest so that you can hear the true sound of the synth better. I first recorded the track dry into a separate channel, then used the fileplayer to send the recording through the effects so that I could experiment with different settings and levels, then record a mix once I was happy with it (which you can see in the top-left of the video).
The video is far from what I wanted it to be, but my PC has almost completely died over the last couple weeks, so editing was near impossible. I'll have to get a new CPU and motherboard soon I guess.
The original track is on my album here: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com/..."

DreamsOfWires - AJH Synth Mini Mod system

Published on Sep 21, 2016 DreamsOfWires

"Comprising 1x glide/noise, 3x VCO, 1x ladder filter, 1x dual contour generator, and 1x VCA. I'm currently borrowing this beautiful sounding (and looking) instrument, so expect more videos of it to follow. For more information about it visit here: http://www.ajhsynth.com/Minimod.html
I've have a soft spot for the sound of the Minimoog for a long time, but I couldn't afford or justify the cost of an original, bearing in mind also the lack of flexibility, connectivity and risk of expensive repairs. So, understandably, I re-wrote my letter to Santa when I heard about the Mini Mod. It has the sound of the original Minimoog with the flexibility of a modular. Perfect.
The
All sounds are from the Mini Mod with a little delay and reverb. After I'd recorded the sequences (as seen in the video) I overdubbed a bass drone on another audio track and some additional sounds at the end. Beyond that I don't want to explain it in anymore detail, it just is what it is - I hope my videos are enjoyable or just provide some inspiration, but they're not intended as tutorial videos. I'm not knowledgeable enough for that.
Video locations are Amble and Warkworth Castle, Northumberland, UK."

AJH Synth NEW! MULTI BURST ENVELOPES

NEW! MULTI BURST ENVELOPES - An 8-shape envelope generator, with multiple time-controlled repeats video upload by AJH Synth Official

"An introduction and brief overview of the new MULTI BURST ENVELOPES from AJH Synth." Video by DreamsOfWires

The MiniMod Multi Burst Envelopes module generates variable length bursts of repeating envelopes that can change over time, with CV control of all functions.

The BURSTS control selects a 'Burst Sequence' of between 1 and 40 bursts. The envelope shape of a burst is chosen with the rotary switch, or it can be varied using an external CV, so that it is even possible to chose a different envelope shape for each individual burst in a sequence.

The width of the envelope (i.e. the attack and decay time) is varied with the P-WIDTH control and this can also be CV controlled as a sequence is progressing, so it is possible to vary the envelope speed of each individual envelope burst while a Burst Sequence is running.

The repeat time of individual bursts in a Burst Sequence is set with the LFO Rate control. The LFO rate can be varied with an external CV as a sequence is progressing, so the gap between envelopes can speed up or slow down over time. An external clock can also time the bursts in a burst sequence instead of, or in addition to the internal LFO. Bursts can also be manually incremented with the CLK push button.

The SLOPE control allows Bursts to start quietly and build in level to maximum, or they can start at full level and then reduce in level as the Burst Sequence progresses. In the centre position all Bursts are of equal level.

Full USER GUIDE video available 30 minutes after this video goes live.

'Old School Jam' All-modular, Step Sequencer, Bucket Brigade Delay, Eurorack FX, and no quantiser!

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Un-quantised, old-school sequencer fun: Inspired by early sequenced electronica such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, much of whose music used a Moog 960 sequencer, which didn't have quantising features, and were sometimes difficult to tune accurately or reliably. Such as the track 'Phaedra' by Tangerine Dream, during which the Moog performing the opening pattern had to be re-tuned during the actual recording, and it was left on the album! Yet it sounds great, it's imperfect tuning adds so much to the atmosphere of the music, irrespective if it was deliberate or a 'happy accident'.

Here I use an un-quantised sequencer, in fact an Erica Synths Sequential Switch, with it's CV expander that turns it into a great little 8-step sequencer. I also run it through the AJH Synth CV Mix, to offset the CV going to the oscillator, allowing me to push the output into the negative CV range. I then send this shifted signal to the VCO's frequency modulation input instead of the 1V/Oct... just to make it more difficult to tune! Seriously though, this was a fun experiment, and taking off the digital stabilisers (or quantisers) once in a while is highly recommended, and a good learning experience. This was an all-modular session - no external FX or mixing, just Eurorack modules for all functions.

