Jovian Synth Bit Beast Synthesizer

Published on Feb 2, 2013 Jovian Synth·1 video

"The Bit Beast is not currently in production. The estimated cost is about $500-$600. Please send us an email if you would like to be notified when more information and availability is known - info@joviansynth.com

For more info visit http://www.joviansynth.com/bit-beast.php

The Bit Beast uses the same chip as an Arduino to generate notes that are then chopped up and filtered by CMOS circuitry. The sound then passes through two analog voltage controlled filters. Both filters are unique designs that offer very different sounds. Filter 1 is a 12db state variable filter with low-pass and band-pass modes and overdrive control. Filter 2 is a 6db filter with low-pass and high-pass modes and a squelchy distorted resonance. The filters can be configured in parallel or two different serial configurations. Both filters have their own LFO and envelope generator."

Update: Specs / Features captured for the archives:

Oscillators
Programmable with Arduino UNO developement board
3 digital squarewave oscillators that play either a chord or the same detuned note (detune amount is controlled with a pot)
Chord selection can be Major or Minor and is controlled with either a swtich or using MIDI CC
Eight step wave shaper for creating custom 8-bit style waveforms
Two sub oscillators (-1 ocatave and -2 octave) each with a dedicated low-pass filter
An oscillator that is +1 octave
Responds to MIDI pitch bend and modulation controls
Vibrato with rate, depth and delay controls
Portamento
Level pots for each oscillator, plus a master oscillator level control

Oscillators
Chord arpeggio that makes it easy to create chiptune chords
Internal clock or MIDI sync
Up or down direction
Separate level pots for each step of the chord
Can be combined with with the steady sound from any of the oscillators

Mattson Mini Modular On the Air

via Craig Padilla on Facebook:

"A couple years ago on the day after Thanksgiving, I recorded a piece of music created entirely on The Mattson Mini Modular Synthesizer with the assistance of master synth creator George C Mattson and his brother Gregg Mattson. The song, 'Black Friday', makes its radio airplay debut tomorrow on Bruce Gall's Sunday Synth program at http://www.arfm.co.uk/ . Check it out; it's a trippy tune."

The show runs 3-6PM Scotland time, so 7AM -10AM PST, 10AM - 1PM EST if you want to catch it.

Matt Traum - "James"

Published on Feb 2, 2013 PatchmanMusic·9 videos

"Matt Traum improvisation on Pat Metheny's classic "James".

I am playing the Steinerphone EWI on this. I thought I would play a little improvised version of Metheny's "James" harmonized ala Michael Brecker. This is a one-pass recording with no overdubs. The harmonizer is an Eventide Eclipse with a custom patch designed by myself being controlled in real time via foot switches.

I am playing what I call a "Hyper-EVI Steinerphone". It's the exact same model Steinerphone EWI Michael Brecker played for many years in the mid to late 1980s with Steps Ahead and on various studio sessions. This model was the first EWI that Brecker played and he took the instrument to amazing heights. This horn was hand made by the great wind controller inventor Nyle Steiner. It is an EWI (woodwind type controller)- but I have modified it internally so it fingers like an EVI (brass type controller). The horn plays incredibly well- it's the Stradivarius of wind controllers. It is hooked up to a companion synth system also designed by Steiner. In this system are two Crumar EVI synth modules and a Steiner "wood and glue" formant filter unit (which is not used in this video). Only one Crumar module is heard in this video fed into the Eventide Eclipse processor.

A little trivia on this system you see in this video: This is the actual synth unit that Doug Norwine played on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson with Melissa Manchester when she performed "La Vie En Rose" (you should be able to watch it on youtube).

"Formanta UDS is powerfull 7 channel analog drum synthesizer, produced by the same FORMANTA factory in Kachkanar city where mades famous Polivoks synths in eighties. It has 5 identical channels (which can be used freely) for BASS DRUM, HIGH TOM, MIDDLE TOM, LOW TOM, SNARE and two channels for Hi-hats and Cymbals. The synth has also built-in beatbox with 16 patterns. The beatbox and the synthesizer are independent modules so they can work at the same time freely. And you can tweak the generators of the beatbox patterns. Full freedom. Each channel has trigger Input on a standart 1/4 mono Jack and two additional Inputs for pedals. It can be triggered from drum pads like Simmons or any audio source - Line Outs of the drum machine or soundcard etc. The synth has two parallel mono Outs (1/4 Jack and 5Din) and two parallel stereo Outs (left-right on 1/4 Jacks and 5Din). It also has 5Din socket for Rhythm-Stick hand controller. This is an armoured antitank piece of gear and the sound it produces is very unique!"

Stereo filters (Doepfer analog modular system)

Published on Feb 2, 2013 GruithuisenCityMan·414 videos

"Hello ! My name is Frederic Gerchambeau. I have made this movie and this music. The music has been made using a Doepfer Modular System.
The patch is very simple : One VCO goes into two VCFs (modulated by two LFOs) that go into two VCAs (for stereo).
Enjoy !"

Modulator Systems MS202 Voltage Attenuator / Foot Controller for Doepfer A100 Demo

"The MS202 is a fabric-covered soft touch voltage attenuating pad which can be patched into any voltage source and destination on the Doepfer A100 and similar analog modular systems and synthesizers. The uses are only limited by your imagination but it can for example vary vibrato or filter modulation depth, allow through white noise in drum sounds, add random modulation to notes, allow extra sequencer notes to be triggered, and much more.

The MS202 can also be hit with drum sticks to vary drum synth sounds - though it only outputs a voltage, not a trigger or gate - and works with even greater range as a foot controller, finding use as a wah-wah, volume controller and much more. You can also cover the MS202 with any flexible surface and use it as a hidden variable voltage source.

Price is £39.00 with £5.00 UK shipping or free collection in London, worldwide shipping costs on request. Payment: cash, UK cheque or postal order, bank transfer. No PayPal."
