Yamaha CSY-1 Demo / Look inside

Published on Jan 8, 2015 opl3toshiba

"This is a demo of the Yamaha CSY-1 organ / synthesizer. The home organ case can be deceiving; this instrument has a built in fully programmable monophonic synthesizer. The built in synthesizer is identical to the Yamaha SY-1, Yamaha's first monophonic synthesizer made in 1974. When listening to this you'll hear the signature classic synth sound that defined Yamaha throughout their more famous CS-series. The VCO, VCF, and VCA modules in this synthesizer are derived from the circuits in the famous Yamaha GX-1 which was used by musicians including Keith Emerson and bands including Led Zeppelin."

Overdubbing naive synthlines on the Yamaha SY-1

YouTube via RothHandle
"A pretty interesting day in the studio...By accident I found the first little thing I recorded with the Tenori on and I decided to a handful overdubs...The day ended on a high note with listening and finishing a mix for Andreas Morland, the song All the time...

This film shows me recording a very naive synthline on the Yamaha SY-1.

This film was shot amy studio Roth-Händle. It is located in Sundbyberg, a suburb to Stockholm.

Yamaha SY-1 Analogue Synthesiser

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Great example of the Yamaha SY-1 synthesiser. This is from the mid 1970's and is in brilliant condition for its age.

It works perfectly and sounds lovely and vibrant; has a full synth section with many controls to modify the sounds. It is like a baby CS80 with the ability to imbue a real expressive feel into the sounds thanks to aftertouch(Think Blade runner synth leads)

There are a few marks here and there consistent with a synthesiser of this age, but there is nothing to detract from its beautiful good looks - The wood casing is also in very good condition."

Kebu - Sticky strut (Yamaha SY-1 demo)

YouTube via kebunator — June 12, 2010 — "This is a song demonstrating the sounds of the Yamaha SY-1 synthesizer. Since it is a monophonic analog synth, no chords can be played. The song was made by multitracking to a computer. No other effects were used than a Roland Space Echo and channel EQ. The drums are sampled. For mixdown, the tracks were subgrouped and transfered to a Tascam 38 8-track tape recorder. The song was mixed in realtime with an analog mixer to a stereo cassette deck. EQ and limiting was used for the final digital master."

"Java" - on Yamaha SY-1

Published on Jul 11, 2016 organfairy

"This is one of those melodies that has been been performed by so many artist that it is hard to find out who was first. But according to Wikipedia it was written by Allen Toussaint and later made popular by Al Hirt.

It was just an attempt by me to play something on my newly restored Yamaha SY-1 synthesizer. I recorded it without the usual multitracking but just a single stereo track. I did edit it slightly though because the levels of the various presets on the synthesizer are not well matched so I had to adjust the level between the verses. So I have edited out the parts where I adjust between preset."

"This is a perfect condition Yamaha SY-2 analog Synthesizer. It is the grand brother of the first synthesizer to be built by Yamaha, the SY-1 (1974). It is the same with these upgrades: Built-in hard case, legs that can be stored in the case's lid, resonant high pass filter added alongside the resonant low pass, VCA envelope controls expanded to full ADSR. The aftertouch works fully which is rare on these synth."

Yamaha Electone "Synths"

Video of the Yamaha D-80 by Mattias. I always seem to forget that some of the Yamaha Electone home organs had synth sections and with the D-80, an arpeggiator as well.

Frank who is an Electone enthusiast posted the following on AH and gave me the ok to put it up here:

"I've got the 415: image

which is probably the last of their analogue spinet organs.

Very cool machine. The solo synth on mine sounds very SY-1 or SY-2'ish. You can have pitch and/or filter mod with left-to-right wiggling of the solo section keys too. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it can be pretty expressive.

The strings, with soft attack and longer release, through the synphonic ensemble (BBD ensemble) or the rotary speaker (!) can be very pleasant.

Jeff Koepper tried mine a couple of weeks ago and got all sorts of cool un-home-organ-like things out of it.

Yamaha made a whole bunch of these kinds of miniature three manual organs with solo synths in them. Earliest is probably the DK-40, then at least there was the D-80, D-85 and 415. The D-85 and 415 seem to be nearly identical, feature wise.

The DK-40 is technologically not too distant from the earliest group of Yamaha analogue organs, and I suspect it shares similar circuitry to the YC series of organs.

Also, the DK-40 has a 'fourth' manual, in the form of a separate 'portamento' synth, which is played from a ribbon controller to the left of the solo synth keys. You can just barely see it in this image the green tabs control the portamento ribbon, which extends right in front of them.

I kid myself that the 415 is sorta like a cut down EX-1. It isn't really, but it's fun to pretend, and I don't anticipate ever owning an EX-1, for a number of reasons! :-)

Frank
Electone enthusiast"

Update via buckystoppz in the comments:
"I also have the 415 and use it to death! People are sleeping on these, I got it for $120 on eBay locally. They were about $8000 new in the early eighties."

Yamaha SY-1 1974 Monophonic Analog Synth

Demo in the listing previously posted here.

"Beginning with the release of the SY-1 in 1974, Yamaha's rich history of development and production of synthesizers has now reached past the 40-year milestone. As a musical instrument that lets you create exciting new sounds and express yourself freely, this synthesizer has been at the cutting edge of electronic music making ever since it first arrived on the scene. What's more, the technologies perfected in order to make this instrument a reality are now being put to use in all kinds of audio-related devices, and we can rightly say that this synth truly embodies the evolution of modern music.

Everything works on this keyboard. Sounds great!"
