Legendary Synth Designer Chris Hugget of EDP, OSC, and Novation has Passed Away

I'm hearing news that Novation's Chris Hugget passed away on Friday. Anyone coming to this site, likely knows he designed the original EDP WASP series of synths, the Oxford Synthesizer Company's OSCar, and more recently, various synths for Novation. Novation has a timeline of his creations here.

"Most people know him as the genius behind Wasp and OSCar, the legendary monosynth from Ultravox's Love's Great Adventure, Stevie Wonder's Skeletons, and Jean-Michel Jarre's Revolutions Overture.

Chris' synths have been used by everybody: Orbital, Ultravox, Tom Yorke, Trent Reznor, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Stevie Wonder, Jean Michel Jarre, Keith Emerson- the list is endless. His heritage synths are sought across the world, and sell for upwards of £5000.

He is a true synth legend. He is also our synth designer. Every Novation synth has been conceived, shaped and refined by his passion and expertise, which spans five decades."

Below are a few videos that pay tribute to his work. You can find additional posts mentioning Chris Hugget here.

The WASP - A Very British Synthesizer

Alex Ball

"The WASP is an iconic British synthesizer designed by Electronic Dream Plant in 1978.

EDP were Adrian Wagner (yes he was a relation), Chris Huggett and Steven Evans. They only traded until around 1982, but that wasn't the end of their synth story. Chris Huggett in particular has had a prolific career in the industry, founding the Oxford Synthesizer Company in 1983 and releasing the (also iconic) OSCar and subsequently (after work with Akai), he joined Novation, who are still trading to this very day.

Back to 1978, the concept of the WASP was to build a powerful, low cost synthesizer. That seemed to have worked as one of the original reviews I found uses the headline "The Synth we can all afford" but still dubs it a professional instrument.

I also found a Moog price list dated June 15th 1978 and it lists the Minimoog as $1,995, the Multimoog as $1,495 and the Micromoog as $895. Assuming they sold for about the same in the UK, the equivalent prices would be approximately £1,090, £820 and £490 respectively. The aforementioned WASP review also states that an Odyssey is still over £1,000 in 1978, so with the WASP priced at £199 this demonstrates what a bargain it was at the time.

In fact, I had a brief conversation with a friend who remembers running out to buy it the moment he heard about it in 1978 and he still has his. It was also the first synth of Dave Stewart and Nick Rhodes among others."

'Not moving on' - Mellow, Melodic Eurorack Performance AJH MiniMod & Gemini

"One of several tracks I'm weighing up for the next 'tomorrow the cure' release on Bandcamp, which will consist of 'live sessions' (as was the previous TTC release), and will be tiltled 'Two Voices'. https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com

This track makes particular use of the Gemini VCF as two seperate filters - the melodic part (an arpeggio from the Keystep in random mode) consists of either the Entropic Doom (alone as a pitched noise VCO, sometimes with a regular VCO mixed into it's audio input, or used as a sync source), or just the standard VCO through the Ring SM (where additional octaves are added). The output of both the Entropic Doom and the Ring SM go to independent filters on the Gemini, Low Pass and Band Pass respectively. Then, the keyboard/sequencer gate from the Keystep triggers the Sample & Hold module, which modulates the mix between the output of these two filters using the Gemini's built-in voltage controlled mixer/cross-fader. I'm also using the CV Mix module to set the modulation level, range, and start/end positions.
The drone sound is two VCOs going through the Wave Swarm to the Ladder Filter, at certain points I manually shift the pitch of one of the VCOs using the Precision Voltages module, via the Glide module (up only).
Recorded into AUM on an iPad with EOS2 reverb.
Added video footage is of the North Norfolk Railway, then the Mid Norfolk Railway, UK (before 'lockdown')."

You can find a demo of one posted here.

"A special version of the Rave-O-Lution 309 with a black finish, special patterns, and two sound expansion boards (Drum X & Synth X)

A lot of the internal patterns sound like direct excerpts from Klaus Schulze's techno albums.

The 309 is pretty much a Roland TR808/909 drum machine with a TB303 built in. It has a sequencer, dozens of drum, percussion and synth sounds to choose from, four audio outputs, two audio input, built-in effects and MIDI.

The bass drum, snare and hi-hat sounds can be chosen from a whole bank of samples and have pitch and decay knobs to help find that perfect tone.

There's a 12-note polyphonic bank of percussion sounds which include a lot of synth and string hits.

The mono lead/bass synth has a variable lowpass filter with resonance so you can tweak to your hearts content.

Effects wise, there's the "Overblast" overdrive knob as well as delay, flanger, reverb and more!"

"Straight outta 1996 Germany!

Has all 3 expansions (see photos)
Audio [MORE OUTPUTS!]
Drum X [MORE CHUNKY BEATS!]
Synth X [MORE FAT BASS AND LEADS!]

The Rave-O-Lution 309 from now long gone German synth company Quasimidi.

It was generally sought after due to having tweakable drums from all the classic drum machines including 808s, 909s, and more!

While originally intended for techno (and it does techno really well!), its sound palette is quite versatile due to having so many tweakable options on the front panel."

"Moog prodigy in lovely condition, was recently serviced by a local technician. Sound is clean, pots and keybed respond as expected.

This unit hasn't been recapped, the original capacitors were tested for leakage and are still in good shape.

The wood sides finish has been starting to flake off but there aren't any deep scratches. I personally like the worn sides as they give the instrument its own character but they can easily be refinished."
