Plants play Modular 🪴 w/ SYMBIOTIC

video upload by Andrea Marzilli

"I’m very happy to introduce you SYMBIOTIC :)

Made by the awesome guys and girls from @spad_electronics , this is a little but powerful utility that converts plants biodata in midi or cv signal! (It also functions as a midi to cv converter). It has a sensitivity knob that you can use to choose the amount of received signal and a setting button allows you to change some interesting stuff (threshold, MIDI channel, note scale and LED brightness). In this way, you just need some cables to easily jam with your plants by just connecting SYMBIOTIC to them!

So in this simple but effective patch, my gorgeous monstera is sending a mutating trigger through SYMBIOTIC to the @qubitelectronix Bloom, who is then sending its 'always-changing' sequence to the @mutableinstruments Plaits V/oct input.
Some lfos from Stages are modulating Data Bender.
Monsoon in Clouds mode is creating the right ambient for this biometric interaction. ✨🌱

Headphones as always. 🎧"

SYMBIOTIC is available on on eBay, Tindie, and Etsy.

Smokey Quartz - Plant Music 18

Smokey Quartz

"In this plant music video I find a nice chard plant to record some spacey jams. The biofeedback from the chard is picked up by the MIDI Sprout and converted into MIDI notes. The MIDI is then sent through some Ableton and Max4Live MIDI effects before being played by a piano, Buchla Music Easel and a Jupiter 8, all from Arturia. Stick around to the end when things get violent."

MIDI Sprout PlantWave Prototypes Are Here

Published on Oct 22, 2019 MIDI Sprout

"When using the new device, you'll notice it doesn't require a wired connection to your phone or computer, unlike MIDI Sprout. This makes using PlantWave so much easier and significantly reduces cable clutter.

Third, you'll notice it has a USB port (this prototype has micro USB, but the final version will have USB-C). The USB port can be used to charge the device's built-in battery and/or stream data to a computer or phone via a wired connection, if desired.

So, I know what you're thinking... Does this prototype work? Well, have a look for yourself!

So, where do we go from here? Well, we still have some tweaking to do. We may play with configuration / placement of the ports, LEDs and display. And, we may have some final adjustments to de-couple the power circuit from the sensor circuit to ensure no interference when PlantWave is connected via USB. We also have some firmware updates to make that will allow for changes in scale and key to be made on the device, itself, in addition to happening via the app.

So, we're doing this! It's happening, but we still need to meet our $80k goal to actually do it. You know, like, deliver these magic boxes to mailboxes around the world.

So, if you haven't supported yet, pre-order PlantWave today to ensure we reach our goal! And if you have supported, let everyone know! Tell your friends about this campaign and let's bring PlantWave to life, together!"

MIDI Sprout for iOS Released

Note this app requires MIDI Sprout hardware.

via iTunes: MIDI Sprout - Data Garden

"Use this app with your MIDI Sprout to listen to your plants!

Plug your MIDI Sprout into the Lightning port using an iConnectMIDI1 cable. Turn on your MIDI Sprout and listen to your plants play harmonious sounds designed by our team of artists. Experience the way patterns and melodies change in relationship to fluctuations in your environment."

And the press release:

"Data Garden announces release of MIDI Sprout for iOS, a device that lets plants play music through an iPhone.

In 2014 Data Garden Kickstarted MIDI Sprout, a device to connect plants to synthesizers, allowing them to produce generative music in real time. After years of presenting this work in installations and refining the technology itself they are announcing its integration into the iOS platform. “We are very excited to release this new app into the world,” says Joe Patitucci, Founder and Co-Director of Data Garden. “The original MIDI Sprout helped our fans recreate the experience of our live installations at home, but there was a learning curve as a MIDI Sprout only worked alongside synthesizers or computer programs that required sound design experience. That all changes now. Our team was able to produce an app with built-in instruments designed especially for plants to play. With our new app, listening to plants is as easy as plugging MIDI Sprout into your iPhone.”

