Nyle Steiner Microcon - NuRAD - NuEVI Demo by Mark Steiner

Mark Steiner

"New video: NuRad, Steiner Microcon resurrected, and modular light painting with sound.

Relentlessly thorough sound demo of the Nyle Steiner Microcon synth (this is the reissue/redesign by the brilliant, David Ingebretsen with consulting from Nyle and using original schematics. David worked as a young man for Steiner-Parker, and built modulars, Synthacons and all the good stuff, so he knows what this stuff is meant to sound like. True to the schematics.

Please forgive that YouTube compression introduces some distortion. It is still worth it as it gets things out there for many people. I'll provide a link here later for some downloadable and/or better quality sound examples as time permits.

For waitlist/info on the wind synths played (NuRAD and NuEVI), email Berglund Instruments at TheNuEVI@gmail.com"

1977 - STEINER MICRON ANALOG Synthesizer 360 Systems Version

via this auction

I don't think I ever realized there was a 360 Systems Steiner Parker relationship.

"1977 - Steiner Micron 360 Systems Analog Synth Expander

This particular one comes from a collection and was last serviced in 2016 by SRS. It has a wired euro plug with minimal wear and tear to the casing.

Description
The Steiner Microcon is a complete synthesizer (less keyboard) in a single module. It has its own power supply, VCO, LFO, VCF and envelope generator, thereby combining all of the most needed parts of a synthesizer in one unit.

It can be used with synthesizer accessories such as sequencers, electronic valve instruments, guitar slave-drivers, pitch followers, or with a keyboard. Multiple units can be combined with a guitar controller to form full polyphonic synthesizers at a fraction of the cost normally expected. Combined with a regular synthesizer, it ads an extra 'voice' to your present system.

Oscillator stability and tracking are the best that state of the art will allow. Numerous inputs and outputs are available on the front and top of the unit. Other signals available inside can be brought out for special applications, and connected to other equipment in a variety of useful ways.

The Minicon truly packs alot of synthesizer into a small space (which looks to be about 4-inches by 6-inches. There are 8 knobs and 6 switches. The VCO has knobs for course and fine tuning and switches allowing selection of "three waveforms". The LFO has knobs for rate and level and a switch for beat and is available for vibrato. The VCF has knobs for frequency and gain, as well as a switch for resonance. The Envelop Generator has knobs for attack and decay, as well as a switches to enable damp (a quick release decay) and sustain. The VCA is described as a "trigger controlled audio gate". Connections include positive and negative trigger out, VC filter in, calibrated and uncalibrated voltage control ins, a signal out (which "can be paralleled"), and a trigger in. According to the product literature the "beat function causes the VCO to sound like to sound like two oscillators beating together."

This is actually the Steiner Microcon which paired with the Steiner EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument), however according to this post "the Microcon works perfectly alone, without the EVI connected. It could be easily included in a complex analog synth setup, adding the unique original Steiner Parker sound from its very compact but versatile box."

I'm not sure what voltage these work with so who knows how well these would track with modern modular gear.  If you know, feel free to comment.

Steiner Parker EVI with Microcon

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Around only 200 were produced between 1975 and 1979, they were each hand made by Nyle Steiner himself. This is not the later and most "common" Crumar Italian version but the original US version. It sounds far more better and has much more sound options. The sound module which comes in this early version is the legendary original Steiner Parker Microcon analog synth.

These particular EVI trumpet and Microcon module have been bought years ago as new old stock from the original Steiner Parker French importer. They have never been used except for testing. They are in close to new condition. They show a few light scratches here and there. Both have just been fully tested. They work absolutely great together, delivering this incredible deep, rich and edgy sound everybody is looking for!

Also, the Microcon works perfectly alone, without the EVI connected. It could be easily included in a complex analog synth setup, adding the unique original Steiner Parker sound from its very compact but versatile box.

The EVI would also work nicely once interfaced with any analog synth, giving a fantastic control of the expression.

The auction includes:

- Steiner Parker Electronic Valve Instrument – More infos here

- Steiner Parker Microcon Synthesizer Expander Module – More infos here

- Original case with key

- Connection cables

- Operation manual showing patches for interfacing the EVI with Steiner Synthacon, Arp 2600, Arp AXXE, Minimoog, Oberheim synths...

Steiner Microcon meets Arturia MINIBRUTE

Published on Sep 21, 2014 Gerald Stevens

"A demo of my DIY Frac-rack Steiner Microcon playing along with the Arturia Minibrute (which plays more prominently towards the end.) Also look for the world's smallest modular analog oscilloscope, the Tek SC 501! Hopefully this covers some of the range of the microcon. You can buy a euro-version from Synthcube, and might still be able to get a circuit board from David over on the Muff Wiggler forum."

Modular synth drone jam with Tune in Tokyo

Published on Sep 3, 2014 ISOTROPOSPHERE

"DIY Fractional rack modular synth drone jam with
Rare Waves - Tune in Tokyo (off camera)

This was several weeks ago during a bout of rainy days which was perfect for drone jams in the studio.

I am pretty sure you can figure out the patch by watching so the modules left to right are: Power supply, Pre-amp, Ring modulator, three channel Mixer, Bi-n-Tic, Microcon.

The Bi-n-Tic filter / oscillator is my own build and conversion to the Frac format from the 5U kit. This sucker is quite different from the eurorack modules. Thanks Bridechamber, Mecanikill, and Profx.

The Steiner Microcon is a diy kit version from Synthcube with a slight machining of the panel to get it to fit side to side and custom knobs. A unique single voice synth in itself, strange to operate and what you can do with it. Is anyone else finding this to be true?

The Rare Waves - Tune in Tokyo is not shown but rather heard quite extensively in this video coming into the pre-amp 1/4 inch jack input. You can see my other video featuring my build of that here on my channel if your curious.

Drone on my friends....."

Fractional Rack Mdlr Jam

Published on Mar 30, 2014 ISOTROPOSPHERE·124 videos

"Finally filled the last empty space in this completely DIY fractional rack modular synthesizer that I built.

She started life from the last few pieces of Purpleheart wood I had of which the frame and side panels are made from this. The perforated steel and aluminum bottom panel I had to painstakingly bend to fit the side cheeks. They got rid of the brake from the shop. :-( The power is from Paia as well as a pre-amp module, a balanced modulator (ring mod) and a mixer, left to right in video. This is followed by my custom MOTM version of the Bi-n-Tic module converted for frac rack use and finally the Synthcube Steiner microcon module for frac. Drums are coming from the Korg ES-1, the Bi-n-Tic is being fed audio from the SynthTech Cloud Generator which it and the Microcon are being sequenced by the C&G Melody Mill. All not in synchronization but it was sounding cool. Enjoy."

"Exquisitely rare little box with one each of VCO, LFO, VCF, and AD envelope. Built-in power supply. The unit is about the size of a small pocket
calculator in width and height, but is about four times deeper. One of the first expanders, maybe inspired by the Oberheim SEM.

Three waveforms; LFO level, rate, beat and vibrato controls; VCF frequency, gain and resonance; EG - attack, decay, sustain, damp;
VCA trigger-controlled audio gate; +/- triggers out; VC Filter in; calibrated and uncalibrated VC in; signal out; trigger in.

This rare expander is in perfect working condition and in excellent physical condition. Very minor scuff marks on the bottom as shown in these actual pictures..."
