Jomox RESONATOR NEURONIUM SN 003

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Not the best pics, but these are rare. This SN was actually for sale in 2008 for more, and in 2005 for even more! Hey, prices are decreasing!

"This is the out of this world Jomox Resonator Neuronium, first batch made from Jurgen at Jomox. If you want to make sounds unlike any other in the world, this is the synth for you!

This is an experimental analog neural network synthesizer that was first released in limited quantities during the early 2000s. According to JoMox, they leave it up to customers to decide whether the Resonator Neuronium is a sound production tool, performance machine, musical instrument, synthesizer, FX unit, or objective piece of art.

It's not often that a synthesizer can boast that it has never heard before sounds, but that was exactly the claim behind the Resonator Neuronium by JoMox. It is an experimental analog neural network synthesizer that was first released in limited quantities during the early 2000s. Since then, JoMox once again began making these units in 2018 after a lot of inquiries. However, they once again only did a small production run and the price obviously went up as well due to the many obsolete or hard-to-get parts required.

According to JoMox, they leave it up to customers to decide whether the Resonator Neuronium is a sound production tool, performance machine, musical instrument, synthesizer, FX unit, or objective piece of art. What can't be argued with, though, is that the Resonator Neuronium features an analog net which has two main analog layers in addition to a digital layer with sequencers.

The Resonator Neuronium is certainly very unique from a visual perspective. It is housed in an iron angled casing that has a striking, blue-coated appearance. The left side of the unit is dominated by a grouping of buttons, knobs, and LEDs that form a hexagon. The black buttons that are located around the hexagon can be used to select direct commands along with the golden potentiometer knobs. A 24-character LCD can be found on the bottom right of the Resonator Neuronium and the Menu/Presets button above it is used to access the preset display. A series of soft buttons below the LCD can also be used to access sub-menus.

With its blue color scheme, unusual hexagon layout, and gold-plated brass buttons the Resonator Neuronium is certainly something that stands out in any collection. It can also produce very unique sounds that some users have likened to animal noises, but this means it is something that might not be so easy to incorporate into your workflow. It's an amazing piece of equipment for anyone who loves creating experimental music, but there are also many users who have struggled to find the sweet spot when using it in their workflows.

Try using this with 6 ribbon strips on the 6 outputs. Not only will you be able to make noise like those from the year 3000 but will add the capacity to have variables in oscillations between the neuronal axis of the parameters. Truly the most fascinating instrument ever made in the history of the planet!"

Resonator Neuronium by Katavist

Resonator Neuronium 1 - Summing Node from Katavist on Vimeo.

"This is the first in a series of Resonator Neuronium-demos attempting to debunk some erroneous assumptions about this machine, such as the one that it only spits out uncontrollable noise and can't be used/played as an instrument. Admittedly there's always some trial and error involved, and the machine definitely has its own will - but isn't that charming?

The only sound source in these videos is the Resonator Neuronium (with additional external effects).

Jomox Resonator Neuronium

via this auction

"The Resonator Neuronium is a unique, one of a kind electronic instrument which is the brain child of the man behind Jomox - Jürgen Michaelis. Six resonating filters work together with complex cross modulations using multiple synthesis topologies simultaneously to create sounds which are simply not available with any other device.
More information, including a PDF of the manual, is available at http://www.jayemsonic.de/2l2-resoneurotext.html

Some music and sound art composed for the Resonator Neuronium can be heard at http://www.jayemsonic.de/2l56-yogitunesold.html

This instruments palette certainly comes close to the famous Buchla 100 at times. It is *very* analogue and *very* big sounding but still completely unique.

Included with this auction:
- Resonator Neuronium
- Original 120v US-style Power Supply
- Padded aluminum case"

This is the first realisation of a device with Resonant Neuron Synthesis, called the "Resonator Neuronium".

The new paradigmas of the 21 century are called complexity, order from chaos, self organisation of complex systems, networking and cooperation. From a certain complexity onwards a system is not even the sum total of its parts but a greater whole which shows totally new attributes than its sub structures.

The Resonator Neuronium has 6 analog resonant neurons. The net parameters can be programmed by the lefthand structure in form of a hexagon by use of knobs, buttons and LEDs.

We have 6 neurons with 6x6 = 36 net connections for one parameter. In order that summation and FM is connected, we have 2x36 = 72 net connections with individual pots for each node.

Net Programming

The rotary knobs are touch-sensitive and allow the net links by a simple touch of the metal coated knobs. The intensities of "wi" or amounts are then displayed and edited by turning the respective knob of the receiving neuron. For better understanding, the routed net connection is displayed as a matrix-LED and displayed in the LCD as Tx (transmitter) -> Rx (receiver) value. If you have a summing net connection, LEDs light up green, with FM connections LEDs light up red.

We have 6 neurons with 6x6 = 36 net connections for one parameter. In order that summation and FM is connected, we have 2x36 = 72 net connections with individual pots for each node.
Net Programming
The rotary knobs are touch-sensitive and allow the net links by a simple touch of the metal (real gold) coated knobs. The intensities of "wi" or amounts are then displayed and edited by turning the respective knob of the receiving neuron. For better understanding, the routed net connection is displayed as a matrix-LED and displayed in the LCD as Tx (transmitter) -> Rx (receiver) value. If you have a summing net connection, LEDs lit green, with FM connections LEDs lit red.
The loops indicate the self-networking connection of a neuron. As described in the article, one can let the neuron become self oscillating by resonance or let it toggle swing with positive feedback dependent of the sign of the loop value.
The menu selection is made by the buttons within the hexagon to let the user not unnessecarily step through awkward menus. The menus are:

Summing Node

summing input node of the neuron

Neuron Frequency

basic frequency of the resonant neuron = cutoff

Frequency Modulation

frequency modulation input of the neuron
Stimulus Recombination

Recombination of wave segments (DNA) of the stimulus with other neuron's DNA by mating of the DNA

Stimulus Edit

Alteration (editing) of wave forms (DNA) of the stimulus of a neuron. Input by knobs at the LCD display.

