Moog Mother-32 with v2 Firmware Update

Published on May 2, 2020 CatSynth TV

"We demonstrate the basic functionality of the Moog. Mother-32, including its analog VCO, VCF and VCA, as well as its modulation sources and sequencer. We then show how to update the Mother-32 to the new V2 firmware using MIDI sysex. The new firmware has several new sequencer features, including multiple play modes (forward, reverse, ping-ping, and random), as well as additional triplet and dotted subdivisions that are useful when synchronizing with external devices.

0:15 Basic Functionality
1:54 Creating and playing sequences (keyboard mode)
3:56 Updating the firmware
5:12 New sequencer play modes
6:29 Synchronizing with external hardware/software and new clock divisions"

Lay Down Your Shield by No Man's Island

Behind the scenes: creating the synth riff for Lay Down Your Shield

Published on May 2, 2020 No Man's Island
Update: video above added.

"A small secret about Lay Down Your Shield (released on April 28th) is that it was really already started on in December 2018. Songwriting is a long process 😅 The main riff of the song was created by Rune tweaking some sounds on his MFB Dominion 1 synthesizer, and eventually thought to himself 'hey, this sounds rather cool, doesn't it?'."

New track from supporting member, Rune Flobakk.

"We are not primarily a 'synth band' by any means, but the sound relies heavily on synths. On this song I used both an Alesis Andromeda A6 and an Oberheim Matrix-12. The arpeggiator riff in the verses is played on the Andromeda, and I use the Matrix-12 for chords in the refrain and bridge. The song is available on Spotify and most other streaming services"

Ricky Tinez: I'm finally a Tracker user.. // Polyend Tracker thoughts and making a song.

Published on May 2, 2020 Ricky Tinez

"I've tried getting used to the ReNoise workflow for what feels like forever.. I couldn't do it! it was the weirdest DAW to me. But for whatever reason using the Polyend Tracker to make music fully standalone doesn't really feel like a DAW even though thats exactly what it is.. I think its just having my Tracker shortcuts right on the face of the unit vs hidden behind the QWERTY keyboard made all the difference for me."

Yamaha Portasound VSS-200 Digital Voice Sampler keyboard demo - "Auto King"

Published on May 1, 2020 Alfonse

"Yamaha Portasound VSS-200 Digital Voice Sampler keyboard (1988)
The VSS-200 is the big sibling of the smaller but somewhat better-known VSS-30 (as used by Sigur Rós and others). The sampler section has a number of effects, including fuzz, echo, frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, and an ADSR envelope. You can also sample the keyboard's own preset FM sounds internally and apply the effects to them.

All sounds you hear in the track were made using the VSS-200 sampler or its factory sounds and were recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, and reverb were added as required. Individual drum hits were sampled from the VSS-200 and sequenced in the DAW.

Samples used in the track are listed below:
RX11 Snare Hi Tune 5 (layered with VSS200 snare)
RX11 Snare Hi Tune 2 (in the middle section)
Internal voice 05 Bass Clarinet sampled and FM effect added (2)
Internal voice 08 Bowed Bass sampled and Fuzz and AM effect (6) added
Internal voice 97 Wind Bell sampled and FM (3), and Echo (2) effects added
Sampled guitar licks with added Echo (9), FM (1) and Fuzz
Sampled PSS-580 voice 58 (edited)

Buchla Cosmic Drone - Session 15 - Modular Drone Music Performance

Published on May 2, 2020 The Galaxy Electric

"Thanks for listening! Come on a musical voyage with us where we'll send you a new song every day, a cosmic story, and a chance to earn space treasure: https://thegalaxyelectric.lpages.co/5days/

Relax and tune into our live weekly improvised Drone Sessions. This sixteenth session involves a drone featuring two independent Buchla style complex and modulation oscillators starting in tune a couple octaves apart. As the oscillator frequencies drift apart by way of manual control, beating ensues. Listening to droning oscillators can serve as mindfulness sounds as there is no sudden changes in sound. Just smooth drifts in pitch and the resulting beat frequencies. Drones can also serve as an ambient track to have on while doing tasks that require intense focus. Drones are also great for a Sci-fi film soundtrack. The slow yet progressive nature of a drone performance can help one focus on tasks without distraction. The fact that we are manipulating these oscillators live and in collaboration helps the drone meander ever so smoothly in an evolving fashion as we are always reacting to one another's subtle movements. These movements are improvised so there is an unrehearsed and reactive ebb and flow to the tones generated. Engage in the practice deep listening with us.

The electronic music instruments used in this performance of modular drone music are the Buchla Music Easel, and a small system involving a Buchla clone model 259 Programmable Complex Waveform Generator, Buchla 292h Dual Lowpass Gate, and 281h Dual Function Generator in the Buchla LEM Powered 3 Boat.
