Wolfgang Palm - The ppg Story

15 part series here.

via Thomas on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

How it all began:

"I already played in a band back in my school days, and because I couldn’t afford a real guitar, I built one myself. It was built from a finger-board which I got from a broken travelling guitar found in the garbage, a body from flake board, with self-wired pickups.

We played songs from the Beatles, Stones, Spencer Davis Group and what else was heard on the radio in the 60s.
Later, during my studies (physical technology, from atomics through acoustics to electronics), I played the organ. (a Farfisa) Synthesizers were still unknown. At some point in ’70 I heard a song from Emerson Lake & Palmer on the radio and it totally struck me. I believe it was the song “Lucky Man” with that synth solo near the end. One must keep in mind that my ears had never before come to hear such a sound. From that day on I was a complete Emerson fan.
I immediately asked myself what kind of musical instrument this could be and also how such an instrument could function. Particularly the Portamento Effect pointed to the fact that it was an Oscillator which doesn’t have a fixed pitch (like with an organ), but is freely controllable.
Because I knew quite a lot already about transistors and the other components, I built a VCO, like I had in my mind. To control it, I built a Pitch-to-Voltage converter which generated a control voltage from the sounds of the organ and triggered the VCO..."

Roland TR-606 vs. Boss DR-110 | HQ comparison DEMO

YouTube Uploaded by AnalogAudio1 on Aug 14, 2011

"Many people see the Boss DR-110 as a cheap alternative to the Roland TR-606, since both were produced by Roland. But why is the TR-606 much more expensive? Because its name? Or because the sound qualities? Here you can hear the differences face to face.

The TR-606 is easier to programm. Also you can tap in the drum sounds if you want. You have dedicated volume sliders for the drum sounds. Also you have DIN sync for other Roland gear. The TR-606 is overall a bit more professional and was used by many prominent people.

The Boss DR-110 is smaller and less known. It has not only RAM memory - it does also have some patterns in ROM memory. The hand clap sound is one of the best features - which the TR-606 does not have. However, the toms are missing on the DR-110. The basic sound (bassdrum, snare, hihats) of both is different. Which of both would you choose?

In the intro you hear a TR-606 through a Korg Kaoss Pad (the first version)."

"demonstrating basic rudiments on the phone. i'm very uncomfortable the way i'm hunched over the laptop so that the wecam can see it, but it should be clear enough to see how i am using octave rounding when playing fast. these are basic guitar rudiments of the sort you pick up from playing yngwie malmsteen, from technique books, etc; but adjusted for octave rounding fingerings."
