TESTING ableton LINK on 12 iPads

Published on Jan 1, 2016 DigiEnsemble Berlin

"We used the following musical apps
* Patterning [iTunes]
* ElasticDrums [iTunes]
* MoDrums [iTunes]
* KORG iKaossilator [iTunes]
* Fugue Machine [iTunes]
and a WIFI-Device.

There are many more apps supporting LINK out now :-)

The new Ableton LINK works very stabile and on time.

This was just a TESTING for many more musical pieces in 2016! We are excited about this new possibilities for mobile music making.

DigiEnsemble Berlin Premiers "Apps on Stage" - Documentary & Thoughts on the Use of iPads Live

Published on Apr 7, 2014 DigiEnsemble Berlin·22 videos

Matthias of DigiEnsemble Berlin sent this in and asked me for my thoughts on the use of iPads as live instruments on stage. You'll find my thoughts further below along with some images of DigiEnsemble Berlin.

Video description: "This short documentary by Andrea Wieczorek and Lukasz Fabijanczyk gives an insight into the musician's preparation for their performance on stage. Of course, technical problems and the quest for the perfect sound play a central role, but also if the musicians themselves can hear properly on stage, as they will play live without playback.

Playing an authentic and dynamic performance turned out to be the most difficult part of performing with apps on stage. Motion and choreography are a crucial part of that. Music apps don't turn into in instrument by a simple "touch" -- motion sensors and an expression pedal, which controls the volume, can create a dynamic sound. And last but not least: The musicians also do not want to come across as a bunch of computer nerds, as well...

'Apps on Stage' shows snippets from the DigiEnsemble Berlin's everyday life on tour to Munich and reveal problems and details that have to be taken into account when making music with Apps on stage. More shows and information about the DigiEnsemble Berlin can be accessed here: http://digiensemble.de

Matthias of DigiEnsemble Berlin asked me: "What do you think, will there be in future more musicians with apps on stage? I think the most complex thing is: How to play on mobile devices in a way that the people love the show as a musical performance – not as a technical gimmick."

My response: As for the iPad as a commonplace viable instrument, I think it is finally reaching that stage with electronic artists, however for more classical performances I believe it will remain a bit of a gimmick for some time. I don't expect it to become any more acceptable than hardware synthesizers in that world. In time it will just be perceived as another form of electronic hardware synthesis. I remember when I first posted the iPad and how excited I was thinking of it as the modern day PPG Realizer. I stated it would revolutionize things as although it is essentially a new computer platform to run software synthesizers, it is closer to a hardware synth than any desktop or laptop computer. Digital hardware synthesizers are simply software synths running on a dedicated hardware. The iPad is no different.

BACH: Aria "Großer Herr" on mobile devices - by DigiEnsemble Berlin featuring Tobias Berndt

Making of: BACH Aria "Großer Herr" on mobile devices - recording session

Published on Dec 29, 2013 DigiEnsemble Berlin·22 videos

"This video is a documentation of the recording process of the aria on 11th of september 2012.

The DigiEnsemble Berlin exclusively uses digital devices to perform the aria "Großer Herr, o starker König" from the famous and glorious Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, sung by Tobias Berndt.

The final version of the aria: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF9h6W...

The entire sound is created on the digital devices themselves. Therefore, three apps run simultaneously. These are "ThumbJam" as a sampler for all instruments, "Geo Synth" as the instrumental surface and "MIDI In Motion" as a motion controller of volume (Schwehn has provides us with a beta version), connected via virtual midi.

-- Background
For two years, the DigiEnsemble Berlin has explored the opportunities of mobile music. This aria, however, is a very important step in the course of the musicians' quest, due to the high qualitative aspiration and requirements of the piece. The DigiEnsemble Berlin physically premiers the piece together with the singer Roman Trekel at the Berlin Cathedral on the 16th December 2012.

The realization of the musically challenging aria is a culmination for the mission of acquiring virtuous playing techniques with smartphones. Matthias Krebs chose this aria consciously with the intention of accomplishing a signifying step in the ensemble's development. Experts like music professors from the Berlin University of the Arts were consulted to optimize the musical adaption and musical interpretation.
Furthermore, the technical level was enhanced by utilizing a number of elaborate controllers. An important sound quality improvement for this musical interpretation was enabled by a new motion control app called "MIDI In Motion" by Florian Schwehn. In the process of the project, the digital devices became serious musical instruments on a high level of proficiency and differentiation that has not been reached before.

TimeShape - Contemporary App Music @Berlin Cathedral 6|6|2013

Published on Dec 4, 2013 DigiEnsemble Berlin·19 videos

Follow-up to Higgs - Contemporary App Music @Berlin Cathedral 6|6|2013

"'Time Shape' by Puya Shoary is a musical composition that can be stylistically categorized as Minimal Music. First it may sound simple: Every musician is following two different rhythmic motifs. However, the different rhythms combined evolve into a complex sound structure. This sound structure is modified with the use of effects by another musician, while the whole piece is floating between eleven loudspeakers spread all around the cathedral's arch.

The DigiEnsemble Berlin used an Ableton Live-Patch controlled by Konkret Performer (iOS).

-- Anniversary Concert at Berlin Cathedral on 6|6|2013
The DigiEnsemble's performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio played on mobile devices only at the Berlin Cathedral in 2012 was a huge success. In celebration of the Berliner Dom's 20 year anniversary, the cathedral's organist Andreas Sieling and the DigiEnsemble paired up and gave their first concert together on June 6, 2013.

For the anniversary show, the musicians composed four pieces. Their intention was to experiment with the sound possibilities of the cathedral's interior architecture. They used 12 loudspeakers, placed all around the cathedral, and created new sounds as "frozen echoes" and "fluid music" (rainshower in the dom).