MiniMod & Ribbon Controller - AJH Synth Eurorack Ambient with Gemini 2412 'SEM' style Dual Filter

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A 2-voice ambient performance using the Doepfer ribbon controller with the AJH Synth MiniMod eurorack modular system, here incorporating the Gemini 2412 'SEM-based' dual multimode filter/VCF. Simple 2 note/2 VCO chords are shifted in pitch with the Ribbon, and pressure sensitivity used to control the Gemini's overall frequency, and the level of pitch vibrato from the Dual LFO module, which has a built-in VCA. A third VCO via the Transistor Ladder Filter creates a single oscillator drone sound (a square wave with pulse width modulation/PWM), whilst the Dual LFO also modulates the frequency of this VCF, and both VCF's on the Gemini in position to each other. The Gemini is used as a stereo filter, with both going of it's VCF's going to separate VCA's and audio channels to creates a stereo panning effect.
The Gemini can be used as 2 filters in series, or in stereo with a single audio input signal, but here both filters are processing a different VCO via their individual inputs, whilst the global Dual Frequency CV function of the module's central mix bus section allows them both to be controlled in unison, in addition to, or instead of their own individual CV control. This offers a huge amount of flexibility.
A suitably large reverb is added in post to add a film/movie soundtrack quality to the sound.

AJH New Module & Melodic Performance: Chance Delay, Wave Swarm, Gemini 2412, Fixed Filter Bank 914

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A melodic track performed using a sequencer with the new Chance Delay module during the opening section. It also uses the Wave Swarm, Gemini 2412 and Fixed Filter Bank 914 together to creating backing chords/drone. The melodic sequence sound is just a single VCO going into the Ring SM, which adds a -1 and +1 sub/octave generated from the incoming VCO, and some white noise via its mixer.

Reverb and dual delay is added in a DAW.

AJH MiniMod Keyz Complete System - Minimoog-inspired Eurorack Synth & Keyboard Controller

video upload by

"Complete AJH Synth systems now available.

First up the MiniMod Keyz - equivalent of a Minimoog, plus extra modules, pre-installed inside a Cre8audio NiftyKeyz Eurorack case and keyboard controller.

This makes a complete Eurorack modular synth that's ready to go straight out of the box.

Our package includes the standard MiniMod voice - directly based on the original R.A. Moog version of the Minimoog, along with a RING SM, Tap Tempo VC-LFO, and the new Low Fat HP filter.

It is fitted with custom Dark American Walnut end cheeks, for a more vintage look, and comes with a selection of patch cables, so that you're ready to start making the floor rumble right out of the box.

The Ring SM is a 5-channel Moog CP3 mixer, EMS Synthi/VCS3 based Ring Modulator, and a very rich-sounding, simultaneous 2 octave sub-bass generator. User Guide:

The Tap Tempo VC-LFO is a very complex modulation source, with 16 common and unusual wave shapes, including stepped and sloped random voltages. Every element can be voltage-controlled, and can be clocked by external modules/sequencers, or act as a master clock, clock divider/multiplier. User Guide:

The Low Fat is a voltage-controlled 2hp high pass filter, and a great compliment to the classic, huge-sounding Transistor Ladder Filter. The Fattest filter in town needs to slim down sometimes! User Guide:

The NiftyKeyz is a 4-octave keyboard controller, with a large host of features, including arpeggiator, 4-voice polyphonic control, built-in LFO, and much more. Check out the website:

This pairs with the MiniMod system well, as it provides everything from Minimoog-like functionality, to way beyond, whilst maintaining the classic vintage sound and honouring the circuitry of the awesome original.

DreamsOfWires - AJH Ring SM & Mini Mod System

Published on Nov 16, 2016 DreamsOfWires

"Big moon, small view - Despite awful weather, I managed to catch a glimpse of the 'Supermoon'.

Music: 2 VCO's were tuned to a set pitch, whilst the pitch of the third was controlled by a keyboard. All three were then combined using the Ring SM, and sent to the ladder filter, along with varying amounts of the 3rd VCO and the two sub octaves from the Ring SM. The 'pad' sound in the background was made using the 3 VCO's in the same fashion, but sent directly to the filter.

It was recorded in Cubasis on an iPad, using Virsyn's Audio Reverb.

This was improvised and recorded/filmed on the fly, so the results are far from ideal.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond - A Pink Floyd classic Minimoog lead sound recreated on a MiniMod system

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"How to guide with Patch Sheets: An interpretation of the classic lead sound from the intro to Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part 1', which is believed to have been recorded using the Minimoog synthesizer. The AJH Synth Mini Mod system is a Eurorack modular recreation of this classic analogue synth, and in this video just the modules from the standard Mini Mod system are used to create the lead sound. An additional, simple background drone is created using another system, comprising 3 VCOs, Wave Swarm, Ring SM and Sonic XV Diode Ladder Wave filter.

