Shipping News by David Morley - ARP 2500 Modular synthesizer demonstration

YouTube via buchla300

"Here is a demo of the ARP 2500 modular I made. No other instrument was used.
My objective was to show off the range of the instrument in a musical context.

Please visit http://www.davidmorley.com and check out my other works and a better quality version of "Shipping News"

The video was something I knocked up in iMovie just in time for the Oscars...
Multitracked in Logic 8. Mixed on my D&R Orion desk. Reverb came from my EMT 246 and an Eventide H3000 was used for delay. "

Roland R8 MKII pattern editing R-8 drum machine

YouTube via buchla300
"Just showing how cool the Roland R8 sequencer is. Many just use it as a straight ahead drum machine, but t's when you start doing realtime pitch/decay/pan/nuance/velocity editing that it becomes cool.
Pitching and changing the pan and decay of the individual sounds after they have been recorded.
I used this zillions of times with Andrea Parker for her stuff and remixes we did and for my own stuff. I know the guys from Autechre and many other artists used one . Great box.
The R8 MKII has more built in sounds and more memory. Worth finding over the MKI version."

ARP Odyssey analogue synthesiser - lead sound with FM

YouTube via buchla300
"ARP Odyssey - A simple lead sound but using the s/h mixer to modulate VCO2 with itself. Also shows the ring modulator and FM of the filter with VCO 2
The odyssey is a superb little synth. In my opinion underrated compared to the Minimoog
It has quite a few functions that are missing on the Minimoog (S&H, Ring Mod, PWM, Duophonic, LFO trigger of the envelopes, initial gain, Hi Pass filter, VCO Sync etc) and is certainly well worth the money they go for. Usually my first suggestion for people looking for a decent analogue synthesizer.
Mine is pretty rare as it has a factory fitted second filter which is superb. It can do lopass, lopass 4 pole, notch, bandpass and vc high pass as well as the inbuilt hipass.
Quite a few different versions of these but I think they all sound good."

Crumar Spirit analog synth

YouTube via buchla300

"Great little synth I just got back from being repaired by James Walker at Synth Repair Services. Don't have much experience of it, so just me noodling. I like it towards the end (after 5 minutes) where I add S&H to the filter. Very flexible with 2 filters and some great modulation possibilities and a pretty funky Arpeggiator." Odd note: this one sounds a bit like my Waldorf Pulse Plus.

Korg X-911 Guitar Synthesizer

video upload by buchla300

"Just a demo of my latest purchase!

A funky little Korg X-911. Tracks quite well. Just fooling around on the Video. May modify this to be a little modular as actually there is a lot of stuff in this little box according to this site http://home.swipnet.se/~w-49485/x911.htm"

EMS VCS3 Analog Universal Sequencer

images via this auction

"An absolutely super rare EMS Item here: The Universal Sequencer complete with see through perspex top Based on the Synthis AKS sequencer but much improved. It has clock in and this can be a click or an audio track (Line or Mic)! It also has simultaneous Cv/Gate out for the Sequencer and the keyboard. These are positive and negative gate. In short, you can use it with most analog synths. It has a connector to go straight to the EMS VCS3 or Synthi A and this is how I have been using it. I have included a video below of it in action This is one of the rarest analogue sequencers ever made and I doubt you will find another one easily. If you are an EMS collector or user, this is a must. It may not be the cheapest sequencer around, but it adds that value at least to your EMS setup AND it's a useable and creative tool It works perfectly. You program the notes from the keyboard, which makes it more musical than most analog sequencers, where you have to tune each knob. It can run on it's internal clock or externally and each step can be free when run internally or run externally it is quantized to the incoming clock. Many questions coming in and I will answer them here: The 4 keys on the left above the keyboard are for real time transposition. On the right there is a gap key for programming rests. The dials are for pitch scaling and gate length as well as whether the keyboard or sequencer is triggering the output... In the Middle you have rec and play buttons. It will control any 1 v/oct keyboard and will clock to any external trigger such as another sequencer or trigger out from a drum machine (my TR808 usually triggers it in my setup) Yes, it is THAT rare. Someone told me it was made for a trade show and that they were made in a very limited run."

Polymoog - slightly broken!

YouTube via buchla300. via this auction via dlmorley on the forum.
"Here is my Polymoog 203a taken out of it's case for the first time in years! I bought it as in need of work, but it doesn't seem that bad. A few voices don't work, sometimes craps out and some waveshapes need sorting etc etc but, worth doing though as I LOVE polymoogs. Better than people think. Crap phone quality video. Sorry!" images here

Polyfusion Modular S&H

YouTube via buchla300.
"Once again, not musical really but just showing the S&H and Filter on my Polyfusion. I will do some musical stuff on it soon. Ex Moog employees built these to higher spec and although some might prefer the character of the Moog, I prefer this sonically and feature wise. The quality is absolutely incredible. 5 VCO, 3 LFO, 2 Lo Pass Filters, 2 Hi Pass Filters, 6 Envelopes (2 voltage controlled), dual ring mod, dual s&h, Voltage Controlled Reverb, Octave Divider, 6 Voltage Controlled Amplifiers, Voltage Controlled Phaser, Envelope Follower, Quadrature LFO, Parametric Equalizer, Variable Formant Filter, Quantizer, 7 Mixers, Various DC sources and Attenuators Plus a Velocity & Aftertouch sensitive Keyboard. This used to belong to Hans Zimmer btw A Sequencer rack would be nice, but hey, you can't have it all!"

Polyfusion Modular VCO tracking

YouTube via buchla300.

"Not really an exciting musical video but just showing how accurate the Polyfusion's VCO's are. They have a 10 octave range and track incredibly well. At some point I patch one VCO to another to do some FM and even then, they remain totally in tune (except for when I put one VCO too low by mistake) Try this on most analogues and it just doesn't work! Also, they sound massive. Probably not via YouTube, but standing in front of it is quite an experience."

Dynacord ADD One Drum sampler

YouTube via buchla300

"A small example of what the ADD-One can do. The buttons I am pressing are the manual trigger buttons, but it can be triggered by pads, gates or midi. Each sample (12 bit 50khz) can be filtered (same filters as the Sequential Circuits Studio 440 btw) and modulated in many ways and can be repeated and re-triggered in various ways (hence the rhythmic patterns that play just by hitting one trigger)
Quite possibly the best drum sampler ever."

"Buchla 200 analogue modular in action The touch keyboard is working as one 16 note sequencer while the smaller 5 x 4 sequencer makes the other sequence.."
Vid2: Buchla 200
"Some more buchla. The chords are set up by the 5 x 4 sequencer which is just triggered from the 4 touch plates on the left. The sequence is one oscillator sequenced from the main touchpad."

"I was checking the ARP 2500, so decided to video whilst noodling. Will make something better later... AMAZING synth. Funky, fat, flexible."
