Animal TKB SSG Tricks Trills 01

YouTube Published on May 20, 2012 by djangosfire

"Using the SSG (Smooth/Stepped Generator) with the TKB VERT Sequencer to create 4x note sequences that shift between "trilled" notes and solid quarter notes.

Basic patch:

- patch top half of SSG "CYCLE" into "IN" to create an LFO/CLOCK source... set "RATE" knob (tempo) to 10 o'clock or whatever . . .

- patch top half SSG "CYCLE" into SSG "SAMPLE" ... set lower half "VC RATE" knob up to 100%, and the lower half "RATE" knob to 4 o'clock

- patch TKB "ABCD" out to SSG lower half "IN"

- patch SSG "CYCLE" to TKB "VERT CLOCK"

- patch TKB "PRESSURE" to SSG lower half "VC RATE"

- set TKB "KEYBOARD" switch to "up" position

- patch SSG "STEPPED OUT" to a VCO of choice.... then VCO out to mix or through a filter, whatever etc.....

Now, try this: select/press (and hold down) a stage key on the TKB, tune up a 4x note sequence...... now, as you lift your finger off the key - you will hear extra "trilled" notes between the clocked notes. This is due to the SSG sample rate dropping notes..... adjust the lower half "RATE" knob to taste.

At this point, other easy patch variations:

- try patching the TKB "KP" to the SSG "HOLD" for sequence stopping fun.

Also, with the SSG patched as above, you can easily use it as a sort of "sequential switch":

- disconnect the SSG "CYCLE" from the TKB "VERT CLOCK" .... then patch TKB stage 16 trigger out to the "VERT CLOCK" instead

Now the TKB sequencer will run row "A", hit the last stage and switch to "B", then to "C" etc........."

"Serge Dual Neg Slew, Peak & Trough, Voltage Controlled Slew, Tripple Wave shapers, 73 Envelope Generator, 73 Filter, CGS VCA ...and 4 step Programmer.________
_The Two NEG slews are the Oscillators, They are each patched into a Wave Shaper, The Wave Shapers are being VC modulated by the 73 Envelope Gen and the V.C.Slew. One of the sounds is being Gated on the way into the TWS using the CGS VCA rather than after the TWS (Thanks to Doug Lynner for that tip !!). A pulse coming from a step on the Programmer or some where is pinging the 73 Filter into self oscillation to make a low rumble bass drum/ giving this patch its third sound. The bass won't be very noticeable on small speakers. The V.C.Slew is used as an Attack Release Envelope and simultaneously its End Pulse Out is clocking the Programmer. The 73 EG and V.C.Slew make great funky clock dividers with VC control. When using the Pulse In on the V.C.Slew it functions like the 73 EnvelopeGenerator, Meaning it won't start a new envelope until its done with the one its working on so, If you feed it a clock that is fast while the 73 EG has a long Envelope setting... The Envelope starts at funky times making cool rhythms. One might think being adjusted by a pot with no time quantization that it would be random but its not. Its pure funk bubbling out of the electrolytics inside. Kind of hard to not fall into a rad syncopated poly-rythm."

"SERGE POS, SSG, DVG, 73 VCF, 73 EG, CGS VCA , VCA___________
_Each Positive slew is cycling and used as a VCO they are both also gated by a VCA. One half of the Dual Voltage Processor is used to mix the two Gated audio signals before being patched into the 73 Filter. The 4 step Programmer VCs one Positive Slew while the Stepped section of the SSG samples A row of CV from the Programmer and in turn pitches the second half of the Dual Positive Slew. SSG is SAMPLE AND HOLD. the other half of the DualVoltageProcessor mixes CV signals from the EG and SSG, the Output its patched to CV the Filter. The 73 EG is generating an Envelope that controls a Gate, Also the END Pulse out of the 73 EG is clocking the Programmer in one direction. The CYCLE out of the SSG clocks the Programmer in the other direction a couple steps here and there."

via Wikipedia:

"YM2608, a.k.a. OPNA, is a sixteen-channel sound chip developed by Yamaha. It's a member of Yamaha's OPN family of FM synthesis chips, and the successor to the YM2203. It was notably used in NEC's PC-8801/PC-9801 series computers.

