EDP Wasp synthesizer & EDP Spider sequencer

via this auction

"WASP
Plus Points
When the 9 volt DC mains adaptor is connected and an audio lead is connected to the Line Out and the Wasp is turned on, it emits a continuous note. This frequency/sound of the note can be affected by certain controls such as:
KEYBOARD section 'Bend' and 'Glide' affect the frequency/sound of the note including adjusting white tuning screw
OSCILLATOR 1 section all 'F.T.' settings, 'Width%' and Wave Form control affect the frequency/sound of the note
OSCILLATOR 2 section all 'F.T.' settings, 'Pitch' and Wave Form control affect the frequency/sound of the note
CONTROL OSC. section 'Freq', 'Pitch Mod', 'Noise Signal' and wave form control affect the frequency/sound of the note
FILTER section 'Freq', 'Q', Band Control and both 'Control' knobs affect the frequency/sound of the note
OUTPUT 'Volume' and 'Power On' does work

Minus Ponts
However, the 'ENVELOPE GENERATORS' Sections do not affect the frequency/sound of the note. If I touch any note on the keyboard it does not respond. I have tried adjusting the white keyboard touch sensitivity screw (just above keyboard) and this has no effect. Does not make any sound from internal speaker, just a hum.

Please Note: The second photo shows 4 controls have been replaced.
Typically 4 of the yellow tops went missing and I replaced these with new knob/tops from Clocktronics. The original 4 Wasp knobs with no yellow tops are part of the sale .

SPIDER
Plus Points
In the past this used to work when connected to the Wasp and using a Boss DR55 I could stop/start a sequence by connecting to the 'Sync In'.
Minus Points
Now - Even after connecting the LinkCable I do not know if the Spider works because of the problem with the Wasp - see above."

EDP Wasp Knobs

via this auction

"This listing is for ONE control knob taken from an Electronic Dream Plant (EDP) Wasp synthesizer. These are original parts but are used.

One problem with the Wasp synth was the tendency for the yellow caps on the knobs to fall off and then become lost. Most Wasps I have seen have one or more missing caps on the control knobs. One thing to note is that the D-shafts of the pots are not all lined up the same on the Wasp, so you may need to remove the cap from these knobs and relocate it so that it points the right way. On some of these knobs it looks like a previous owner (pre-1986!) might have glued the caps down, so you will have to do this with some care.

These control knobs don't come up for sale very often, and it seems to be impossible to get exact copies."

Elby Designs Pixie EDP Wasp clone synth + VCS3 filter

via this auction

"It is an exact clone of the EDP Wasp synth, but more stable and with Midi interface so that it can be played from any midi keyboard...

Elby designs added a third VCF to the design as well as the two Wasp filters, however it is a known design fault with this pcb that this transistor ladder filter does not work as there is insufficient voltage over the ladder, so I have disconected this filter completely and replaced it with a Yusynth Diode Ladder filter which is an exact replica of the EMS VCS3 / Synthi A VCF - this gives a much different, more raw sound than the two Wasp Filters and a very worthwhile addition. I did try adding a differnt Moog style transistor ladder VCF but the VCS3 filter suited the Pixie much better IMHO. I have added a CGS dual rail power supply which provides the necessary +12v and -9v supply needed for the filter as well as a 5v supply for the Pixie synth.

This is a quite complex build and a certain level of expertise will be needed to fit this to an enclosure..."

Analog Craftsman 5U Dual Wasp State Variable Analog Filter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a brand new dual Wasp state variable analog filter hand built in the USA by analog craftsman. The panel is based on the original design of the EDP Wasp keyboard synthesizer (the picture of the original wasp in this posting is just for reference and is NOT included in this auction). This module uses NOS Harris 3080 OTAs. The main output is switchable between LP, BP, and HP. There is also a separate output for the notch filter (as the original Wasp didn't have this). Also features CV input attenuator and a variable distortion circuit on each filter. The output of the A side is normalled to the input of the B side so you can use the two filters in series without additional patching for some VERY drastic timbres. If you know the Wasp filter, you know it can scream.

Again, this is factory new, fully tested and ready to ship. Also remember it is TWO discrete filters in one module, which is reflected in the price. There is no commercially available 5U build of this so here is your chance to own a custom build of one of the most unique and historic analog filters."

Update: Tip: use the search box on the top right of the site and search for any synth with "auction", then click on the "sort by date" link. You can then click through auction links in previous posts to see what they went for. For example, here's a search on EDP Wasp sorted by date.

"Welp, doesnt get much more rare than this little guy. Cute as button too! well for synth! Its black and yellow and its has touch sensitive keys- what more do you want! Some seriously Dark side of the moon sounding stuff with little guy! Its instant Moog, Arp, Roland all rolled into one. Its really that awesome. Check out some videos on you tube for ref. Some of the hard plastic is broken off long ago. Its just plastic after all these weren't really thought of as made to last decades or anything. Legend has it Pink Floyd, The Who used to give these away as XMAS gifts.

✯RARE✯ EDP Caterpillar for EDP Wasp Gnat Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"An extremely rare 'Caterpillar' controller designed by Chris Huggett. The caterpillar has four ports on the back for controlling up to four EDP synthesizers via 7 pin DIN sockets. One link cable is also included (not pictured in this sale).

As you can see this has aged really well, and has been recently serviced by SRS prior to sale.

The two controls on the front panel are for:

1. selecting how many devices you want to control (1-4 or Voice setting).

2. Selecting Unison, Poly or Cycle, there is also a separate Hold setting that gives you the option of also selecting Unison, Poly or Cycle.
The unit powers off of a single 9V battery.

