Stop the voices... Do vintage synths sound the same?

video upload by Starsky Carr

"Surely these won't sound the same. After 40 years these 2 Polysixes (is that the plural?) have led different lives. One looks like its been a workhorse - oxidisation on the front panel, a few knocks and bangs.. the other looks like its been looked after a bit better. They've both been serviced, so will they sound anything alike?

"The most expressive and fun to play synth I’ve ever laid hands on, the Yamaha CS60. You know what this is if you’ve come this far. This one is in stellar condition. Was serviced a few years ago and everything is fully functional. Everything feels like new when playing it. I had previously bought a Deckards dream and Hydrasynth thinking it may be a more modern version of this and the keys, ribbon, integration and connection to the sound production and especially the sonic depth and intricacy all were not even close. It’s literally the difference between an LED and a candle. This thing glows and warms."

One of my favorite 80s movie themes
Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F
Beverly Hills Cop theme

I used the Roland JX-3P for the main theme sound, the bass and string pads.
In the original track Faltermeyer used the Roland Jupiter-8, the JX-3P and the Yamaha DX7.
The JX-3p is the best synth in my opinion for classic JP-8 sounds. Nearly identical sound with good programming. I used the Yamaha DX7 II for all digital sounds.
Drums: LinnDrum and Emulator II Samples

The Roland JX-3P Synthesizer from the year 1983 is a fantastic analog synth with the typical 80s sound. Here can you find the full JX-3P playlist with single sound demos and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy.

North Coast Synthesis MIDDLE PATH VCO / all the features demonstrated / no talking

video upload by BRiES

"In this playthrough I let the MIDDLE PATH VCO speak for itself. The way the normalizations are used in this module is very clever and useful. The center section (aka the Middle Path) is a full blown waveshaper circuit that reminds me a lot of a single circuit of the Serge by Random*Source Triple Waveshaper. You can use it with the internal VCOs or just run external sources through them or use any combination of hard or soft sync and create timbres that are very hard to reproduce using any other single module.

I'm VERY impressed with this module (both for its functionality and build quality).

I realized too late that I didn't demonstrate how to make a pure sine in the video. On page 7 and 8 of the extensive user manual you can read all about it, it involves running the saw output into the waveshaper section (instead of the normalized triangle). Then you get 2 quadrature sines (from 'sin' and 'cos' outputs) and a sine with twice the frequency from the 'both' output. I'll add this note to the description of the video.

The manual can be found here:
