@PlantWave Meets the “Plantasia” Moog Modular | Live Jam
video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music and PlantWave
"Join me for a one-of-a-kind musical experience filmed inside the iconic Mickey Hargitay Plants in Hollywood. In this special session, I’m improvising on the legendary 1969 Moog IIIc “Plantasia” Modular Synthesizer—the same model used on Mort Garson’s Mother Earth's Plantasia—along with my Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave, while the plants themselves generate melodies through PlantWave.
How PlantWave Works
PlantWave is a bio-music device that connects to a plant’s leaves and measures subtle changes in electrical conductivity. Those fluctuations are translated into MIDI data, which then becomes musical notes, rhythms, and patterns. It’s not “the plant playing an instrument” in the human sense—it's more like the plant’s natural signals being converted into music we can hear and respond to.
The Jam
As PlantWave transforms real-time electrical signals from the plants into beautiful, evolving musical patterns, I’m tuning in, responding, and improvising on the Moog IIIc and 3rd Wave—matching their phrases with my own melodies and rhythms. Every moment emerges organically, completely unique, and impossible to recreate the same way twice.
About the Location
Mickey Hargitay Plants has been an LA landmark for decades, and creating this performance surrounded by their lush greenery made the experience even more magical.
This is a rare combination of vintage analog synthesis, modern wavetable power, plant-generated musical data, and real-time human improvisation. I hope you enjoy this unique collaboration between nature and machines."

#jamuary2024 03 Plantwave & JD-08 in F# PentMin
video upload by SynthAddict
"From last night, fell asleep before uploading...
-Plantwave with iOS app (Bluetooth), preset set for F# PentMin
-Roland Boutique JD-08
-Irijule Theoryboard set for F# PentMin
-Korg MiniKP
-Edirol M-10MX
Plantwave connected to a sprig of St. John's Wort in medium light. I tried to modulate the plant response with red and white lights (to stimulate photosynthesis further) - not much reaction this time.
See my older video on Plantwave where I demo white, red, and UV pocket lights to change the plant response and the synth modulation follows - sort of like a biological D-beam control. :-) [posted here]
I think the Plantwave app preset wasn't set to modulate the sounds the same way my Roland MC-101 was in the older video. Next time I will do a demo of Plantwave connected via MIDI to a hardware synth."

Desert Songs - Biodata to MIDI
video upload by Love Hultén
"Desert Songs uses Plantwave - a small device that translates biodata from organic material into MIDI. It's not magic and the plants are not composing, it's simply biofeedback creating true organic 'randomness'. Tiny changes in electrical current - the plants act as variable resistors. Cacti was used for this project due to their very sparse and sporadic activity. The cacti garden includes a few different specimens hooked up to probes, and outputs for individual plants can be changed as you go using patch points upfront. The MIDI signals are sent to a Korg NTS-1 for simple waveshaping and then drenched in atmosphere using the Microcosm from Hologram Electronics. To complete the biolab environment look, a custom MIDI visualizer was made mimicking chloroplasts under microscope."

Smokey Quartz - Plant Music 22 (Aloe + PlantWave, Polygamist & Wretch)
video by Smokey Quartz
"In this Plant Music video I connect the Plant Wave to a lil Aloe we have growing in a pot outside. The MIDI coming from the PlantWave plays the Knas Ekdahl Polygamist which then sends pulse waves and trigger signals to the Metasonix S-1000 aka Wretch Machine."

Data Garden PlantWave - galvanic MIDI hardware 1st demo/experiments
video by SynthAddict
Little plant playing music.
"PlantWave converts measured plant (or any other organism's) galvanic resistance over time between 2 points to MIDI, like biofeedback devices (galvanic skin response in animals). Enjoy the experiments. A few synths were used in the demo.
I experiment with lights and wavelengths, as well as a simple impromptu chaotic jams at the end with a plant bandmate. :-)
The PlantWave mobile app has onboard synth presets & other features, but this demo is only for MIDI hardware.
Galvanic refers to Luigi Galvani, who was an 18th century physician, physicist, biologist and philosopher - considered the pioneer of bioelectromagnetics.

MIDI Sprout PlantWave Prototypes Are Here
Published on Oct 22, 2019 MIDI Sprout
"When using the new device, you'll notice it doesn't require a wired connection to your phone or computer, unlike MIDI Sprout. This makes using PlantWave so much easier and significantly reduces cable clutter.
Third, you'll notice it has a USB port (this prototype has micro USB, but the final version will have USB-C). The USB port can be used to charge the device's built-in battery and/or stream data to a computer or phone via a wired connection, if desired.
So, I know what you're thinking... Does this prototype work? Well, have a look for yourself!
So, where do we go from here? Well, we still have some tweaking to do. We may play with configuration / placement of the ports, LEDs and display. And, we may have some final adjustments to de-couple the power circuit from the sensor circuit to ensure no interference when PlantWave is connected via USB. We also have some firmware updates to make that will allow for changes in scale and key to be made on the device, itself, in addition to happening via the app.
So, we're doing this! It's happening, but we still need to meet our $80k goal to actually do it. You know, like, deliver these magic boxes to mailboxes around the world.
So, if you haven't supported yet, pre-order PlantWave today to ensure we reach our goal! And if you have supported, let everyone know! Tell your friends about this campaign and let's bring PlantWave to life, together!"

Data Garden Announces Release of PlantWave: A Device That Lets Plants Sing
From the creators of MIDI Sprout.
"Data Garden is launching PlantWave, a consumer device that allows plants to play music in real time from phones, tablets, and computers. Having establishing itself as a leader at the intersection of plants, music, and technology, Data Garden’s new hardware allows people to pair their plants to mobile devices via Bluetooth and listen to them produce music in real time. “We’re really excited to offer this new product. We’ve received so much feedback from our users about what they’d like to see and we’re happy to deliver it all in one package as PlantWave,” says Jon Shapiro, CTO.
The Kickstarter launches on Tuesday September 24th. “We’re so inspired by the talent of our community of users and we’re excited to provide a platform for them to explore and share the potential of this technology through public art,” explains Joe Patitucci, Founder and COO
The goal for the Kickstarter is $100k. Users can pre-order PlantWave for $220 as well as donate to the cause for a plethora of interesting rewards that range from boutique products to in-person experiences in LA.
Since 2011, Data Garden has reached thousands of nature enthusiasts and trendy lifestyle hobbyists. Through their first hardware product, MIDI Sprout, they formed a passionate community centered around listening to plants. PlantWave incorporates user feedback and update requests into a simple, easy to use product that runs on iOS and Android devices. The mechanics of the device are simple. Two sensors monitor the fluctuations of electrical conductivity of a plant’s leaf. PlantWave then translates these fluctuations into digital messages that control instruments in a mobile app.

FOUR TRACKS, 116 MINUTES OF PLANT-GENERATED MUSIC
"We all think we know what nature sounds like. It’s birds chirping, wind through trees, thunder echoing through the valley. These are all sounds that come from physical phenomena in nature, producing waves perceivable by the human ear: the need to mate, currents of air and water, static electricity. There are other phenomena in our natural environment, however, that produce information which we cannot perceive through our biological senses.
The course of human history has been moving towards advanced technology which enhances our ability to observe the world beyond these senses. As stone tools were a way for us to expand our physical strength, electronic tools expand our ability to perceive in real-time.
Digital technology has become a natural extension of our human senses. With it, we are not just gaining the ability to observe new information. We are revealing new patterns of creative expression. These revelations raise questions about our own place in a Universe filled with natural elegance. What is the creative force of the Universe? Is the force that inspires a human to write poetry the same as that which inspires a plant to grow in a particular way?
The musical compositions you are about to listen to are being generated by the electronic impulses produced by four tropical plants. This data, interpreted by humans with the help of computers, has been employed to organize sound into beauty perceivable by the human ear. While the means of producing this beauty can be described in technical terms, the natural creative force generating this experience is less apparent.
We invite you to explore Data Garden: Quartet while examining your own views on the source of its creation.
