An Interview with Davide Mancini of soundmachines

via Davide Mancini on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge. You'll find the full interview on synthemodulaire (English towards the bottom).

On the creation of soundmachines:

"Hi Davide, could you tell us a few words about the genesis of Soundmachines and the link with SPES ?

Hi Wilfried, thank you very much for the opportunity to tell our story and aspirations!
In 2009 I started playing with modular synthesizers, and in my spare time at home I interfaced ad Arduino to a Babblebot chip and made it into a module.
I was just enjoying myself doing some videos on YT and suddenly several people started asking me if the module would be put on the market, somehow.
I had those requests on the backburner for some years but never forget about it! In the meantime I was more and more involved in the modular ‘world’ and, as many of us, loosing a lot of nighttime surfing Matrixsynth, Muff Wiggler and other bad places..
in 2012 I started to think about entering the market from the inside of my company, SPES.
I am the chief innovation officer at SPES, an 80 people research and development (and production management) company based in central Italy. We work on many stuff including household appliances, fitness equipment, motor control, industrial automation, domotics, wearable systems, sensors and plant remote management all over Europe.
I took some time to make a rough business plan and I presented it to the co-founders of the company and we decided to put resources and money in this ‘adventure’. For our company, that tipically works as an OEM, this was big news and many new things to approach! The project was innovative in many ways: a product imagined, developed and built integrally by our own, a direct relationship to the final users, an e-commerce site, a global market etc…
Obviously the most part of the company was already there, purchasing, administration, logistics and obvioulsy design, but many new things have been addressed in the last months…. It was exciting and challenging!!!
So, soundmachines was born as a brand of SPES, and we started operations at the end of July 2013. We are VERY young !!"

Soundmachines NS1nanosynth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Comes with original box, manual(s), patch cables, USB cable, power supply and - BONUS - the NS1nanobridge (pictured) which makes this Italian import fully compatible with Eurorack systems. A compact, powerful, fun and surprisingly robust-sounding instrument."We at soundmachines thought about a simple and cheap platform that will transport the main characteristic of a modular analog synthesizer in a small and friendly format, to be well recognised by musicians, makers and tinkerers worldwide. A small, but loyal to its roots, instruments of sound creation. With a digital platform added as a bonus. The soundmachines NS1nanosynth is born.Let’s talk now about dimensions. Because size does matter. Absolutely. We created something that you can extract from your bag, or a big pocket, and start patching, manipulating and definitely and positively playing. On the train? On a plane back home? At your sister’s wedding? Maybe, after all, also on a stage. The entire platform, that is a complete, albeit simple, analog modular synthesizer, is the same height and a little wider than ONE standard 5U synthesizer module. One single module. But on board the soundmachines nanomodular you have a saw core thermally stabilized v/oct VCO, a 12db lowpass and bandpass VCF, two LFOs, one loopable ADSR envelope, a standard VCA, two twistable attenuators, two pot controllers and a plethora (more than a dozen!) of “micro” modules like mixers, multiples, sample and hold, sum/sub blocks, inverters, logic or, and, nand, analog dividers, clock dividers, fixed voltage generators and several ‘sensor blocks’.""

New Soundmachines SY1synesthesia at Meet The Knobbers

Published on May 26, 2013 Davide Mancini·16 videos

"We displayed the new module (along with many others!!!) at "Meet The Knobbers" in Siena. Also in this video Andrea Pedra (Head of the organization!) playing with Gattobus modular :)

You can associate up to 5 CV input with 5 DMX channel. In this case you see just an LFO going into the 'dimmer' channel of an DMX RGB fixture, but no one stops you from controlling a moving head, a strobo, a smoke generator, a.... whateveryouwant as long as it has DMX capability. The final module will have a switch and a very simple serial interface to program the correspondance between CV channel and DMX channel!"

Below via Davide Mancini on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge: "Soundmachines gear at work!!!!! The Android version of our software connects via bluetooth with the RC1radiostar that control the RGB channels of a DMX light fixture by means of our NEW MODULE: SY1synesthesia!!!! check a little video on our website! www.sound-machines.it"

(arches) tactile universal interface Kickstarter

soundmachines (arches) tactile universal interface is now on Kickstarter. Click through for full details. Additional demo videos further below.

"Blending inspiration, power and ease of use, we created the perfect evolution of the concept of tactile controller. Built on the foundation of our first class touch interfaces (LS1lightstrip and LP1lightplane), found today on thousands of eurorack systems around the world, we designed a beautiful work of art and technology.

(arches) put a never seen before set of controllers at your fingertips. Sliders, lightstrips (with rec/loop capabilities), lightplanes/thumbpads with z-axis sensitivity and a row of pressure sensitive buttons. Behind those state of the art touch controllers lies a high-speed microcontroller that joins the elements to create keyboards, sequencers, arpeggiators and, finally, your perfect performance setup.

Soundmachines know-how in capacitive touch control surface is unparalleled in eurorack. With thousands of LS1lightstrips and LP1lightplanes in the market, is the name to consider when talking about reliable, simple and flawless touch CV generators/recorders. Following customer’s requests and nurturing interest for integrated, easy to use and alternative control interfaces, we came up with a series of ideas that adapted our robust technology to earlier concepts developed by the fathers of the modular synthesizers. The key target was the design and implementation of a carefully conceived product with the maximum attention to usability, highest possible degree of functionalities and an affordable pricing."

Playlist:

1. (arches) demo #1
(arches) controlling a modulör114 vcos and filter...
2. ((arches)) prototype demo 2 [previously posted]
Soundmachines universal tactile interface is alive!
(arches) demo #2
A more complex demo using the arches as the centerpiece of an improvisation. Left part is used as a position sensitive keyboard that drives one of the Modulor114 oscillators and the cutoff of the other oscillator (driven by a TuringMachine and the internal M114 quantizer). The second lightstrip opens the drum VCA, the third drives the bitcrusher that shreds a rhythmic pattern generated with a filter. The last lightstrip is used as a quantized controller that controls an SD1simpledrum in synth mode with a string patch bathed in the SD1 internal reverb....
3. (arches) prototype demo 3
(arches) demo #3
A dual voice, dual machines, demo (just the Modulör114 as sound source). Lefthand drives the main voice (saw wave and vcf) and three lightstrips used as: #2:pitch(quantized) to the second VCO, #3: triangle waveshaping and #4: triangle LFO amount to voice1 VCA. Internal Modulör114 effect used for the delay.
4. (arches) prototype demo 4
Left pad gate pings the filter of the Modulör114 with a short envelope and the Y axes modifies the filter freq. Right pad plays a whole tones scale on the X and changes the freq of the second VCO used as an LFO 9 on the X axis. The second lightstrip on the right side modulates the PWM of VCO1.
On the ((arches)) thumbpads are always available at outputs (x,y and pressure). You can choose individually to use a gate output or not.
5. (arches) prototype demo 5
Two keyboards drive two voices of the Modulör114. Left keyboard (KB3) drives the first VCO and sets the pwm with the slider position. Left thumbpad drives the VCF of the second VCO that is driven by the upper buttons keyboard (KB1).
6. (arches) prototype demo 6
In this ambient/melodic oriented demo, the (arches) controls three voices coming from two Modulör114 synths, a shaped triangle for the "solo" part, a composed heavily pwm'd bass and a saw/sub arpeggio. Each of those parts are controlled in timbre by some features of the (arches). Enjoy.