The YM2608 comprises four internal modules:

FM Sound Source, a six-channel FM synthesis sound system, based on the YM2203
SSG Sound Source, a complete internal implementation of the Yamaha YM2149/SSG, a variant of the popular AY-3-8910/PSG for producing three channels of square wave synthesis.
ADPCM Sound Source, a single channel for samples in 8-bit ADPCM format at a sampling rate between 2–16 kHz
Rhythm Sound Source, a six-channel ADPCM system, enabling playback of six percussion "rhythm tones" from a built-in ROM
The FM Sound Source module includes six concurrent FM channels (voices, twice as many as the Yamaha YM2203), four operators per channel, with dual interrupt timers and an LFO. It also includes eight possible operator interconnections, or algorithms, for producing different types of instrument sounds.

The SSG, or Software-controlled Sound Generator, is Yamaha's YM2149 programmable sound generator. The YM2608 includes the SSG's 3 sound channels and dual 8-bit GPIO ports.

The YM2608 is used with a YM3016 stereo DAC..."

Dr. Wiener Presents: Serge Modular 101: Using the Smooth and Stepped Generator (SSG)

Dr. Wiener

"This a full explanation of the Serge Modular SSG in the Eurorack Format from Random*Source. Here is a text description below from their site:

SERGE SMOOTH & STEPPED GENERATOR (SSG)
The Serge Smooth & Stepped Generator (SSG) is a complex multi-functional module which can be patch programmed to provide various slew and sample functions both for audio and CV signals. It is one of the essential Serge modules.

The Smooth section will place a positive and negative slew on input voltage transitions for lag effects, voltage controlled portamento and for low frequency filter applications.” In Cycle-mode (cycle jack patched to the input), the Smooth side “will oscillate yielding a voltage controlled triangle wave LFO. A high level into the HOLD input will enable the Smooth Function to be used as a track-and-hold circuit with voltage controlled slew rate.

The Stepped function can be used as a sample-and-hold with voltage controlled slew rate limiting. In Cycle mode, a pulse applied to the Sample input will generate complex staircase waveforms for control voltage applications and for use as audio signals.

The Coupler is an internal comparator which compares the output levels of the Smooth and the Stepped Generators. This output is useful for generating complex control voltages or random voltages.

The Random*Source version of the Smooth & Stepped Generator for Euro is a licensed and authorized adaption of the original Serge design that provides an increased audio range of the Smooth Generator and a bipolar (“hot”) Coupler output in addition to the regular (unipolar) Coupler output."

Natural Gate by Rabid Elephant | It's REALLY good. But why?

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"The NG is often considered as the best sounding LPG you can get - if your fortunate, lucky and patient. It's analog, but it doesn't use a natural vactrol decay because it can ring much longer thanks to the Decay slider. I guess the term 'natural' applies more to the physical properties of hitting something soft, hard, slow or fast, where the materials and pitch also matter. A classic LPG has a static hit, but DXG is advertised as dynamic. To get the most out of our not-so-natural LPG's, it's cool to demystify these physical properties and try to patch them up so we'll understand them better. They can make a lot of difference. So this is not going to be a 'look what I got' video because it doesn't help anybody. There's a big section about advanced envelope patching with Maths and Optomix to add physical properties like pitch dependent decay and strike intensity. But it's not easy, and it doesn't sound as natural as the NG.

When I was hooked on Optomix, I 'protected' myself from non-vactrol LPGs like the NG and the SSF SSG. I often said, if it doesn't have vactrols, it's not an LPG. I've been biased and prejudiced and it happens to all of us from time to time, considering the endless analog vs digital discussion. Technology serves a result, and when the result is excellent, it's great technology. I've been expecting wonders from the NG and in the confined realm of classic LPG's it really delivers. But I am not sure if it can compete with the fun that comes with a module like the SSG. The NG is one of the very best. But the best one is the one that helps you make the music you love most. Honestly, I think the SSG will serve more genres and styles.

The African track is composed and performed by me when I was still in the box and used NI Maschine a lot. It's named after the expansion pack 'Global Shake'."

Serge Tcherepnin Coming Back to Modular with Tiptop Audio

Serge Tcherepnin, the man behind the original Serge Modular Music Systems from the 1970s is back at the drawing board with Tiptop Audio.  This is HUGE news.  Another legend of synthesizer history has returned. Note the newer Serge Modular systems are from Rex Probe's Sound Transform Systems. Serge Tcherepnin will be working with Tiptop Audio on new designs.

Update: they will be working on bringing both the older designs to euro format as well as new designs modified to be used with Tiptop stackable cables in lieu of banana jack.  Note older designs including modifications have been available in multiple formats via other manufacturers including Ken Stone's CGS and Bananalogue.  A VCO and the noise source are in the works.  The noise source is actually the original Serge design (the copyright is for the new schematic), and can be used independently, or can used in conjunction with the SSG to create a random voltage generator. (see the comments below)

Some history on Serge Tcherepnin from Wikipedia:

"Serge Tcherepnin is the son of composer Aleksandr Nikolayevich Tcherepnin and grandson of composer Nikolai Nikolayevich Tcherepnin. His mother was Chinese pianist Lee Hsien Ming. He had his first instruction in harmony with Nadia Boulanger and studied from 1958 to 1963 at Harvard University with Leon Kirchner and Billy Jim Layton. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1960. In 1961 at the Darmstadt Vacation Courses he studied with Luigi Nono. He then studied in Europe with Pierre Boulez, Herbert Eimert, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Between 1966 and 1968 he worked at the studio for electronic music of the Cologne Hochschule für Musik. From 1968 he directed the electronic studio of New York University. Starting in 1970 he taught composition and electronic music at the School of Music-California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. He has been involved with the development of synthesizers such as the Serge Modular and founded the company Serge Modular Music Systems. After selling this company in 1986 he returned to France. He has composed works for tape and electronic instruments, multimedia works, chamber music, a Kaddish for speakers and chamber ensemble (1962, on a text of Allen Ginsberg) as well as pieces for saxophone and for piano."

Update 2 via Tiptop Audio on Muff's: "Ok fellows, I don't have any front panels to show you yet, but i can share some of the progress we've made on this project:

I have been talking to Serge for sometime now about making the Serge system in eurorack. It all started when I introduce him to our Stackcables, he loved it and said that very few people are aware of how shielded patchcords would enhance modules such as the Serge VCFs, VCAs, Ring Mod, which are already ultra low noise. He continued by saying that with shielded patchords, the modules will
attain studio quality performance. I guess that from that point it was obvious, we are going to start a new Serge system in the best format in town, eurocrack.

So this is how it's going to work, all modules will be:

1. Original Serge designs

2. Serge color coded jacks

3. Serge original fonts and graphics, work flow

Or in other words; the whole Serge experience.

Those who have/had a Serge know what i'm talking about.

For starters, we are looking at making the Smooth and Stepped Generator (SSG) with added randomization, the Dual Slope Generator (DUSG) and the Wilson Analog Delay (WAD).

The fact that we are going to design all these from scratch give us the option to add features, but it is totally up to Serge to decide that. It is going to be his system and his ideas.

On the WAD we are working directly with Dave Wilson and hopefully we could figure out how to implement it with available parts.

The whole thing takes a very long time; Serge is a busy man so please be patient. I'm sure it is going to be worth the wait. It's a great joy seeing Serge drawing schematics again, and I will do my best to make it available for all of us to use."