MIDI Sprout for iOS consists of the original MIDI Sprout with a MIDI to Lightning cable that allows users to plug the device into their iPhone. The package also comes with two sensors that stick onto the plant and are connected to the MIDI Sprout device. The sensors detect very small electrical fluctuations that occur over the surface of the plant’s leaves. The MIDI Sprout converts these signals into MIDI information that is sent to the phone where it is processed into sound, thereby allowing the plant’s biorhythms to control digital instruments in real time.

'This is just the beginning,” muses Jon Shapiro, Co-Director of Data Garden. “Not only will this easy-to-use version allow us to bring plant music to more people, but it serves as a platform for us to start building really interesting networking features. It’s a platform for other forms of biodata sonification as well. We’re looking forward to working with our community to develop features so that listening to their plants can be as magical at home as it is in their imagination' Shapiro added."

Instruo - Scion // Modular Meets Leeds 2017

Published on Sep 7, 2017 DivKidVideo

"Here's the awesome new Scion module from Instruo. It's interfaces through a tens cable with a plant (as based on the MIDI Sprout device) and interfaces with the module. It's looking for changes in resistance and interfering with plant affects the signals but you can also play it from the touch capacitive plate on the panel or with a standard 3.5mm cable (plug in your output for a generative feedback based patch). The module creates notes (quantised, each with variable slew) across four voices based on the incoming signals and it also has a harmonic series mode to work with harmonic intervals as opposed to quantised musical intonation. It's a stunning bit of kit that was incredibly musical and interactive."

Plant Music #6 – (MIDI Sprout + Piano + Organ)

Published on Feb 13, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this plant music experiment I try to see if the plants song changes from night to day. Using the MIDI Sprout, a Colocasia plant plays the piano and Arturia B-3 organ at midnight and then again the next morning. Can you hear a difference? I can but it’s subtle."

Update: one more just added:

Plant Music #7 – (MIDI Sprout + mallets + organ)

Plant Music #5 – (MIDI Sprout + Aloe + Human)

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this experiment I leave the studio to collaborate with an Aloe plant rooted in the Earth. With one sensor hooked up to the Aloe and one connected to myself, our MIDI signal plays two B-3 organ simulations via the MIDI Sprout."

All parts here.

Plant Music #4 – (MIDI Sprout + Metasonix)

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this experiment, the MIDI Sprout is a 'one-plant band', playing the drums and synthesizer. The MIDI signal coming from the Sprout are being sent to both the Metasonix D-1000 drum machine and the S-1000 Wretch Machine. With some MIDI tools in Ableton, I’m restricting the signal to 4 notes to play the D-1000. The Polygamist is also shown being manipulated but it is only sending control voltages to the S-1000, it is not heard in this video. Reverb is coming from the Metasonix R-56 Spring Reverb module just outta sight about the D-1000. I don’t start touching the succulent, a Crassula falcatta, until about 1:20."

All parts here.

Plant Music #3 (MIDI Sprout + Knas + Metasonix + Arturia)

Published on Jan 26, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this video I connect the MIDI Sprout to a Philodendron ‘Congo Rojo’ and let it play the Ekdahl Knas Polygamist synthesizer and Arturia’s B-3 V Virtual Hammond Organ. Interjecting it’s noisey self into the mix is the Metasonix S-1000 Wretch machine, which is being “played” by the Polygamist via it’s pulse wave and gate outs. So, a plant is playing a synthesizer that is playing a synthesizer!? Ableton Live’s MIDI effects are also massaging the MIDI data coming from the MIDI Spout. It's really all just a bunch of fun noise."

All parts here.

Plant Music #2 (Knas + MIDI Sprout)

Published on Jan 25, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this second attempt at plant 'music' I connect the MIDI Sprout to a Bromeliad Guzmania and let it have a turn on the Knas Ekdahl Polygamist synthesizer. The MIDI signal is ran through Ableton Live’s scale and arpeggio MIDI effects for my attempt at making slightly more “musical” plant noise. Sounds like I got some more work to do with that."

Part 1 here.
