Quick Test After Repairing My Synth Tech MOTM-410 Triple Resonant Filter Module

video upload by John L Rice

"I built this module almost 14 years ago but made a mistake (I swapped positions of two adjacent resistors causing the Rate knob to not work correctly) so tonight I took the time to find the problem and repair it."

Explanation Of Previously Posted 5U Modular Synth Patch

video upload by John L Rice

"A quick unrehearsed video just handheld and using the iPad mic. The patch is almost the same but I hadn’t saved the effects settings so they are different and I notice I missed patching in modulation for two of the FM AIDS so I added that."

Eurorack Phasers

volume 3 video upload by John Schussler

"I got a Pittsburgh Modular Toad not long ago, and realized I'd not compared the WMD Orion to anything either. Figured I'd put them both together, and throw in the G-Storm Polychrome to help join this video with earlier comparisons of eurorack phasers.

The Orion is now discontinued, and the Toad is a limited edition that will sell out. Only the Polychrome is in continued production. Not that there aren't other phasers, mind you, just saying if you like these....

VCO is a Befaco Pony. Little bit of reverb to make it not so harsh, but not too much. That's about it. Enjoy.

Eurorack Phasers - Take 2

video upload by John Schussler

"(This is a 'headphones required' video. You won't hear half of what's going on if you don't listen in headphones.)

This is my second attempt at a video on eurorack Phasers. The first (linked here but not otherwise listed in my channel: Eurorack Phasers) contained a number of mistakes. I'm keeping it around because I actually find those mistakes interesting, and want to be able to remind myself.

In particular, I didn't understand a couple things:

1) The SynthTech E560 input isn't set up for Eurorack levels, it's set up for line levels. If you don't attenuate the input, it distorts rather badly.
2) You have to use BOTH outputs of any module (that has them) if you want to hear stereo phasing. It's the contrast between the source audio and the phased audio that makes the effect, and you need two outputs to make that happen.

So. Once again into the breach, I attempt to compare some eurorack phasers. I think somewhat more successfully this time.

Self Playing Eurorack Pipe Organ Patch

video upload by John L Rice

"A relatively simple and mostly self playing eurorack patch that sounds somewhat like a church pipe organ performance? A single Synth Tech Circuit Bent VCO "played" by the Vermona meloDICER pattern generator sequencer with the Strymon Megneto delay in the Pitch Shift setting giving it size and magic as I manually adjust the Wet and Repeats knobs. Additional modules used: Erica Synths Octasource LFO, Happy Nerding MMM VCF, Klavis Quadigy EG, Xaoc Devices Praga VCA/mixer, Circuit Abbey Unify mixer, ADDAC ADDAC812A meter.

The Tappan Zee (Gov. Mario M. Cuomo) Bridge - I-87, I-287, and NYS Thruway

video upload by CatSynth TV

"A ride along I-287, I-87 and the New York State Thruway westbound in Westchester and Rockland Counties, just north of New York City. Along the way we cross over the Hudson River on the Tappan Zee Bridge, also known as the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The original Tappan Zee Bridge open in 1955 - it was only designed for a life span of 50 years, and was showing signs of decay by the 2000s. It was replaced in 2017 by the new twin cable-stayed span that we see in this video.

Filmed in October 2023, with pockets of fall foliage colors visible.

Original music by Amanda Chaudhary, featuring drums by G Calvin Weston and Amanda Chaudhary on synthesizers and electronics:
QuBit Prism
Cherry Audio Elka-X and Sines
Arturia Pigments, Melltron V, and Stage 73
EastWest Ministry of Rock 2 (bass)
Strymon StarLab

The Room Outside Of Time 2

video upload by John L Rice

"A quick one I should have spent more time on, and also should NOT have spent ANY time on, but I wanted to record a bit of it for the memories! 😅

Unlike a lot of my recent complex sequencer experiments this one only uses 5 steps of a single row of one Moon 569 sequencer! The CV out is patched into a Synth Tech E102 Quad Temporal Shifter (shift register) and the 4 outputs go to 4 voices, each consisting of a MOTM-300 VCO, saw out to a Happy Nerding FM AID, to a Moon 517 VCF and finally to a Oakley Dual VCA. VCF and VCA modulation was from a Club Of The Knobs C911P poly EG and the FM AIDs and VCFs got additional modulation from a Krisp1 OCTO LFO. Effects are from the usual Strymon BigSky and Timeline pedals and Lexicon MX400 rack. I used the Roland A-88 keyboard to transpose the sequence via a MOTM-650 module and the bassy-lead was played on an Expressive E Osmose keyboard."

Paul T Schreiber of Synthtech / MOTM Retires From The Synth Business

"After 27 years, I have retired from the synthesizer business. I still have a #day_job which will last until Dec 1st. The last set of 16 modules shipped to Patchwerks in Seattle, including the last E520 Hyperions.

Is there a chance someone will buy my IP and continue the product like? I keep hoping. Thanks to everyone who were friends and customers."

---

The man behind MOTM and Synthtech/Synthesis Technology retires. Paul Schrieber was making modular synths in the MOTM 5U format before eurorack took off. He essentiall started his own format, 5U in height like Moog's MU 5U but different. See this old post for a pic of different modular formats. He made his modules available in both DIY and finished form. You all should be familiar with MOTM and Synthech if you are regulars of the site. If not, see the MOTM and Synthech labels for posts over the years.

Since the launch of this version of MATRIXSYNTH back in 2005, there have been a total of 831 MOTM posts, and roughly 367 Synthtech posts, including this one. I say roughly as there was another Synthtech that made the Chroma Cult - Rhodes Chroma MIDI Interface, that shares the Synthtech label I used to get the count. The first post to mention MOTM dates back to This EAR post on July 30, 2005, the second to MOTM Madness - Featuring Yamaha GX1 Filter clone on August 4, 2005. Sadly the mp3 linked there is gone. People let their sites go unfortunately. The first post to mention Synthtech is the Epic Son video by John L Rice from back on August 2, 2011. His designs also made it into non modular synths like this Studio Electronics Omega 8 w/ MOTM CS80 & 440 Filters.

Patch created by Simon Bader. https://linktr.ee/circadiansound

The Synthesis Technology E340 is a super-saw/sine oscillator capable of generating up to 8 waveforms per output. If you want massive bass and lead voices like the JP-8000 supersaw, or thick ambient drones as if played from a slow rotary speaker, the E340 is the perfect audio source for your synth patches.

Detune the swarm of oscillators using SPREAD or with randomly filtered noise using CHAOS and CHAOS BW (bandwidth). Reset the phase of all waveforms using the SYNC trigger input, which can use another oscillator to produce a sync-lead sound.

This module supports VCV Rack’s polyphonic cables, so with 16 voices, you can generate a total of 128 waveforms per output.

This VCV Rack software module uses the original firmware from the hardware Synthesis Technology E340 module.