Green dots show approximate pot and switch positions. Pots and switches that do not have green dots are not used in this patch, and should be left at their zero or off positions.
This patch uses only the modules contained within a standard MiniMod voice, which is the equivalent of a Minimoog, simply for a little more authenticity, as this is the synth that was believed to be used on the original Pink Floyd recording. The version here is our interpretation of it, and not intended to be an exact match, so opinions will differ as to the setting used, but we feel it's pretty close. For example, it's possible the Minimoog's MOD MIX control was used on the original to mix VCO 3 and Noise modulation to affect the pitch and filter, but here it would require an additional module to mix both signals, and simply adding Noise as audio sounds very similar, whilst allowing greater control of both.

Eurorack, Keystep & A Fallen Hero (Berlin-style Improvisation)

Published on Jun 16, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"Old school Sci-fi inspired jam using a Eurorack modular system including AJH Synth modules (see gear list) and 2 Arturia Keysteps. One Keystep is sending pitch to the XVCO, which is filtered by the Sonic XV, to create a continuous drone, but it is simultaneously transposing the other Keystep's sequencer (via Midi). This sequencer is is controlling the 3 AJH VCO's, which are sent to both the Ladder filter and Gemini on separate audio channels. The Gemini is being used as a stereo filter here, in Dual mode, both sides being modulated in opposition to create stereo movement. All 3 audio sources are then mixed in real time using AUM on the iPad.

I'm dedicating this to one of my childhood heroes who passed away this month - actor Paul Darrow, whose charismatic, witty, and vividly memorable portrayal of the character 'Avon' in an old UK sci-fi TV series called Blakes's 7 has stayed with me throughout my life. Ironically, I re-watched the entire series just recently. I like to think he escaped the final gun battle, and made it away on the Liberator (ship) to some distant refuge with a cargo-hold full of riches.

AJH Synth Eurorack Ambient Ditty - revisiting an early recording

Published on Jun 1, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"Re-recording something I originally uploaded featuring a Moog Minitaur with Sunvox on an iPad. It's a very simple piece, but here I've used entirely analog sounds from the AJH eurorack system. The background melody is kind of a pseudo two-part polyphonic voice using two separate VCO's, envelopes, and the Gemini filter in Dual mode. The other part is a third VCO through the Ring SM, providing up to two suboctaves, and then into the Ladder Filter. An external LFO is modulating the pulse width of this VCO. The Keystep's Mod output is patched to the Ladder Filter's frequency. Gear list at the bottom.

I wanted it to sound a little less gnarly than the original, with less resonance, hopefully capturing a little more of the MiniMod's warmth and character. Here's a link to the original: [originally posted here]

FC Waverunner LFO, Korg SQ-1 (pattern - parallel mode) and Arturia Keystep (melody), recorded into AUM on an iPad via iConnectAUDIO4+ interface, with EOS2 reverb and Dubstation 2 delay. The Eurorack case was made by me and inspired by the Moog Model 15. Filmed on a Lumix GH-4 and iPhone SE, edited in Final Cut X on an elderly Crashbook Pro."

Beatstep Pro - First Trip & Discovering Uses (Eurorack improvisation)

Published on Dec 1, 2019

"First trip with the Arturia Beatstep Pro - found a way of making use of the drum triggers with the AJH Precision Voltages module to switch on and off note and octave intervals between two VCO's. I'm also experimenting with incorporating a MIDI keyboard for use in future live performances - this provides a convenient way to switch between keyboard and sequencer control over two synth voices (without re-patching), and in the case of this recording, another way of transposing sequences.

The AJH Synth Precision Voltages module is a convenient tool for adding note intervals and switching octaves for 1v/oct modules and instruments. In this video it's linked to two analogue oscillators.

Eurorack Modulation Part 3: AJH Synth Sample Hold & Slew

You can find additional AJH Synth posts by DreamsOfWires here.

"Third part of an introduction to the modulation section of my AJH Synth Eurorack modular synth, which began with the Dual LFO + VCA, then the CV Mix/Offset, and now the Sample Hold & Slew module. This is an analogue Sample & Hold module on steroids, and really surprised me by how much it can do. Videos covering the Gemini Dual VCF and the Next Phase phaser module coming soon.

Thank you to all of you who bought my latest release on bandcamp since I released it last weekend, and for those who purchased any of my other albums - it helps me to fund what I do.
