PHOENECIA - ECHELON MALL

Eurorack modular used in Phoenecia's latest release, Echelon Mall. "Although Phoenecia's Echelon Mall is the culmination of 4 years of exhibitions and film work, the project did not begin with their first commission, rather the moment the first revision was requested. Realizing that useful limbs were bound to be severed, and conversely, THAT MUSIC FOR FILM NEEDS TO UNDERGO ADDITIONAL SURGERY TO BECOME GOOD lisTENING MUSIC, the artists tucked the idea of Echelon Mall away for safekeeping, adding bits and pieces as time passed. The sources could hardly be more diverse, one is a soundtrack for the opening ceremony for a fantasy play-land for children created by a group of toy makers, one is a film about Hispanic low-rider bicycle gang members battling one another with witchcraft, another is a starkly futuristic 5.1 installation with visuals interactively generated by the soundtrack itself, and then there's a 2 hour performance where the artists remixed, at random, sounds from 2,500 Christmas records. The result is a surprisingly fluid piece of work that plays like a contiguous, mood-driven soundtrack. Some tracks sit at the near end of biological chaos, some closer to clean & structural reason, nevertheless, each song seems to narrate a different chapter from the same story, never straying too far from the central theme. Echelon Mall is for the most part beat-less, but by no means is it ambient, it nimbly traverses the gaps between electro-acoustic, musique concrète, industrial and noise, all the while rarely reminding the listener that they are listening to electronic music. All of this makes it difficult to categorize, but not difficult to listen to, and though it seems well aware of it's influences, it's just too akward a child to sit comfortably beside any well established genre, camp, or collective. So if we must, we'll just call what it is, an album of visual accompaniments translated into song form: cinema for the ears

ABOUT PHOENECIA
Appropriating their name from the first culture of the old world to explore the new, Phoenecia, aka Joshua Kay and Romulo Del Castillo, was inaugurated in Miami in 1997. The pair previously recorded under the Soul Oddity moniker, releasing an album and a series of 12-inch singles for the US major label Astralwerks. In late 1996 they founded Schematic Music Company which would carve a distinct niche in the landscape of modern music by introducing the likes of Scott Herren (Prefuse73, Savath & Savalas), Otto Von Schirach, Richard Devine, Dino Felipe, Push Button Objects, Nick Forte, and Hearts Of Darknesses (amongst others) to the world. In 2001 they released a full-length album entitled Brownout, which in the words of the late Tim Haslett was "Phoenecia's magnum opus, the place where the ideas found in the preceding records are allowed to come to full fruition". It was also remarked that the album was "cinematic, but primarily in the respect that the tracks are heavily influenced by the sound design of film, as opposed to the score". This marked a decisive break from their past and set the trajectory for the sound they would continue to develop over the next 7 years, which consisted mainly of exhibitions, film soundtracks, remixes, compilation tracks, and the work comprised in their latest albums Echelon Mall and Lewd Archives."

"A few months ago, I created a series of recordings in response to an incredible article highlighting some of the most remarkable properties of the Buchla Oscillators of the 100 and 200 series. The article is Dan Slater's Chaotic Sound Synthesis, published in Computer Music Journal, Summer 1998 Volume 22, Number 2, ISSN 0148-9267."

The following is just an excerpt. See Fastheadace for more.

Vintage 1970's Moog Satellite Synthesizer

via this auction

"genuine made in the USA Moog Satellite Synthesizer. These were made between 1974-79. This one says Moog, Chicago, rather than Thomas Organ as the later ones were labeled. This one has seen a lot of use, but is still in good working condition, all the keys work and all the sliders work and all the flippers work except for Tremelo. The Vibrato does work. The sound is nice and clear."

Sold For: US $399.00

ARP 2600 SYNTHESIZER Modded

via this auction
"One of the finest features of this particular unit (just added), is a STRICTLY INTERNAL, and subtle high quality modification - a cv/gate booster. This has to do with the fact that ARP envelop generators need a heavy gate (12 to 15 volts) plus a simultaneous trigger to fire the full response of the ADSR; most CV/gate devices (such as most synthesizers and numerous other machines) have a lower voltage range, and no trigger signal, therefore are useless to drive the ARP. This mod allows the unit to be used normally with the ARP keyboard, AND/OR to mate with another synth (like a Pro-One, etc) or CV/gate type sequencer. Likely any other (keyboardless) 2600 you will find will require you to hunt down and buy the ARP keyboard exclusively in order to properly work the unit. Due to this modification the combinations are limitless, making this is all that much more fascinating a tool. Please note that this is a purely internal improvement, does not show or make any change to the cosmetics/physicality or performance of the ARP in any way, and may be removed quite easily if desired."

circuit bent alesis qsr rackmount synthesizer

via this auction
circuit bent alesis quadrasynth by spunkytoofers

"this is the first in the series of this release. complete circuit bent interface under open source midi control- switchable from midi control to manual control or both.

1. 4- fiveway rotary switches that circuit bend the onboard quadraverb effects processor. all four rotary switches are freely routed to a 10 point patchbay system and switchable to off, manual control, or under midi control.
2. 4- 12 way rotary switches that circuit bend the qsr's oscillators. all four rotary switches are freely routed to a 24 point patchbay system and switchable to off, manual control, or under midi.
3. overall sample rate controlled by getlofi precision oscillators for stable sample rate control under manual control or midi control..
4. overall sample rate knob for manual control over sample rate.
5. sample rate switches for sample rate control and a seperate switch to turn on/off - midi control/manual control
6. sample rate knob also transmits expression control to external jack#1 located at rear of rack
7. 3 more external jacks transmits expression values defined by midi control commands and can be linked with external gear, cv control for certain devices, and synchable to any spunkytoofers brand instruments that adds expression in (please read manual for further details)
8. midi in jack and midi thru jack added to and from the added midi circuitry. midi circuitry is by highlyliquid. midi is freely programble under sysex messages which is stored internally within the circuitry. this allows any midi controller and sequencer to control the entire bent interface. freely assignable through midi cc control, machine commands, program change and midi notation. please refer to www.highlyliquid.com for firmware manuals for both the mpa kit and the msa-r for further details on how sysex is programmed. sysex programming is easy. you only have to send it a few text characters based on the charts in the highliquid manuals. any daw sequencer or a freeware utility such as midiox will send sysex via midi. if you are unfamiliar i can setup your controls however you like until you get the hang of things on your own.
9. functional lighting provided by highly visible but diffused lighting to provide a informative display that does not cause strain on the eyes. every bend is provided functional lighting to facilite the intuitive layout of the interface.
10. clear interface allows custom bends to be activated quickly with the flexibility of stackable banana jacks without the mess of cables. this fast type of patch setup allows on the fly bend sequencing.
11. all modifications are piggybacked on a 1u rackmount enclosure to allow instrument to be travelled on tour and rackmounted in 2u rack space.
12. internal memory battery replaced with fresh lithium battery and a battery clip mod. batteries were originally ironed directly to the circuit board but the battery clip allows future replacement of battery by anyone very easily. battery should last 10-15 years
13. all mechanical parts and outputs cleaned with superior cleaners and relubricated
14. a manual in pdf or physical copy provided. a seperate bend diagram will be forwarded to buyer and will be uploaded to the site soon. power supply provided. warranty and support for this instrument provided. this auction includes an original physical copy of the manual.
15. support will be offered as well as a limited time warranty"
