Second Day Tests: Make Noise 0-Coast (in 4 Parts)

Published on Jun 29, 2016 Genshi Media Group

"Second Day Tests: Make Noise 0-Coast (in 4 Parts). Sorry the video quality is so crappy in the first 3 parts, the camera was at a weird angle and I had to zoom in with the editing software. Anyway, video notes below...

PART 1: Self Oscillation - Raw and Experimental (with delay added half-way through using the Strymon El Capistan)

PART 2: Duophonically Sequenced with the Korg SQ-1

PART 3: Arpeggiated via MIDI with the KMI QuNexus

PART 4: With Eurorack - Sequencing via Intellijel Metropolis, Processing via Mutable Instruments Clouds"

WMD - Aperture *FIRST PATCH*

Published on Jun 29, 2016 DivKidVideo

"Here's the first patch with the WMD Aperture filter which is STUNNING! I'm so impressed with it. I used it in a delay feedback right after this for a patch example for 'Modular Podcast' too so watch out for that one."

Tom Richard's Mini-Oramics Machine Based on Daphne Orams

Mini-Oramics Medley from Tom Richards on Vimeo.

"Early experiments with Mini-Oramics from composers Ain Bailey, James Bulley and Jo Thomas"

The video above should give you an idea of what it does. In short it reads what is drawn on the transparent sheet and generates audio through hardware. You can see an image of the hardware further below. The implementation reminds me of the ANS.

I spotted this one on the BBC website which has the following to say:

"An electronic sequencer and synthesizer has been built based on designs produced over 40 years ago by electronic music pioneer Daphne Oram.

Daphne Oram who died in 2003, co-founded the BBC Radiophonic workshop and developed a system of creating sounds and compositions using drawings.

The 'Mini Oramics' machine is thought to have remained unfinished in Daphne Oram's own lifetime, but experts argue that its approach to composition and performance would have been influential.

Tom Richards, the researcher who finally constructed the Mini Oramics, told The World At One it helped answer the question "what if this had come to pass in 1973?"

There has been quite a bit posted on Daphne Oram and Oramics here on MATRIXSYNTH over the years, so click through either link to dig deeper. Now would also be a good time to post a reminder on the Kickstarter Campaign to Republish Daphne Oram's "An Individual Note: of Music, Sound and Electronics".

The following images are from John Lely's website, posted on April 8, 2016.

"First full day working with Tom Richards’ Mini-Oramics machine, a device for drawing sound, based on the work of Daphne Oram. Here is a link to Tom’s videos of construction and early trials."

Note the hardware synth engine that is driven by the optical reader.

New Erica Synths Pico VCO Eurorack Module

Erica Synths Pico VCO demo

Published on Jun 29, 2016 Erica Synths

"Erica Pico VCO is deep sounding VCO with 32 selected waves – classical, fattened with sub-oscillator, FM synth and others."

via Erica Synths

"Erica Pico VCO is great, deep sounding VCO with 32 selected waves – classical, fattened with sub-oscillator, FM synth and others.

Typically you need several rather expensive modules to generate similar sounds. Extra feature – flip a switch, and you have a versatile LFO!

Features:

2 banks, each contains 16 waves
VCO/LFO mode
Voltage controlled wavesurfing
Wave morphing in LFO setting
With Pico Series we challenged ourselves – can we make ANY superior functionality synth module 3HP wide and affordable? Yes, we can.

The Teenage Engineering Quartet, Featuring OP-1, PO-12, PO-14, and PO-20

Published on Feb 4, 2016 Aidan Burns-Fulkerson

"Just a little jam session with the hard-hitters from Teenage Engineering. The OP-1 does effects, the PO-14 handles the bass line, the PO-12 supplies the sick beats, and the PO-20 brings the 8-bit melody."

"bC8 contains a stereo headphone amplifier connected to a 24bit / 48KHz digital to analog converter (same unit as used in the bC16). A powerful DSP generates a VCO and LFO (similar to the bC16), also the DSP performs VCF and VCA functions as well controlling the patching of functions to each other and running a simple but powerful ‘ one button’ pattern sequencer. bC8 is controlled by eight rotary knobs and one push-button. Four LED’s indicate battery status, LFO and EG level and other mode elements. bC8 pattern sequencer records the timing/duration of the button presses and all the knob settings for each action, these can be altered live for acid loops etc…

Packed into the bC8's tiny round body is a hand-assembled gold plated circuit board, eight high-quality potentiometers, a stereo jack socket, push-button, no less than four LED's, battery holder (3xAAA cells) with a robust stainless steel base.

Sophisticated digitally based oscillators are housed on the DSP as well as an innovative recording system and internal control voltage patching. Choose between single-shot and repetitive envelope generator modes; use the separate ATTACK and RELEASE knobs to create long and soulful drones; select the recording system to record and playback complex patterns of control knob movement, speed up or slow down the pattern playback to add extra glide detail or confusion, override any of the controls during playback to adapt, complicate or simplify your composition.
