"I have been exploring the idea of Cybernetic processes in modular synthesis a bit this week. It follows seeing a really interesting series over on La Synthese Humaine’s YouTube channel

So, this patch might seem basic at first but actually its doing something quite interesting - it is using Cybernetics to play by itself

It is generating its own patterns by using feedback loops in the CV path and a non-linear CV circuit (in this case the Serge Wave Multiplier) to modify them

By setting the CV inputs on the returning feedback paths carefully, the patterns come to life and start to do things by themselves

In other words, there is just one single clock being used to generate the timing, and the variations are caused by the feedback path. There is no additional use of random generators or other clocks playing against each other, and no intervention from me

I have a lot more to explore, especially by using the Cybernetic principal on other systems like the Buchla, the Modcan or the Emu Modular - all of which have provisions for achieving self-playing patches using these ideas"

"A self-playing cybernetic patch made on the Modcan A-Series modular system

The modules have been set up so that they interact with each other using CVs and triggers generated by themselves, based upon two initial VCOs which are the source of all the sounds and also modulations. There are no Random Generators in this patch

In other words, by creating a modified feedback path between the audio outs of the VCOs and their own CV inputs, chaotic interactions occur, for both pitch and timing attributes. The modifier in this case is a VC Waveshaper

Another important part of the patch is the derivation of gate pulses from audio signals. For this, I am using a Gated Comparator module. There is also a Sample & Hold module and various other CV and timing modifiers and processors in the patch

The whole idea of cybernetics is to set up chaotic systems in a controlled and productive way, something that this Modcan synthesiser can do really well"

"Messing with the Modcan, along with the Serge. First I patched a wave shaped VCO on the Serge Paperface, using the Serge sequencer too. Then it goes over to the Modcan where the clock from the Serge triggers bass drum, snare and percussion sounds. Dance!

"A minimalist study on the Modcan A Series modular system. This is a self-playing patch which utilises two voltage controlled LFOs to generate the timing pulses, and random voltages to control pitch. There are also two audio samplers in the signal path which help generate the spikes

"A bunch of sketches on my new (old) Modcan A modular system. I damn well love this thing! Its such a beautifully designed system - offering utter uniqueness and flexibility. It seems to fall between West-coast and East-coast design philosophies - combining all the good things about modular synthesis in one giant bundle of fun. The system here is made up of original Modcan A modules and also Cyndustries A-format ones. These were made a bit later once the A-series format had become established around the mid 2000's. What is cool is that Cyndustries used to commission / licence designs from well known figures in the synth design world - and put the names of the designers on the front of the modules. It reads like a who's who of the geeky electronic scene, with names like Nyle Steiner, Chris Huggett, Jurgen Haible, Don Buchla, Ken Stone, Bernie Hutchins, Peter Granader, Serge Tcherepnin. Benge Fugue on the ARP 2500

"Here is a little piece I put together using the ARP2500 and a midi file. It is based on a Bach fugue, but I heavily manipulated the notes in my midi note editor so that it has the essence of the original but none of the actual melodies. I then sent the midi data to the ARP2500 via the Modcan MIDICV converter. The reverb is the EMT plate 140"

"Messing on the Modcan. In particular, I'm exploring the very interesting Cynthia Twin Wasp Filter. This is based on the EDP Wasp multi-mode filter, but it has two of them, controlled by one set of inputs and one output

Also in this patch is a simple drum machine setup using the sequencer trigger outputs

Theres also a tiny bit of reverb from the astonishing Roland R880 mainframe reverberation system
