Akai AX80 & Red Sound Darkstar XP2

via this auction

Note these are on Craigslist which I don't normally post, but I know the seller and he supports the site. :)

"$450 - Akai AX80 8 voice vintage analog synth in great working shape. This synth was babied after purchase in my non smoking studio and never played out. Fully functional with the following cosmetic issues:

Minor scuffs due to age and in the condition I purchased it in. There's one small cosmetic ding above the Hold button and LED as you can see - the button and LED work fine. Aside from this the membrane is pristine. Looks brand new. No depressions or cracks.

One key was cracked so I glued a small ram chip on it years ago as you can see. It is smooth, not rough to the touch, and feels fine. See Pics.

VCA 30 Velocity LED bar is out. This is purely cosmetic. The parameter works fine and you can see the values change on the red numerical display by the data knob. Only the EQ looking LED is out as you can see in the pics.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This is a great sounding vintage 8 voice polyphonic analog synth and it is 100% sonically functional and solid. The AX80 uses the same CEM3372 Filter/Mix/VCA chips as on the Oberheim Matrix-12, Xpander, SCI Prophet-600 and T8. For a full list of what synths use the 3372 see here."

"$300 - RedSound DARKSTAR XP2 - Redsound's eight voice virtual analog desktop synth with a joystick. Like new."

"This Akai AX80 synthesizer is in good condition. There is moderate wear on one of the front corners, and one of the keys on the keyboard was broken, then glued back into place (works fine). Otherwise normal wear for a 35 year old keyboard.

The akai works great, and all the led light are working and intact! I’ve noticed that if I haven’t turned it on in a while, shows it’s age and tends to have a “warm up” period, where it fades in an out and plays “fuzzy” (volume) until it has been on for a bit and works fine."

Akai AX80 Analog Synthesizer Keyboard

"Perfect working Akai AX80 analog keyboard synthesizer with built in MIDI and a massive 8 voices! This uses the same CEM3372 filter chips as the Oberheim Matrix 12 and Xpander. All of the switches are responsive and MIDI has been fully tested. Keep in mind the MIDI spec is over 30 years old on this synth so it is limited compared to modern synths."

Note the low BIN is because this one needs some work.

"This listing is for an excellent cosmetic condition AKAI AX80 Analog Synthesizer. This unit has been tested functional except it needs a voice chip replacement. Depending on the mode, some keys don't respond...about one note per octave. If you switch modes, it is different keys that don't work. That tells me it isn't the key contact triggers, but the commonly failing voice chip.

All display meters illuminate and are response. All keys have excellent feel and are functional. The small black tune control knob on the left side is not the original color/style but is the correct size and functional."

"Here's an awesome Akai AX80, in fully functional condition and sounds amazing. All key contacts were cleaned as well as the battery replaced within the past year. It's a pleasure to play with a great feeling keybed and offers many usable sounds. The worst part about it are the blemished end caps which look much worse in the pictures accented by the flash. These could be restored or covered by someone if they have the urge, I never really cared since it looks great in the studio and is a sonically amazing!"

"Akai AX80 in working condition. There is one dead key, it is marked with the blue tape in the photos. That dead key does respond to midi. There are surface scratches and cosmetic issues, but all membrane buttons, and knobs, and dials, and wheels all work fine..."

AKAI AX60

"This Akai AX 60 has had the power supply capacitors replaced with higher quality ones with a lifespan of 2 to 8 times the originals. It's been recalibrated (and was in dire need of it); it has also has its power cable replaced (2 prong male) permanent wired to a standard grounded 3 prong IEC type (so a common computer/studio power cable can be used). It comes with firmware version 1.2 (the latest/ most stable version)...

I've paid extra attention to this particular piece and every pot, slider, and switch has been cleaned and tested.

Aside from being a rarer synth , the main reason I decided upon this particular synth was for the following reasons:
- it has a basic MIDI implementation for send and receiving MIDI note on (and pitch and mod wheel data, if I'm not mistaken) but the brass tax is I could run it from an external sequencer
-it allows for physical adjustment of most of the settings (albeit I'n pretty sure it's not possible to automate over MIDI)- it felt like the best option between the Akai AX80, Sequential circuits Six Trak, and the Split Eight/Multi Trak
-like all the aforementioned synths this one has the Curtis CEM 3394 "synth on a chip" that is also in the Doepfer Dark Energy and (my main reason) Namco's vintage arcade video game machines

Out of all the synths out there- for those who want "video game sounds"- IMHO the Akai AX60 was the best option (albeit all the other synths probably allow for more control/automation over MIDI)."

via this auction

"This synthesizer is in excellent working condition, and has just been cleaned/serviced. Brand-new back-up battery has been installed, with 96 patches loaded and ready to play. All keys, velocity sensitivity, 8 voices, membrane buttons, VFD screens, alpha-numeric displays, potentiometers, pitch/mod wheels, ins/outs, midi, and chord function are working great as they should. Cosmetically, this synth is in excellent condition, with only some minor scuffs and scratches to mention. The AX80 has 8x CEM3372 voice/filter IC's for beautifully lush analog patches, as well as tight-punch, perfect for bass patches. This was AKAI's answer to Oberheim's MATRIX series, and shares many tonal qualities to those synths..."

"Excellent condition. Couple of small scratches. One display does not work (one to the very right - EG/VCA) However unit is still fully usable as the parameters for this display section can be seen on the LED function and data display when selected.

'The AX80 has the privilege of being the first pro-keyboard produced by Akai, released in 1984. It's an eight-voice programmable analog synthesizer with a full 61-note keyboard and a series of techno-looking LCD bar-graph displays running across the top of the keyboard. Two analog oscillators per voice plus a sub oscillator provide the basis of its punchy analog sounds that can be described as similar to a Chroma Polaris or Roland Juno 106.'"

"The AX80 is the first pro-keyboard produced by Akai, released in 1984. It's an eight-voice programmable analog synthesizer with a full 61-note keyboard. Two analog oscillators per voice plus a sub oscillator provide the basis of its punchy analog sounds that can be described as similar to a Roland Juno 106. Very good bass, brass, synth sounds, and effects are possible. The keyboard is in great condition for being 30 years old. The only issue I have found is the 5 LCD screens that show a visual example of the parameters do not work. This does not affect any sort of navigation or functionality of the keyboard. It is a perfectly working keyboard that sounds incredible."

Pics of the inside below.

"This AX80 is in MIGHTY slick condition. From the sleek black sides to the sharp retro fluorescent displays, this AX rocks.

The synth has been gone through and had two CEM3372 ICs replaced with new old stock ICs, keyboard contacts cleaned, power supply voltages inspected, all ribbon cables secured, and a general cleaning.
Included is a very rare AKAI branded soft case that would have been ordered separately back in the day. This is the only one ive ever seen and it definitely ties the whole vibe together.

8 Voices w/ 2 DCOs and 1 Sub Oscillator per voice
61 Keys
64 User Patches and 32 Presets (User Memory currently empty, ready for you to save your own lush pads!)
Full MIDI integration
Rad Vacuum Fluorescent Displays (all functioning correctly)"
