Elektor Formant

"There is a good chance that you have not seen one of these before. They were all hand-built by enthusiasts to the design which was originally published as a series on monthly articles in Elektor magazine in 1977 and 1978. See Rick Jansen's story of how he built one (no, that is not the one offered for sale here) at link.

This is your chance to get your hands dirty and to learn how analog synthesisers work. All the constructional articles, including theory of operation, circuit diagrams, PCB layouts, and even playing techniques were republished by Elektor in a booklet, a copy of which is included with this item. Also included is a demonstration audio cassette.

The Formant was a very modular design. The one offered for sale here has most of the electronics in one unit, and the 49 key keyboard and keyboard interface is in a separate unit (see photos). This is what you get:

3 x VCOs.
1 x 12 dB/octave VCF.
1 x 24 dB/octave VCF.
3 x ADSRs.
1 x LFO module (3 LFOs).
1 x VCA.
1 x noise module.
1 x COM ( Control and Output Module).
1 x keyboard interface.
2 x ring modulators and one keyboard repeat circuit (not Elektor designs).

The Elektor book also includes a design for a Resonance Filter Module, but the Formant offered for sale here does not have a RFM. To some extent, the 12 dB VCF can be used in place of the RFM. Of course, with the information provided in the book, you could build yourself a RFM. Some of the components used in the Formant would be hard to find now, but there is no problem like that for the ICs used in the RFM.

Some extra inputs have been added to the VCA for the ring modulators. Another added VCA input, together with a switch added to the 12dB VCF, allows the two VCFs to be used either in parallel or in series."

MOOG Memorymoog

This LAMM (Lin Advanced Memory Moog) was imported from Germany by me in 2003. Current street prices for non-LAMM Memorymoogs is around the £3000 mark in the UK. A non-LAMM Memorymoog Plus, described as mint condition, sold on eBay 18 months ago for over $9,000 US dollars.

But this is a LAMM, and there is no comparison between stock Memorymoogs and a LAMM. For details on what Rudi does to his Memorymoogs see below, but for starters how about a completely new re-written and stable OS with a FULL MIDI implementation?

"The Pro/DGX is a thirty preset monophonic analog synth based on the Pro-Soloist of the 1970's. The main difference is that the Pro/DGX had electronic switching (touch buttons) between its preset sounds whereas the older Pro-Soloist had circuit-based switching (rocker switches). It has 30 preset sounds to choose from, including Flute, Bassoon, Brass, Fuzz Guitar etc. Other features included pitch, portamento, vibrato, growl and wow effects. The keyboard has 37 keys with aftertouch sensitivity for volume, brilliance, vibrato, wow, growl, and even bend effects..." Modulus Electronics Monowave

"The Monowave was the brainchild of UK electronics designer, Paul Maddox. Paul has been designing and building synths for years as well as releasing his own unique music realised on his impressive modular creations. Paul wanted to build a synth the roots of which lay in the PPG. Originally intended as a monophonic bass synth, the Monowave has uses beyond that. The Monowave is a wavetable synthesiser with 256 waves available for each of the two oscillators. Each oscillator also has a sub-oscillator. The filter is a copy of the Moog filter, there are separate envelope generators for the filter and amplifier, and a simple LFO. The panel is very 'retro' and 'traditional' with knobs for every function and a simple display. Internally, the circuitry is all analogue (except for the digital circuitry used in the oscillators)... no wimpy DSP thank you very much - this is a 'real' synth!!

Paul has now released the MonoWave as GPL and has given me permission to release the PCB and a Component Kit for those that unfortunately missed the first, limited run. I have decided to upgrade the main microcontroller to the newer ATMEGA32 which will allow developers to further extend the capabilitites of the design should they wish."

Oberheim Eight Voice System

"This is not a single synthesizer, it is eight mono synths under the control of one keyboard. The keyboard can be split into 2+6, 4+4, or 6+2 voice combinations. You just can’t buy something like this anymore, at any price. It deserves to be brought back to life. Complete schematics and manuals (copies) are included. Synthesizers of this era are not full of custom IC’s, but stacks (and stacks) of good old fashioned circuit boards filled with off the shelf diodes and resistors. Please don’t cannibalize something this majestic and rare for parts. This Keyboard cost $10,200.00 new. A new Corvette of the same era was about $7500.00. Only the elite could afford such a monster. This particular Obie has a pedigree of its own, which will be made known to the buyer, but due to lack of documentation is not part of the listing."
