buchla 200 matte

Published on Jun 9, 2019 zack dagoba

"Yet another experiment on the Buchla 200. This one is exploring the MARF, and using the 'stage address' cv input to randomise the way it selects the notes. This thing is so cool

ALSO! I've just noticed that I have got 1000 subscribers, thanks to everyone who has subbed - I'll try and keep my synth related sketches coming...

Self-paying on the Buchla 200

video by zack dagoba

"a self-playing patch, using some cybernetic elements:

Two VCOs (258) are cross modulated to produce an evolving sequence of clocks, not just random because the interactive nature of the cross modulation creates unexpected pauses and clusters - the envelope follower (model 230) helps in extracting the clocks. These are sent to an LPG which gates a modulating sound from the 259 - the main tone. The MARF sequences pitches, but these are shifted with a clocked random voltage, changing every 5 or 7 pulses (using the MARF programmable pulse out feature) There are 5 LFOs are all slightly different, and being clocked by more scaled down pulses from the MARF, so the LFOs are locked into the main set of pulses. The signal is split into several paths, one goes to the 277 delay (being modified by the same random voltage mentioned above) and the other going to the spring reverb, also being modified (by an LFO). These also go into 2 bandpass filters, being modulated with row 2 of the MARF. The stereo signal is being modified as well and the whole lot goes into the Buchla 100 signal leveller (model 172) and vintage eq (model 175)

THIRTEEN SYSTEMS by Benge

zack dagoba

"New album here: zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/album/thirteen-systems

Thirteen years after the release of his original synthesiser concept album, Twenty Systems, Benge brings you a follow-up of sorts, the similarly themed Thirteen Systems, an album of modular explorations, showcasing his evolving fascination with these modular machines

The pieces were originally commissioned by the newly formed Modulisme radio broadcast, Philippe Petit’s project to bring the music of underground modular artists together and provide a platform for the burgeoning electronic modular music scene that has been building momentum in recent years

There is one significant difference in the approach Benge took in the creation of this new Systems album compared to his first incarnation. The previous album used overdubbing techniques to layer the sound of each synthesiser upon itself to build up the tracks, but on this album Benge took the decision to play each piece in real time, without overdubs or edits, creating each piece as a live performance. This meant setting up each instrument in advance and either letting it play along by itself, or interacting with it as the pieces develop in various ways. Each performance was filmed and there is an accompanying 60 minute video that goes with the album

Track listing:

01 - 1967 Buchla 100
02 - 1968 Moog 3C
03 - 1969 EMS VCS3
04 - 1970 ARP 250005 - 1971 Buchla 200
06 - 1972 Serge Modular
07 - 1973 Emu Modular
08 - 1974 Paia 4700
09 - 1975 Polyfusion 2000
10 - 1976 Formant Modular
11 - 1977 Korg PS3100
12 - 1978 EMS Polysynthi
13 - 1979 Roland 100M

Entropical Paradise on the Buchla 100

video upload by zack dagoba

"This is a patch similar to the one published on page 141 of Allen Strange's 1972 book Electronic Music, under the heading Real-time Networks. It is a recreation of Douglas Leedy's Entropical Paradise patch from his 1969 album of the same name

This system is mostly original 1960s Buchla, and I have adapted the patch slightly to make use of the 191 Sharp Cutoff Filter, and to take out the 'birdsong' part of the patch which was originally done with pink noise / envelope follower modulation on the main VCO. I still used the VCO, but took out the modulation and put it through the Bandpass Filter instead"

Benge Dodeca

Published on Jun 5, 2019 zack dagoba

"Testing out my new Dodeca (Buchla 212) module - its a beauty - Thanks Dom! (and Don)

This is a self-gem patch, but I am tweaking it slightly as it goes along. Everything you are hearing is one take and pure Buchla (261e VCO, MARF Sequencer, Dodeca, 277 Delay Unit)

benges square waves

Published on May 28, 2017 zack dagoba

"six added Buchla 144 square waves, via the 191 filter in bandpass mode. And a thunderstorm. See http://myblogitsfullofstars.blogspot.... for more"

"I finally got the Buchla 144 clones built (thanks Mike & Ross). It was quite a journey from getting the boards made, getting the panel designed (including finding the right font) and manufactured / screen printed, to populating the panel and wiring everything up. Times three. And they look and sound superb..."

monop - Korg Mono/Poly & Buchla 100

Published on Sep 19, 2018 zack dagoba

"Just had the Korg Monopoly fixed up - its sounding SWEET. I love the way the arpeggiator works in polyphonic mode - you can mess with the waveforms and octaves of each of the 4 notes as it goes along, which gets some unique results, sort of half way between an arpeggiator and sequencer in a weird way. The Buchla is doing the percussions, using filtered noise through the 194 bandpass filter and a mixer to change the sound in real time"

100 Noises 03

video upload by zack dagoba

"Here is a patch using the vintage half of my Buchla 100

You are hearing 100% Buchla with nothing else

The patch is trying to mimic a tolling bell, but in a slightly rhythmic way, as the overtones resonate in time with the main clock, being 8th note divisions

The setup uses 2 pairs of sine waves going into 2 Ring Modulators. These are sent to the 102 Stereo Locator, which is used as a VC switch in mono mode and uses an envelope to fade between the ring-modulated tones upon each clock pulse. This sound then goes into the Sharp Cutoff Filter in low pass mode for shaping the sound before going into the Frequency Shifter in the "phaser" mode (ie sending the signal to one half of it, as well as going to one channel of a mixer, then an LFO goes to the other half of the FS, and a clean signal goes to channel 2 of the mixer, and when they are blended correctly, phasing happens in a rather pleasing way)"

multi modulars

Published on Sep 5, 2019 zack dagoba

"Here is a multi-modular patch, whereby I use the Buchla 200 MARF to control the EMS VCS3

This is possible because I modified the VCS3 Jones cable to be able to send and receive CV and gate signals

I’m also using the Roland 100M to add some filter modulation on the VCS3 via the pin matrix

The last bit of the patch is sending some triggered bursts of sound from the output of the VCS3 into the Buchla 200 delay and bandpass filters, which are being modulated by the MARF as well"
