Buchla 262v meets NLC 8-bit cipher

Published on Apr 24, 2014 DJjondent·215 videos

Right channel comes in around :17.

"The NonLinearCircuits Cipher is a set of clocked shifted registers.
Very much like a ASR (Analog Shift Register).

The first CV out provides pitch CV for the 262v.
CV outs 2,3,4 modulate harmonic scan & tilt

The operation of a cipher usually depends on a piece of auxiliary information, called a key. It's used a lot in encryption.This aux info is encoded to produce a new rhythm.

The 8-bit requires a clock and 1-2 Aux signals. This can be anything crossing 1V. I'm using CV from Adam's excellent mini 112 retro touch sequencer.(The video doesn't show this, but I'll upload pics to my blog soon).

Siel DK600 + Expander Synthesizer Demo

Published on Apr 24, 2014 sounddoctorin·189 videos

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com demonstrates an assortment of layered sounds from the two 6 voice "DCO" analog units. (Actual 2 analog oscillators each that drive a divide down network to create digital waveforms that are assigned to 6 analog synth channels as needed. An op amp saw converter produces the sawtooth waveform and PWM with comparator as is common. These synths have 3 LFO's but two are for one DCO each and are tied to the same set of controls. Added warmth. Really great pad and clav sounds and some brass."

PhonoPaper Camera Scanning Synth for iOS Now Available and Free

And the best part is it's currently free. What's interesting is it will work using the camera on anything. I thought the app would only read between the horizontal bar lines in the paper images you see to the left, but I just tried it on anything and it worked! You just have to set it to free mode. Great app to trip people out. Would also be interesting to use it to capture a visual what your playing on your modular or other and then feed that audio back in for processing. Or just have it watch TV and feed the audio back into your modular or mix. Should make for some interesting performances. I'm surprised it's is free as I can see it going viral with non synth people picking it up for a buck just to show it to people. Grab it while you can.

iTunes: PhonoPaper - Alexander Zolotov

You might remember the video posted here for the Android version (also available).

"PhonoPaper is:
• format of graphical representation of the sound (music, human voice, etc.); in other words, it is the 2D audio barcode (by analogy with the QR-code);
• real-time PhonoPaper-code reader (using the camera);
• PhonoPaper-code generator (sound to image converter).

Key features:
• PhonoPaper-code is analogue, so it is not so sensitive to different types of the image distortion (bad camera, dark picture, wrinkled paper, etc.); at least you will hear the "silhouette" of the original sound;
• PhonoPaper does not require access to the network; its code is self-contained;
• PhonoPaper-code can be played in real-time with hand-controlled speed and direction;
• PhonoPaper-code can be drawn by hand (paper version of the Virtual ANS synth);
• PhonoPaper is free!

Examples of usage:
• voice messages (or pieces of music) on the billboards, posters, postcards, goods;
• audio labels for phonorecords;
• audio examples in some textbooks;
• art-experiments;
• learning the basics of the spectral music.

PhonoPaper is based on the Virtual ANS engine - it is a software simulator of the unique Russian synthesizer ANS. So if you want to make more complex PhonoPaper-codes - use the Virtual ANS.

Default PhonoPaper-code length is 10 seconds. But you can make it shorted or longer - playing speed can be changed manually.

All great apps.

Siel DK600 tech talk; a tough nut to crack

Published on Apr 24, 2014 sounddoctorin·188 videos

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com gives a tech overview of The Siel DK600 aka Opera 6 aka Kiwi. This synth has some fantastic attributes if you can get one working reliably. I've found some problems besides the common battery spill which just requires a lot of socket/chip changing, trace repair and cleanup usually. The voltage on 5V supply can drift too low and particularly hitting notes hard the s+h cells for key voltage will bleed back onto the power supply through the analog switch 4051's. This creates a phantom lfo strangeness when you hit keys hard. Anyway you may find yourself in a labor of love on these and hopefully this video helps some people. Always check the website for more tech tips, parts etc.

The architecture is somewhat similar to the polymoog except with only 6 voices instead of fully polyphonic in that it uses analog VCO's driving a divide down network. In the Polymoog the frequencies are hard wired of course like an organ but in the siel they are assigned to synth channels by the computer like any polysynth. Watch the demo video showing more of the sounds layered with the Expander module! (A Dk600 with only volume and tune knobs that are analog controls for the vco's)"
