Modular Synth Live Performance (multi-song) "Eternal" by POB

Published on Apr 4, 2016 Patrick OBrien

"This live modular synth performance is the set I played for 'So Modular Synth Night' at The Whistle Stop in San Diego on March 29, 2016.

I played this set with other experimental modular synthesizer performers Bana Haffar, Ted James Butler, Mike Dobler, and John Noble. Many many thanks to Rodent516 for giving me the opportunity to perform this set live.

The songs in this video:

0:00 "Arp", featuring the Sputnik Modular Multitouch Keyboard/Controller

2:00 "Sailing", featuring the Make Noise telHARMONIC & ALM's Dinky's Taiko

5:40 "Dash", featuring the Make Noise Mysteron & the Audio Damage Kompressor

10:15 "Eternal", featuring the Mutable Instruments Elements & Bastl Instruments GrandPA (with The KLF's "3 a.m. Eternal" sample)

15:45 "Furious", featuring the Noise Engineering Loquelic Iteritas & Mutable Instruments Grids

18:20 "Fuuuuuuu" featuring the The Harvestman's Malgorithm & Intellijel uFold II

-------------------------------

All sounds mixed out through Sputnik Modular’s 6-Channel Stereo Mixer, send to Ableton Live for master file creation for YouTube, SoundCloud, Facebook and Instagram.

I recorded video with an iPhone 6+ then manually synced the video with the audio using iMovie.

All modules were inside a 12U Gemini 0104 case from Monorocket and a 6U case from Dark Modular.

-------------------------------

No computers were used in the performance of this piece. All modular synths, recorded live in a single take."

Superbooth 2016: Arturia MatrixBrute Progress

Published on Apr 4, 2016 sonicstate

"We get a look at the work in progress with engineer Thierry"

The master filter knob reminds me of the Moog Voyager filter knob. You use the spacing knob on it to adjust the the offset between the two filters. The MiniBrute and MicroBrute were one of those synths where either you appreciated the aggressive character of them or you didn't. The new Moog style filter on the MatrixBrute should offer a new smoother/mellow character to work with. Of course the Steiner filter is on board of more aggressive sounds.

Macumbista Butterfly Benjolin analog modular synth

"The Benjolin is a synthesizer designed by Rob Hordijk. It featrues two oscillators, a low pass filter and a random circuit of Rob's own design called a Rungler that outputs voltages, somewhat similar to a sample and hold circuit.

The Macumbista Benjolin is hand-built by Derek Holzer from Rob's circuit design. The Butterfly Benjolin you see here is actually TWO Benjolins together in one box. They are patchable via banana jacks. The cross modulation possibilities are endless.

This one is from 2014. Has the (discontinued) hand-stamped faceplate. Mine also has a mix output that uses the volume controls to blend both of the Benjolins and send out via a single 1/4 output. Very handy for showing up and plugging into an amp. Still has the standard single outs for each Benjolin as well. Comes with 6 banana cables.

I've taken very good care of it. No issues. Being a handmade instrument, it isn't perfect, but that's part of the charm."

"Moog Source with MIDI upgrade (SMK from Encore electronics - $300 value) allowing 256 patch memory. In great shape."

Details on the MIDI mod:

"The SMK gives your Moog Source expanded memory and MIDI capabilities. The memory has been expanded to a total of 256 patches! It can be easily accessed from the front panel or from MIDI. It is configured as 16 banks of 16 patches each. The SMK responds to the MIDI bank select message to access all the patches from MIDI.

The SMK also responds to a variety of MIDI messages. They are: Note On/Off, Patch Select, Pitch Bend, Controller 11 (Filter resonance), NRPN2 (Filter cutoff), Controller 5 (Portamento), All Notes Off, MIDI Clock, MIDI Start/Stop, and System Exclusive messages. The note response is four octaves and the note priority scheme has been modified to next note priority. This allows the player to do high or low note trills. It also does not fold over notes out of the playable range. This allows the Source to follow a bass line on a MIDI channel that may also contain higher note data for another part, allowing easy layering. The pitch bend response is fixed at one octave, but can be set to any interval by changing a pair of resistors. The arpeggiator responds to MIDI clock, and MIDI start and stop commands. It can be set to 3/6/12/24 PPQ for multiplying the arpeggio rate. The 256 patches can now be transferred to another Source or a computer by means of the system exclusive dump facility. The SMK has MIDI In and Out jacks. The Source transmits no MIDI data of its own, except during a sys-ex data transfer."

"Classic Moog 2 VCO Monophonic Analog Synthesizer distributed by Radio Shack under their 'Realistic' brandname.

Has a lot of the build of the Moog Rogue. Monophonic with 2 VCO's and that 24db Moog filter!

Good physical condition.

Moog Basses, Leads, Sound effects!!!

***NOTE*** the built in Polyphonic organ tone does not hold tune. This has been the same for the 8 years or so that I have had it and it never bothered me as my interest was always in the 2 VCO's of course ! A simple re cap of the power supply capacitors is a common restoration step and may well fix the organ tone issue if you wanted to take that route.

When I first bought it I cleaned out the slider pots as there was a known issue with the lining turning to goo and blocking up the sliders. They are mostly a bit crackly due to lack of use, and when I want to have a play I give them a gentle spray with contact cleaner and all good. It would be a simple job for anyone with a little electronic experience to give them another clean out, or through more regular use, they would likely clear up themselves.

It is a shame to let it go, as I have a few old mono's and nothing I have matches the Moog filter.