Neuron Envelope

VCA envelope of each neuron with ADSR. Each neuron is led through an ADSR envelope which time-slices the signal and lets it being played from a midi keyboard.

Display/Menu
On the right side there is a 24 character LCD display placed with 6 soft buttons and 2 knobs. The pots at the display are used for different tasks, e.g. input of DNA waveform of the stimulus of a selected neuron. In the menu selection there are different things to be programmed, like e.g. the midi channel, multi mode (ranking of different channels to different neurons), VCA envelopes of the neurons and more. The rest of the keys is used for selection of the preset memory and the switching between main menu and edit menu.
All analog neurons in- and outputs are lead out through a 25 pin D-SUB connector at the console back. By this you can cascade 2 or more Resonators to a greater network.

In/Outputs
Two audio inputs are available who feed neuron 1 and 4. Thus you can use any kind of external signal to excite the network. So the Resonator becomes a tool for sound processing as well as a sound production instrument.
Each neuron has an own last stage VCA envelope with its own output. It is imagineable to let the outputs drive 6 single speakers in a room to form a sound installation; a sourround 5.1 application could be possible as well.

The 6 neurons with their individual VCA envelope are mixed to a stereo mix with an additional VCA envelope. Those appear at the output jacks L=left and R=right.

Midi

At the back side there is the well-known midi trio to trigger the neuron envelopes and stimuli by an external keyboard or sequencer. Also certain CC controllers can be sent or received for parameter changes and neuron interactions."

Jomox - Jayemsonic Resonator Neuronium

The resonator has been making it's rounds accross blogs lately including Gizmodo of all places. The first 20 units are sold out and have been delivered. The second run is almost complete. Click here for more on Jomox's Jürgen Michaelis Resonator Neuronium. What makes the Neuronium unique is its six analog resonant neurons. Not sure how it works, but looking at the knobs and the description it seems like some sort of FM and mixing accross the six units using the six knobs. Interesting stuff.

Moogulator's Neuronium Site

Title link takes you to Moogulator's Neuronium site with pics, video and general info. He also mentions a possible stripped down version on the way called the m-resonator. Interesting bit is that he comments the m-resonator as being more of an filter/effects box minus midi. If you haven't heard of the Neuronium Resonator, it's an interesting device consisting of what Jayemsonic referes to as six analog resonant neurons that can interact with each other. Rather than do injustice trying to explain it myself, just click this link for the Jayemsonic page on the Resonator. Also look at the star pattern on the Resonator above. Six knobs for six neurons to play off of one another, one ring to rule them all.

JoMoX M-Resonator Stereo Analog Dual Filter Envelope Follower FM Synth Effects SN 0589

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "A unique analog filter effects box from JoMoX, which is no longer in production. Similar to the T-Resonator without the delay effects and has a unique character of it's own as I have owned both.

If you're looking for a more straight ahead filter without the added zaniness that the delay lines add to the T-Resonator, this unit would complement the T and serve as a nice Moog-ish filter module to add some depth, character, and warmth to your sounds (digital synths, drum machines, guitar, etc.). Unit is in very nice shape and works as it should."

Product description:
"The m-resonator is a small filter box based on the resonator neuronium. the m-resonator has a true differential envelope follower and 2 filters that can be fed back in every way plus the filter distorts smoothly.

This little and inexpensive filter box is just incredible, although you won't see what's inside at first.

The envelope follower is level independent and has 2 actual envelopes internally - one fixed and one changeable referential envelope. They both are divided analog which produces a level independent envelope within far ranges.

The filters are made from discreet parts and form a 24 pole lowpass filter transistor cascade.
They can - in any thinkable way - be self feedbacked and be coupled or feedbacked with each other, so that extreme sounds and chaotic states create - all what you need today for creative analog sound design.
Unbelievable bass gains or screaming scratch sounds are no problem.
The mix pots are zeroed in center position; any other angle will couple or feedback negatively or positively. FM in both directions is also available.

Connections: Power 9V~ AC, Stereo In 2x 1/4 inch, Stereo Out 2x 1/4 inch"

"Another video getting to know my Resonator Neuronium. I used a Signal Arts Tetra MAPS to sequence the RN this time. The MAPS is a brilliant sequencer and works very well with the RN, 6 8 step sequence tracks were used, some with different lengths, the sequence wasn't tweaked while recording. All sounds are RN (Apart from Kick drum which was made with my Bugbrand Modular (just an SV filter pinged and CV'd from an envelope) with delayed reverb effect from Eventide Space."

Jomox Resonator Neuronium Video Demo

Published on Feb 3, 2013 d4nnyp·14 videos

"JoMox Resonator Neuronium. I recently got hold of this RN, I'd been after one for a long time. The RN is a lot of fun to play, its also great fun to program and let it run on changing its patterns using "Stimulus Recombination" (The manual reads more like a science lecture!). I could literally listen to it for hours. I'll most likely be doing a few videos with this once I have some more time on it, its such a fantastic and rare piece of gear.
The video is all RN, sequenced by itself. Audio from RN stereo pair with a bit of reverb. I think it just sounds superb, its hard to appreciate listening through youtube (and its recorded into a crappy camera audio input) but standing in front of the speakers it sounds massive."
