Plant Music #4 – (MIDI Sprout + Metasonix)

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this experiment, the MIDI Sprout is a 'one-plant band', playing the drums and synthesizer. The MIDI signal coming from the Sprout are being sent to both the Metasonix D-1000 drum machine and the S-1000 Wretch Machine. With some MIDI tools in Ableton, I’m restricting the signal to 4 notes to play the D-1000. The Polygamist is also shown being manipulated but it is only sending control voltages to the S-1000, it is not heard in this video. Reverb is coming from the Metasonix R-56 Spring Reverb module just outta sight about the D-1000. I don’t start touching the succulent, a Crassula falcatta, until about 1:20."

modular carousel

Published on Oct 3, 2014 diafragma365

"An unprocessed recording of a rather simple but musical patch on my eurorack.

It started as a test of the Scale Select Mode of the Intellijel μScale II, with the Make Noise Pressure Points & Brains used to step through a simple sequence of eight chords.

A Make Noise Maths in combination with a Doepfer S&H were used as a random arpeggiator for the organ-like sound from the Synthesis Technology Morphing Terrarium, going through the E440 VCF to the Make Noise Echophon and Erbe-Verb in order to create some room around the sound.

The rhythm for the “organ” arpeggios is somehow randomized by applying a randomized Ginkosynthese TTLFO multiplication function to a tempo from the ALM Pamela’s Workout, the basic tempo engine for this patch.

While the bass kick sound is a straight 4/4, the hi hat is triggered by a patch on the 4MS QCD, partially controlled per measure by the Make Noise Pressure Points and Brains.

This patch was a nice experiment for me to introduce some randomness in a limited musical framework of eight chords and the sound reminds me of the organ going mad with its short notes on the carousel on the fair where I used to go as a child."

POLY LOVES PHASHI 3

Published on May 23, 2015 Smokey Quartz

"So you take two Knas Ekdahl Polygamist oscillators (7 if you include the audio rate LFOs, ADSR, and self-oscillating filter, 10 if you include the sub-pitches of VCO2) detune them and add a Tocante Phashi… then what????"

Smokey Quartz - Pneumata #1

Published on Oct 23, 2015 Smokey Quartz

"The first in a new series of synth improvisations using whatever tickles my fancy at the moment. At this moment it's the Ekdahl Polygamist playing the Metasonix Wretch Machine resulting in a thick, dirty, analog drone."

These do not show up often, especially not with a listing description as colorful as the synth:

"One out of 53 totally made. The synth is in MINT CONDITION WITH ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH IT.
The synth is so cool and weird. Weird in coolie weird way. Very unusual character and amazing thought has gone into its sounds and architecture.
Just go to there website to discover and fall in love with the plethora of wives you will be inheriting if you purchase it.

POLY LOVES PHASHI 4

Published on May 24, 2015 Smokey Quartz

"In this video the Ekdahl Polygamist makes love to the Tocante Phashi. Or is it the other way around? Either way, it is consensual but not very "sensual" in the ordinary sense. Stick around as towards the end I start making out with Phashi to make Poly jealous… don't worry, I don't lick it.. hot breaths only!"

Smokey Quartz - Wretch Jam #11

"The Metasonix S-1000 howls and growls during this Halloween noise improvisation. Reverb provided by the Metasonix vacuum tube spring reverb module, R-56. The Knas Ekdahl Polygamist is possessing the Wretch, controlling it with pulse and gate signals."

POLY LOVES PHASHI 1

Published on May 18, 2015 Smokey Quartz

"In this video, the Tocante Phashi is plugged into the Ekdahl Polygamist and I record their first encounter. Awkward meeting or love at first sight? Also, the infamous Girl Party ladies take a face painted bath. We had too much fun making this video, if such a thing even exists."

Plant Music #2 (Knas + MIDI Sprout)

Published on Jan 25, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this second attempt at plant 'music' I connect the MIDI Sprout to a Bromeliad Guzmania and let it have a turn on the Knas Ekdahl Polygamist synthesizer. The MIDI signal is ran through Ableton Live’s scale and arpeggio MIDI effects for my attempt at making slightly more “musical” plant noise. Sounds like I got some more work to do with that."

Mungo State Zero Synthesizer: Drone

rts213

"A short clip demonstrating the polyphonic Mungo State Zero. In this first example, only 5 oscillators were used."

Check out additional Mungo State Zero Synthesizer demos in previous posts here. It was initially priced at $12,000, then $8900. I always thought this, and an Ekdahl Polygamist would make for an interesting combo. Throw in a Jomox Sunsyn for good measure. Maybe a Synton Syrinx, and OSCar [what's this?] to boot. Funny how certain synths remind you of others that remind you yet of others... Down the synth rabbit hole. This site is the ultimate synth rabbit hole. Whatever happened to that new Syrinx?

Ekdahl Polygamist Modular Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"One of the weirdest and most unrelenting synthesizers ever made. Only around 50 or so units exist! Armed with a ribbon controller strip at the bottom - the warm analog goodness is further amplified by the input of human touch. This vicious beast is capable of churning out a vast palate of sound - from bleeps and bloops to dreamy soundscapes, from torid screeches & squawks to percussive metallic clangs, noisy walls of sound to the echoing depths of space. Your programming ability is your greatest weapon. Expect to fiddle around with the various parameters at your disposal to achieve sudden moments of clarity, only to find your temporary destination is muddled by the curiosity to keep on pressing further into uncharted territory. Have either photographic equipment/a sampler/ a pencil & paper ready because you’ll be stumbling onto new sonic discoveries with every knob turn. I will include 5 one-foot patch cables to start you off on your journey. A power adapter will be provided as well."
