Roland D50 with DODEKA Keys

Published on Jul 24, 2016 DODEKA

Note the Roland D50 is not featured in the video above. The video is just to give you an idea of what DODEKA is. In short:

"DODEKA is a revolutionary music system that simplifies playing and composing music. With this new system, you'll be able to quickly and easily learn how to compose and play great music."

via http://www.dodeka.info

"DODEKA introduces a revolutionary keyboard, the DODEKA keyboard, based on a chromatic configuration, where all keys are set at the same level.

As mentioned earlier, instruments with a keyboard such as the organ, the piano, etc., have a structure that unfortunately replicates the traditional notational method.

The DODEKA system works with every instrument. However, the design of the standard keyboard by contrast to strings and brass instruments greatly handicaps musicians, since it reproduces the “defects” of the traditional notational system as seen earlier.

Only a keyboard that replicates the real form of music allows to fully benefiting from the coherence of DODEKA and encourages musical expression. That is why DODEKA introduces a new keyboard, the DODEKA keyboard, in which all keys are set on chromatic configuration.

The Advantages of the DODEKA Keyboard

In a chromatic disposition, each note of the scale is side by side, there is no more established and penalising construction. Each interval is equivalent which allows the musician to very easily control the “musical space” because the keyboard perfectly replicates what is happening in the sound universe.

This configuration provides an incalculable benefit for those who improvise, as it enables to avoid the long-out calculations imposed by the traditional keyboard."

RoliGlideDemo

Published on May 16, 2016 Steve Bryson

"A demonstration of how adding a little glide to control voltages from the Roli Seaboard Rise can make controlling a modular synth a little easier. The patch is a simple square wave, with strike controlling volume, press controlling a high-pass filter cutoff (stereo right) and slide controlling a low-pass filter cutoff (stereo left). The Rise MIDI signals are converted into control voltages by an Encore Expressionist.

The video is in two sections: the first is with the raw CVs from the Rise/expressionist. The discontinuities in the control are bothersome to me. They come from the strike being very sensitive, and the slide changing the filter setting unless I hit notes at exactly the same place on the keys (which is not realistic). The second section adds a little glide through a glide (AKA slew) module to the strike, press and slide CVs. This smooths out the discontinuities, making it easier to get smooth control."

Roli Seaboard Rise 49 controlling a Modular Synth

Published on May 9, 2016 Steve Bryson

"Here's a simple voice patch with a square wave split through two filters, one a resonant low-pass filter, and the other a resonant high-pass filter. I'm using 4 dimensions of the rise: glide (pitch bend) controlling pitch, strike (velocity) controlling volume by modulating the volume envelope level, slide (position up and down the key) modulating the low-pass filter cutoff and press (aftertouch) modulating the high-pass filter cutoff. Not really intended to be music, just a demo that makes the action of the 4 dimensions obvious. Definitely not my new hero Marco Parisi."

Seaboard RISE and Haken Continuum-II

Published on Nov 29, 2015 Christophe Duquesne

"This is another small video combining the SEABOARD RISE, from ROLI, and the Haken Continuum, each running its own sound engine (EQUATOR on a Mac for RISE, and Eagan Matrix internal sound engine for the Continuum).

It's just one take, and directly recorded out of the mixer (no editing, so the mix is not perfect and there are a few pitch issues ....). The only addition is a reververb from Valhalla DSP run on a Tiptop Audio Z-DSP.

The VlnVlaCellBass sound of the Continuum (amazing preset from Ed Eagan) is physical modeling based.
The Legato Orchestra on the RISE (probably from Rafael Szaban), from the official ROLI preset bank (with a few local tweaking from me), is sample based.

I'm not trying to replace any instrument here: just playing something I had never been able to play on a keyboard !"
