Modular strategies in shaping reflections Part V

Modular strategies in shaping reflections Part V from Roland Kuit on Vimeo.

The software is the Clavia Nord Modular editor.

"Radio lecture 24-02-2016 on the Concertzender:

Electronic Frequencies:

http://www.concertzender.nl/modular-s...

Modular strategies in shaping reflections and space:

An excerpt and simplified version of one of the lectures prepared for the Lindblad Studio, Göteborg, Sweden.

By Roland Kuit.

Electronic Music composers not only create sounds for their compositions.

They create the space where in these sounds are placed, or are even moving as well.

In this lecture the concept of space will be (re-)defined especially for modular synthesis.

Reflections are positional essentials in creating space.

How space can be thought of as an indispensable element of music,

and with the kinds of approaches that emerge when space is dealt with from the start producing a sound work.

As this is a stereo broadcasting, this lecture can not extend more than two channels.

Part of this lecture will be explained by use of very down to earth examples in witch modules and their connections are explained and followed by a more elaborated examples as musical sentences.

Electronic music is not just about pushing a few knobs, it is about creating concepts.

It is recommended to follow and/or download the patch structures for this lecture.

Barber's Pole Pattern by Roland Kuit

Barber's Pole Pattern by Roland Kuit

You can find a tutorial on how to create a Barber's Pole on Roland Kuit's site here.

"A Shepard tone, named after Roger Shepard, is a sound consisting of a superposition of sine waves separated by octaves. When played with the base pitch of the tone moving upward or downward, it is referred to as the Shepard scale. This creates the auditory illusion of a tone that continually ascends or descends in pitch, yet which ultimately seems to get no higher or lower.
It has been described as a "sonic barber's pole". The acoustical illusion can be constructed by creating a series of overlapping ascending or descending scales.***"

Roland Kuit brought us the Roland Kuit's Laboratory of Patching previously posted here.

Update: one more demo & image of the patch:

Roland Kuit's Laboratory of Patching Now Available

First posted here, Roland Kuit's Laboratory of Patching is now available. Click on the E BOOKS link when you get there. Also check out the MASTERCLASSES link for direct one on one training with Roland.

"Laboratory of Patching combines the upgraded and extended interactive eBooks SoundLab I and SoundLab II bundled as one Big Modular Knowledge Lab with over 1700 patches. Equal parts tutorial, demonstration and resource in modular synthesis, sound design and composition."

This is extensive and well written. Roland's previous Roland Kuit SoundLab II - Book with Patches for Nord Modular G2 was well received by the synth community. Whether you are new to modular synthesis or a seasoned veteran you should find plenty of value here. If you are running Windows or an older version of the Mac OS, you can instal the Nord Modular G2 software for free and follow along with the tutorials. For OSX Lion you can run it with WineBottler. I took a look at some of the tutorials and although they are based around the Nord Modular G2 software, the concepts of course can be applied to other synths whether that be modular hardware, or software.

Update: updated the link above. It now goes to Roland Kuit's home page where you can either get the courses via the EBOOKs link or MASTERCLASSES for one on one training.

The Clavia SYNTHA

via roland kuit in this electro-music.com thread on NAMM speculations.

BTW, if you are a manufacturer, synth shop, developer, or other and have something to announce for NAMM, feel free to send it in at any time. Traffic usually spikes during NAMM. Feel free to send things in ahead of time as well. I do not leak what manufacturers send in.

Tenori On sequencing Access Virus TI Snow [v2-1]

YouTube via polishbroadcast. Two more videos. Click here for all.

"All sounds are from the Virus Snow. Trying to have a full drum kit is hard with only 4 parts on the Snow."

Tenori On sequencing Nord Modular G2 [v09]

"All sounds from the Nord Modular G2. Drums are a patch by Roland Kuit on the electro-music.com board. I still can't elegantly drop sounds in and out. I think the sound "volume" is actually being sent as velocity which is why you can cut notes off or catch the tail of some. Can anyone confirm?"

Tenori On sequencing Nord Modular G2 [v08]

YouTube via polishbroadcast
"All sounds from the Nord Modular G2. Drums are a patch by Roland Kuit on the electro-music.com board. This is probably the best virtual analog synth i have tried. It sounds so good. It is a shame they discontinued it. The Tenori-On is starting to open up as a more flexible sequencer as i use it more.

Excuse the quality. This was recorded with my Macbook Pro's iSight and 1/8" audio input."

Tenori On sequencing Access Virus TI Snow [v01]

Stereo version embedded. click here for all of the videos in this set.
"Trying to expand the internal sounds and get beyond that recognizable Tenori On sound and timing. I thought the 4 parts of the TI Snow would be limiting but the sounds can be so big it is a challenge to try and be simple. The Tenori On is in "Advanced" mode so i wasn't locked into score mode for the first 4 layers which was useful on my Nord Modular G2 (which i am also uploading)."

Tenori On sequencing Nord Modular G2 v01

YouTube via polishbroadcast
"Tenori-On sequencing a Nord Modular G2 with a sooper sloppy drum improv. The Nord Modular G2 is making all of the sounds.

The drums on the G2 are from Roland Kuit's awesome patch which i got on electro-music.com.

Excuse the quality. This was recorded with my Macbook Pro's iSight and audio input so the video quality is bad and there is a buzz in the audio. Beyond the buzz, the audio sounds pretty ok."

Tenori On sequencing Access Virus TI Snow v02

"Using some delays and arpeggios in the Virus really helps to get away from the strict grid. Unfortunately, muting sounds isn't all that easy with the layer volume on the Tenori On if you have tails of notes that are ringing out at the end of a measure. All sounds are from the Virus Snow."
