MGMT - Kids short cover on Alesis Ion synthesizer

YouTube via adzy31 | November 25, 2008 |

"me trying to recreate some of the sounds from "Kids" by MGMT. this is one take, the drums are from Reason and the rest is all from the Ion.

A few mistakes but i find it hard to multitask... bass, lead, keyboard and foot pedal are too many things for me to do at once :P

fairly short - i was going to record the entire song but thought....if i'm not singing on it, there's no point really, as the background music is fairly repetitive. maybe if i can find someone with a decent voice we can cover it properly?

the audio is straight from my digicam. i recorded the audio in this on the PC but the volume was messed up, and it sounds alright from the camera anyway."

And the original track (note this is not the official video, see below):

Lyrics: You were a child, Crawling on your knees toward it, Making momma so proud, But your voice is too loud, We like to watch you laughing, You pick the insects off plants, No time to think of consequences [Chorus: Control yourself, Take only what you need from it/him, A family of trees wanted, To be haunted] The water is warm, But it’s sending me shivers, A baby is born, Crying out for attention, The memories fade, Like looking through a fogged mirror, Decision to decisions are made, And not bought, But I thought this wouldn’t hurt a lot. I guess not.

About Abby and Rafael: www.myspace.com/abrafever
Just to set the story straight: the facepainted kids in the video are a boy and girl from Los Angeles, two friends of mine, names Raf and Abby. MGMT was not involved in the making of this video, however, they became involved down the line.
The story goes like this: December 2007: Rushing to make a due date for a USC Music Video class, I ask my friends Raf and Abby to appear in my video. I like the way they bounce off of each other despite completely different personality types, and think they both have interesting faces. Raf didn't want to shave so I didn't push him. We shot in one night, I cut overnight, turn it in and call it the worst thing I've done so far.
January 2008: On a whim one night while visiting home in Austin, Texas, I throw the video on Youtube just for kicks.
April 2008: Ray Tintori, who has directed 3 official videos for MGMT, finds my fan video online and invites myself and my two actors to come to New York to appear in MGMTs next official video for Electric Feel.
May 2008: We go to New York and have a great time on the set with the band and all their friends."

And the twisted not for kids official version:

Anyone know what synths they use? The top one in the pic looks a bit like a KORG Poly-800.

MGMT - Time To Pretend cover on Alesis Ion synthesizer

YouTube via adzy31
"Another attempt at covering an MGMT track, randomly decided to start this yesterday morning. The drum track is from Reason, all other sounds are from the Ion, played live (apart from the plucking sound which i prerecorded as I didn't have enough hands :P)

Again, no vocals, i tried adding some but it was just bad. Unlike my previous MGMT video (Kids) i decided to do the whole song."

Makeshift Omnichord with Korg nanoPAD, GlovePIE & Alesis Ion

YouTube via adzy31

"Recently discovered the amazing 80s instrument the Omnichord (and its newer cousin the Q-Chord) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENY3BX... - brilliant kind of electronic autoharp where you have individual buttons for a load of different chords... and a touch pad you can strum and it plays notes in that chord in some kind of amazing arpeggiated goodness.

This is my attempt to recreate the Omnichord interface with a Korg nanoPAD. I set up all the pads so they're just sending control data rather than note data, and via GlovePIE the control data from the x axis of the touch pad is divided up into 13 regions, each of which is assigned a note from an arpeggiated chord. the chords are chosen by the top row of pads. bottom right pad sends a note off message. Right now it's all chords in the key of C but something which can be changed - it's just a pain writing out the note data for the arpeggiated chords.

Midi data is being sent out from GlovePIE running on my PC to my Alesis Ion synthesizer, on a patch I forgot the original name of (renamed it when i tweaked it a bit) then through some reverb on my guitar amp.

All sounds very technical but the end result is pretty fun to use :)"

Del Shannon - Runaway solo on Alesis Ion

YouTube via adzy31.

Be sure to see this post.

"i love this song... mostly for the eerie solo in the middle. apparently performed on a heavily modified Clavioline the keyboard player dubbed the "musitron". good name...

unsurprisingly i can't get the sound right for this...probably need to get some effects going on."

Pink Floyd - On The Run attempt on Alesis Ion synthesizer

video upload by adzy31

"Me playing a version of Pink Floyd's "On The Run". This one I did without the original track playing in the background. it's just one take, i didn't have time to add all the random talking and footstep noises and panning bass sounds and backwards guitar played with a mic stand etc etc... but maybe that'll happen at some point.

it could do with a bit more variation in the sequenced sound but i'll just have to keep experimenting with all the magical features of this synth.

btw for anyone who is interested it is fairly possible to use this synth's tracking generator as a crude step sequencer, hence this video - instructions can be found in the alesis ion/micron Yahoo group, message number 15215. I used a patch from 'uralmoto2001' (to whom i'm very grateful :)) which I found in the files section of the group, with a few edits, as the basis for this video.