Note: There is a design flaw with the Wasp circuitry that does not allow the lowest C note (first key from the left) to trigger the Wasp. However by the time EDP designed the Gnat they fixed this problem and the lowest C note will trigger a Gnat, this has been tested as I also own a Gnat and Gnat Special. The unit has been tested working fully prior to listing."

Integrated Circuits for EDP Wasp Synth - Complete Set

via this auction
"You're looking at a complete, new set of integrated circuits which will enable the life of your EDP Wasp to be sustained well into the future. This comprises 47 parts in all, including all of the digital and analog devices, power regulator, and amp IC. Some of these ICs, in particular the CA3080's, 4006 and 40174 are now obsolete and becoming increasingly difficult to source within the UK. Alternatively you could just add a few resistors, capacitors, pots, and make your own Wasp from scratch."

EDP WASP Electronic Dream Plant Synthesizer

via this auction
"TECH BITS and GOOD BITS:- This is a Digital/Analogue, monophonic synth with 1 printed circuit board housing among many other things 2 x DCO oscillators with variable waveforms from ramp to pulse and a lovely square for drum n bass subby sounds! It has an awesome FILTER section which is an analogue, Voltage Controlled Filter. It is very powerful (listen to my track) and usefully has Lowpass, Hipass and Bandpass options, all with Q. There are controls for white noise, an envelope generator with attack, decay and sustain/repeat, a control envelope etc. Please do some research to understand the full extent of its functionality. In describing its sound, some people have described it as being even more impressive than a MiniMoog, however all I can say is that it sounds fantastic, producing huge, thick, warm, aggressive, powerful electronic noises and sounds when put through an amp, a bit of delay and reverb (on my track I have put the WASP through some reverb to create a nice room sound - as you can hear, the WASP records beautifully from its line out.

THE TECHNICAL ISSUES/BAD BITS:- The major issue is that my WASP suffers from 'DRONING WASP' syndrome, which means that on power up, the sound of the WASP is generated gradually (in terms of volume) without the use of the keyboard. The keyboard does not work. It never has during my ownership. I believe this may be down to a past humidity issue, though it could be anything and I am no expert. So, I have always used it to create continuous or 'oscillating' sounds. Therefore I can't say whether the Envelope Generator section works, or the glide, which would define the note onset, decay and sustain characteristics of a timbre..."

EDP WASP SN 002989

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Rare, Collectable and Awesome Synth.
Unique sounding, Tuff, Bubbly, Buzzy, Fun and Swarmy.
Can be extremely powerful, dark & heavy.
It really does come up with very different sounds to all other synths ive owned & heard.
I am (obviously) quite enthused by the WASP.

Great thing is it sounds fantastic all the time! Very wide sweet spots on this, cant go wrong.
WASP is up there with my 3 faves, AKS, ARP2600 & WASP.
I am only selling as i have two (because i like it so much) this is the last of my inner collection which im willing to part with.

Note:
Wasp was working perfectly approx 2 years ago, i have recently taken out of storage and after testing have noticed the keyboard does not respond to touch. It does however trigger note and gate via link port (i use kenton with WASP expansion).

I will play with keyboard sensitivity adjustment and update if it starts working but at this stage is sold as keyboard not working to touch."

1978 UK SYNTH ✯ MIDI - EDP WASP SYNTH w/ Docs

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Legendary EDP Wasp by Chris Huggett, quirky looking toylike synth but a serious piece of kit, capable of rip roaring synth lines, fat bass...just straight up dirty with so much character. Great for all types of Electronic music.

This has recently been serviced by a top UK tech and has also had the “MidiWasp” retrofit added for midi in and thru functions; great for studio use!

The casing is in very good condition with two small cracks on both sides of the front corners. Small scuffs and very minor wear and tear for a Synth almost 40 years old. The Wasp has been tested and in good working order prior to listing.

Comes with the original manuals which have been laminated to help preserve and a good quality non-original good quality power adapter."

EDP Wasp Synthesizer with Midi

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This particular EDP Wasp was recently inspected and serviced, and is in perfect working condition. An Elby Designs midi kit was added in place of the EDP-specific pre-midi jacks so the synthesizer can be sequenced or used with other midi gear. This is a non-destructive modification and can be reversed (original EDP connector port included with auction)..."

EDP Gnat

images via this auction

"Gnats are usually nothing but an annoyance, but in this case, we'll make an exception. The Gnat is a single-oscillator version of the Wasp. It has one digital oscillator and analog circuitry with a basic lowpass resonant filter, envelope with Attack and Decay controls, an LFO which can modulate the pitch or filter, and a built-in speaker. Like the Wasp, it has a very un-playable touch-sensitive flat keyboard with 25 keys. The Gnat also had EDP's propietary control that could be used to link the Gnat to a Wasp or other EDP gear. Like the Wasp, the Gnat also came in three versions. Besides the original, a Gnat Special (pictured above, released 1982) and Gnat Deluxe were released. They had wood panels and a few other changes and the Deluxe used a a standard 3 octave keyboard. The Gnat offers simple and traditional synthesis of analog bass, synth and other useful monophonic sounds. It's designer was Chris Hugget. Specifications: Polyphony - Monophonic Oscillators - 1 DCO (adjustable from 2' to 32'), switchable between ramp, square, enhance, and noise LFO - one LFO with sine, ramp, sawtooth, square, and random waveforms Filter - one low-pass 12dB/oct filter with resonance Arpeg/Seq - None Keyboard - 25 capacitive non-moving touch keys (or 37 standard keys on Deluxe model) Memory - None Control - EDP proprietary digital socket INPUT. MIDI retrofits and some MIDI-CV converters are able to provide control. Date Produced - 1980 - 1983"
