Modular Synth Workshop With Live Performances by Zachary Paul & Dillon Bastan

Published on Jul 31, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"We will be going over the basics of modular synthesizers, both using them and putting them together. We will also have live performances from Zachary Paul and Dillon Bastan on eurorack systems, you might have seen their performances in our recent Mojave Desert Modular Experiment videos." Eurorack Modular Synthesizer As An Effects Processor Basic Tutorial

Published on Jul 30, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"If you watched our recent Mojave Desert Modular Experiment videos with Zachary Paul or Patrick Shiroishi and are curious how these modular effects systems work this video explains some of the basics.

This video explains why you might want to use a eurorack system as an effects unit for an instrument, what you will need and the basics of patching the system together."

The Mojave Desert Modular Experiment: Dillon Bastan

Published on Jul 22, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"In the Mojave Desert Modular Experiment, we worked with local artists to create modular systems suited to their own styles and workflows...despite the fact that none of them had ever used modular synths before. Each artist/group had two weeks to get to know their system and prepare a performance.

Dillon Bastan normally works with Max and Ableton Live, so although he hadn't used eurorack synthesizers he was familiar with modular signal routing from the Max software environment. Dillons system was based around a Mutable Instruments Marbles for sequencing drums from an Intellijel Plonk and synth sounds from Instruo's CS-L complex oscillator.

Come by our showroom to try out these systems for yourself, and keep an eye out for more results from the experiment each Monday this month! Read more about Dillon's system and get links to his music here: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal..."

The Mojave Desert Modular Experiment: Patrick Shiroishi

Experimental saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi is no stranger to peculiar sounds: his own free improvisations feature unbridled woodwind tones, often augmented with the use of effects pedals. Patrick's modular system, centered around a Make Noise Morphagene, was built to sample and mangle sax signals while acting as a semi-autonomous improvisational partner, co-creating webs of wild noise in response to his playing.

The Mojave Desert Modular Experiment: Dustin & Takako

"In the Mojave Desert Modular Experiment, we worked with local artists to create modular systems suited to their own styles and workflows...despite the fact that none of them had ever used modular synths before. Each artist/group had two weeks to get to know their system and prepare a performance.

The second participants in the experiment were Dustin & Takako (Dustin Wong & Takako Minekawa). These two have years of experience improvising together and often combine musical instruments like guitar and keyboards with more experimental sounds from effects and looper pedals used with found objects and other odd sound generators. We built a eurorack system with each of them, both featuring playable touch interfaces, while Dustin's system focused on FM synthesis, and Takako's on physical modeling.

The Mojave Desert Modular Experiment: Zachary Paul

Zachary Paul was the first participant: an LA-based violinist whose work is based around evolving textures of looped and processed string sounds. He typically uses effects pedals, but put the modular synth to excellent work as an advanced effects processor.
