"The VL-1 was the first instrument of Casio's VL-Tone product line, and is sometimes referred to as the VL-Tone. It combined a calculator, a monophonic synthesizer, and sequencer. Released in June 1979, it was the first commercial digital synthesizer.

"Casio VL-tone VL-1 electronic musical instrument and calculator. It comes with its vinyl case and original cardboard box, which is worn. It also comes with the original instructions and a small songbook, "Assorted Melodies for VL-1." It is super-clean and looks like it was never used or used VERY little. The battery compartment is clean, too. It takes four AA batteries or could work with an ac adaptor (not included). It is fun and compact -- it is a bit under 12 inches long and under 3 inches wide."

The VL-Tone from the year 1981 is a combination of a calculator, a synthesizer and sequencer.

The Synthesizer is programmable. LSI-chip (NEC D1867G)
- square oscillator
- low pass filter
- ADSR envelope

The video shows the ADSR Synthesizer function. You can create easy own cool sounds with 8bit charme.
In the demo track I used only self programmed sounds, including the drums.

"After the Casio VL-1, this is by far the best Keyboard/Calculator, hands down. Such a unique little creature. It actually has a real time sequencer for recording and playback. A built in vibrato and 2 full octaves. Fairly loud for its size. Just like any VL, it also has built in melodies, tempo up / down and one key / auto play functions. Very impresive and very rare. A must have for any Calculator or Casio collector. Or if your like me and have a sicknes for unique vintage gear, toys, or what my parents always called......CRAP!"

"The TOTE A TUNE is a real unique and warm sounding toy. I recommend this to anyone who likes that FARFISA / VOX / ACETONE sound. Of course, Its a joke to really compare these to compact organs. But made in 1971, I dont think you will be dissapointed with its tone. Also, the CASIO or CASIOTONE MT-400v filter is no way comparable to MOOG, ARP, KORG, ROLAND, ect. but it is nice to have around as a something different. The filter and white noise will please you if you keep this in mind. Was also realesed as the GTR Orgatron. Same thing, Different color."

"Quick improvised tutorial on how to program sounds in 'ADSR' mode on the Casio VL-Tone. I forgot to mention that the sound selector has to be set to 'ADSR' for this to work. Also, once you've programmed your sound in, it will be held in memory until you change it, even if you power the unit off."

Some problems due to the keyboard size. It sounds nice when you feel the VL TONE sounding "Duophonic".

"Lovely little Radio Shack rebadging of the Casio VL-Tone with programmable ADSR synth mode.

Works great. Pretty good condition for its age. Battery compartment clean as shown. Includes original soft case.

PDF’s of VL-1 manual are free online including pages on ADSR info and resetting after adding new batteries.

Tips:
After adding new batteries change mode to Cal then press the recessed reset button on the bottom.

To enter ADSR mode use Cal mode then press MC, enter ADSR codes, the press blue M+ button to save, then change to Play mode."

Casio VL Tone with Roland Tape Delay, EMX1, EPS 16+, Microbrute

"I found my VL Tone VL-1 yesterday. It might sound cheesy through that little speaker, but plug it in to some FX and it may raise your eyebrow. Also, you can program a sequence of up to 100 notes. That's what I did here. Then you hit the "One Note Play" buttons and it will play back your sequence one note at a time. The fun of this is that you can control the timing of each note. Vary it up, put in a sequence of whatever length you want, and it gets really cool."

Now to find the recordings made with the Yamaha MT 4track cassette recorder. Also had an Electro Harmonics SUPER SPACE DRUM and Boss DR 55. Sold all but the VL- tone and I use it regularly."
