Just the one pic, but I thought it worth a post. Not sure if I've ever posted an image of the technical manual cover before. You'll find a link to digital copies here.

Pollard Syndrum 178 demonstration, electronic drum, analog synth

Published on Jan 12, 2016 Carl Wiedemann

"A demonstration of some of the sound capabilities of the Pollard Syndrum 178 electronic drum module, analog synthesizer. This also presents some of the slider and switch issues with this particular unit. The full array of sounds are accessible, but some of the sliders and switches are a bit glitchy. These were manufactured by Pollard in the late '70s. I'm selling this particular unit on Ebay (January 2016). These units were used by many pop/rock musicians in the early '80s. The Cars drummer David Robinson had two Syndrum Quads and eight Syndrum pads can be seen (along with the self-contained Synare pads) in his drum array in videos of live performances."

"Vintage Pollard Syndrum (circa 1978) analog synthesizer, electronic drum module with original pad and (non-original) 22 volt power supply. The unit is generating the full array of sounds (as compared to the two others that I have). The switch for the snare (noise generator) is a bit ornery and it sometimes takes several tries to turn it on or off. The sustain slider for the noise generator is not adjustable (it generates one short burst). This seems to be an issue with these units (I have another Syndrum with the same slider issue and another that won’t generate sound in the #1 position). The sustain slider seems a bit ornery in the low position and it’s difficult to adjust shorter duration sounds. Also: the tune switch audibly crackles when positions are changed. That being said: it is generating the full array of expected sounds. Given the slider issues it may be best used for sampling and recording rather than live performance. The module can be triggered with most drum pads or other external sound device via a quarter inch audio cable. There is quite a bit of cosmetic distress on the exterior of the module, including spots of rust. Most of the slider caps are missing. I’ve posted a video on YouTube which demonstrates the great array of sounds this unit can generate as well as presenting some of the slider and switch issues."

Star Instruments Synare S3X demonstration, drum module, analog synthesizer

"A demonstration of some of the sound capabilities of the Star Instruments Synare S3X drum module, analog synthesizer. Issued from 1977 to 1982. This unit has five presets, which are moderately adjustable. I assume this was to make it more practical for live performance use. The “0” setting allows full adjustability for making one’s own sounds, although the range is less expansive than the standard Synare 3, which had the drawback of having no presets. The S3X has two AC power inputs to supply 18 volts. However it does work with one twelve volt input (positive tip plug). I'm selling this particular unit on Ebay (January 2016)."

"Star Instruments Synare S3X drum module, analog synthesizer, with clamp mount hardware. Issued from 1977 to 1982. All the controls (knobs and switches) seem to be operating properly. The “0” setting allows full adjustability for making one’s own sounds, although the range is less expansive than the standard Synare 3, which had the drawback of having no presets. I have posted a video on YouTube to demonstrate that this unit in functioning properly. The S3X has two AC power inputs to supply 18 volts. On The inside of Nowhere

"Korg MS-20 - Doepfer Dark Energy - LEAK Oscillator ."

I believe this is the first post to feature the LEAK Oscillator. I'm guessing it's a bit of vintage test equipment. If you know otherwise, feel free to comment.

Update: I asked Sound & Things if he had any more info on the LEAK. He picked it up at a garage type sale. The seller didn't have any additional info on it. Here's what he had to say:

"+matrixsynth Sorry i don't have any more information on the LEAK Oscillator. It was bought at a sort of garage sale and the person who sold it didn't even know what it was. It's definitely old, the oscillator needs to warm up for a while otherwise it goes really mental and it cracks a little when you switch waveforms I think it's DIY test equipment from what I've seen of the inside and because the case looks like a LEAK varislope 2 stereo amplifier...Whatever it was made for or by who, it has a sound that can cut trough solid rock!"

KORG WAVESTATION | The Most Fascinating Soundscapes | HD DEMO

Published on Jan 14, 2016 AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2016 by AnalogAudio1

Demo of the KORG WAVESTATION digital synthesizer from 1990 - The Most Fascinating Soundscapes.

All sounds (including the drums) come from 1 original hardware Korg Wavestation played live, without multitrack recording, without additional effects - right from the stereo outputs of one Wavestation.

The sounds are from the following sources:

0:00 - 3:26 "Film & Textures" (Korg ROM Card)
3:26 - 4:50 "Synth & Time Slice" (Korg Card Set)
4:50 - 5:59 "Vector Athmospheres" (Sound Source ROM Card)
5:59 - 7:00 "Hybrid Synthesis Vol.1" (Sound Source ROM Card)
7:00 - end: Factory Sounds from Korg Wavestation SR

Soundwise, it is a very interesting, inspiring (preset) synth. The sounds can be very complex. Sometimes, there is too much going on in one single sound. Sometimes, you just need to press and hold one key - it already sounds great. You can almost say - the sound programmers are the actual artists, not the synth player...
To create sounds from scratch on the Wavestation, you must go through hell though.

The perfect sound source for you, if you want to make a complete horror movie soundtrack in one day :-) It also sounds very ninetees...

It was used by Jan Hammer in the movie soundtrack from "Knight Rider 2000" - a movie from 1991."
