Come Patch With Jamie Lidell / Matthias Puech / MATTHS - Modular Synth Live Patching

video upload by MATTHS

First live patching audio demo starts at 9:11.

"Join myself and guests as we open the doors to our studios and share ideas about #modular synth patching as part of this series of livestreams.

Each episode I will be joined by fellow synth wizards, each armed with their own ideas, tips and tricks on #patching modular #synthesisers. Less chatting and more patching! Get involved by suggesting any further patching ideas in realtime using the chat.

I'm joined in this episode by:

Jamie Lidell. Firmly bitten by the modular bug, Jamie has kindly been on my channel before taking us through is latest iteration of a modular looping device.

Choral // Eurorack ambient Hermod Pluck Telharmonic Behringer D Plonk Plaits

Published on May 12, 2018 Lost For Words

Beautiful piece.

"Frozen moments of Pluck (guitar/string) + plonk (granular fuzz) are captured in uClouds in spectral madness mode and sound almost like a human choir or, at least, an 80s synth version of a choir.

Crunchy chords from Telharmonic are run through the Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water (KFM) pedal for random warble modulation.

A clone of the output of Pluck goes through Tapographic Delay for extra layers.

Behringer D (2 x ramp oscillator) for the bass/lead notes and Plaits on hi-hats.

Maths modulates the decay input on Pluck for that some-notes-picked, some-notes-strum sound.

Sequenced with Hermod and recorded into Reaper with a little reverb from Toraverb2."

4ms Stereo Triggered Sampler (STS) + 2017 Prototypes

Published on Aug 18, 2017 4mspedals

"Made with the Stereo Triggered Sampler from 4ms Company --- AVAILABLE NOW!

PATCH NOTES

STS:
• mono mode
• left side triggered by QCD pattern. Length and start position modulated by slow QCD out and its inverted QCDexp output. (1voct pitch offset by SMR 1voct out)
• right side plays dub-like rhythm. Play is triggered by QCD output. Sample CV is modulated by QCD, to alternate between kick and upbeat stabs. Play length is modulated by PEG red side, which is clocked to QCD.

Spherical Wavetable Navigator:
• 6x oscillators play at various octaves and are brought in via its mixer section.
• Wavetable depth, longitude and latitude are modulated by 3x of the 6x LFO outs.
• Chord progression achieved by using transpose knob.
• SWN mixed into both STS channels via VCAM.

All channels mixed to mono and sent to Tapographic Delay (TD) via VCA Matrix (left side of STS dominates the mix). TD is clocked to red side of the PEG (which is tied to the main clock coming from QCD). TD is set to pitched delays and its stereo outputs are sent to LISTEN FOUR output mixer in channels 3 and 4."

Everything Ends Here (Alessandro Cortini) // Eurorack, Rings, Mangrove, Bermuda, Plaits, Hermod

Published on Apr 9, 2018 Lost For Words

"I love the video of Alessandro Cortini, who wrote this track, and Don Buchla (modular father) playing this live. See link below. A simple 3 part melody loop with great feeling. I hope I did it a little justice.

In my take on the piece, played on a Keystep and recorded and sequenced by Hermod, Rings goes to ZVEX Instant LoFi Junky. Mangrove and Bermuda play the other two pieces. I use the Erica Polivoks filter and the Ripples filter to bring in distortion with a careful resonance/cutoff balance. Mangrove goes to Ripples then to Pico DSP for additional distortion and crunchiness.

Some sound effects from Plaits are bounced around in the Tapographic Delay.

Recorded to cassette. Mastered with Ozone etc. in Reaper.

Cortini and Buchla :"

Live annotated performance: Buchla 208c Easel Command avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to explore how to use a patch that my 3 year old son put together. I am using annotations to try to teach some of my thought process when I'm making these improvisations. This is entirely live and unrehearsed. The goal of this piece of electronic music was to find musical ways to use the combination of the Pulsar to pitch with the Envelope Generator to Timbre in the complex oscillator. I was able to pull off his favorite sounds: Ambulance and Truck Motor. The combination of the two modulations allows me to create some interesting rhythmic concepts. This is a relatively simple patch and doesn't need many connections to get something that can sound extremely complex. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through a few eurorack modules that I will detail below. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!

Patch Notes:
Buchla 208c Easel Command audio to 4ms Tapographic Delay to Make Noise X-pan controlled by Intellijel Quadrax and Tangle Quartet. Audio from Eurorack output to Boss RC-5 loop pedal and Eventide H9 reverb.
Live patching: in annotations"

Why to Modular - 1 - Overview

Published on Sep 10, 2018 Knobs

"Have you been wondering about modular?
How about not wondering about it at all?

Either way!
Now is your chance.

If you're anything like us, you've probably known about modular for a good while but haven't had a clear reason to dive in.

Over the next few weeks, we're going to talk about what makes modular special. How it might help you and take you to places you couldn't go otherwise. It's an imaginative and entirely different way to make music, and one you may be more ready for than you realize.

Maybe.
Let's find out.