Mobile Music Making at the Berlin Summer University of the Arts

"App Music: Mobile Music Making
With Matthias Krebs July 29th – August 2nd, 2013

For quite a while now, making music with apps on smartphones and tablets has been more than simply a novelty. Some excellent music apps offer innovative digital musical instruments to the users. Additionally, digital music production has started to change. These apps already allow remarkable musical results, as demonstrated by the first serious album productions (e.g. “The Fall” by Gorillaz) and professional stage performances (e.g. by Jordan Rudess or the DigiEnsemble Berlin).

The summer school seminar will be a composition and sound workshop, in which participants will try out perspectives and potentials of “mobile music.” A range of different sounds and musical compositions will be developed in groups and discussed in a plenary session. Results of the interactive creative activities will be presented in a public performance at the c-base.

Starting with an overview of the different music apps, platforms, devices and interfaces, musical practices will be explored in the creative laboratory.Project groups will develop several performances and productions. The (partial) results will be presented in the workshop by the end of the last day. Additionally, a joint rehearsal with the musicians of the DigiEnsemble Berlin is scheduled. The last two days will be used to prepare the public performance in the c-base.

Central questions are:
• Can you express emotion and meaning with mobile music apps?
What possibilities are offered by mobile sensor controlled devices (such as smartphones and tablets) for music production and for future use as
musical instruments?
• Which musical forms, fields of application and performing practices can be shaped by music apps?

Participants
The workshop addresses interested parties as well as musicians, sound artists and music technologists, who are attracted by making music with digital sensor controlled devices and who are seeking an interactive exchange with others regarding new musical forms. At the same time, the workshop addresses composers and creative individuals (from the field of marketing/media production), who are keen on creating film material and background music for media productions.

Participants may certainly play on their own devices in the workshop, however, additional devices, peripheral equipment and amplifiers will also be provided.

Matthias Krebs is a music educator, physicist and opera singer. For many years now, he has participated in several theater productions as a sound artist and composer. He founded the DigiEnsemble Berlin at the Berlin Career College in 2010. Today, it is the first professional music ensemble, which is regularly performing mobile music on physical stages. Further, Krebs delves into the field of mobile music making in his blog as well as in several music article publications and in his current dissertation.

"We are rehearsing for a concert in Cairo at the German Weeks 2012 (17. - 24. April). We will perform at the opening ceremony with a wide range of music with our smartphones and tablets. This video is just a very short insight into our new jazz piece called "JazzBach".

The DigiEnsemble Berlin an experimental study group that follows a systematic approach playing on mobile devices (esp. iOS). Ten professional musicians got together trying out how to turn handheld devices into musical instruments. It is presenting their musical results on stages. Because of its experimental approach the ensemble plays a wide range of musical styles from classical music ("largo" from Haendel) up to metal music ("word up" in the version from Korn). Every note is played in realtime with a music app on stage. Most of the performances are made and played unique for one show.

"Ombra Mai Fu" made on smartphones - by DigiEnsemble Berlin featuring Anna Gütter

"Uploaded by DigiEnsemble on Jan 30, 2012

Professional musicians try out how to make music using new technologies.
(Informationen auf deutsch unter http://digiensemble.de/ombra)

This video shows a performance of the famous aria "Ombra Mai Fu" in an experimental version accompanied on smartphones and tablets. The musicians´s aim is to try out how to make joint music on smartphones.

The sound you hear is all played live by the musicians and their smartphones. In this case we are playing on the app-instrument "thumbjam" for iPod touch and iPad. [iTunes link] By lifting and lowering the devices tone and volume can be modulated. In this way an expressive play can arise.

However, the DigiEnsemble Berlin plays more than classical music, its musicians experiment with a wide range of genres, play
heavy metal, avantgarde or compose own pieces.

Ostinato for 8 iPods - by DigiEnsemble Berlin & Muse's Starlight

„Ostinato for 8 iPods" - Classical Music with smartphones
- DigiEnsemble: flutes and violins made of smartphones!

The DigiEnsemble Berlin is in uncharted waters. It plays classical music with smartphones. Now, they come out with comprehensive material showing how to make joint music with smartphones and tablet-PCs.

With its own composition „Ostinato for 8 iPods" the DigiEnsemble Berlin releases an own piece of music especially composed for mobile gadget. Oriented to classical music it meets the opportunities of a smartphone that turn it into an instrument.

„Ostinato for 8 iPods" is appropriate to eight players with iPods, iPhones or iPads. With a little practice it sounds like a polyphonic instrumental piece. Commented by words of its composer the sheet music for "Ostinato for 8 iPods" is published for free usage. The piece especially addresses those who have never learned an instrument or only rarely use it. The way it is designed opens the possibilities of making digi-music to everyone - even to beginners.

In its newly produced video the DigiEnsemble gives a foretaste of its prowess. From close camera perspective the art of playing can be seen in detail. The digi-musicians show how they play their instruments individually. Moreover the DigiEnsemble gives answers to questions not only musicians are concerned with: How does it work? What is special about making digi-music? What are digi-instruments good for?

The DigiEnsemble Berlin makes smartphones sound like music instruments. Eight partly classical educated musicians got together trying out how to turn iPods, iPhones and iPads into instruments. Everybody is invited to share this experience and turn school break, coffee klatch or regulars´ table into a smartphone orchestra rehearsal.

How does yours sound?

This music created from a variety of styles between "classic" string orchestra up to the danceable R & B Act. We found that do not fit terms such as orchestra or band for the musical spectrum and describe our formation, therefore, as an ensemble.
