Cadmium metal has high toxicity.

Cadmium was used in NiCd batteries for decades until NiMH and Li-Ion batteries replaced them.

Cadmium is still used as a component of control rods in nuclear fission reactors and in CdS photocells for light sensors and modular vactrol circuits.

A cadmium-dependent carbonic anhydrase (enzyme) has been found in marine diatoms in place of the usual zinc version."
