The Surprising Musicality of a Telephone Line Simulator

video upload by HAINBACH

You can find the post HAINBACH mentions with pics here.

"Of all the instruments in my studio filled with many obscure things, this is the one that draws most peoples attention: the vintage telephone line simulator by Axel Electronics. It looks rather disco for a piece of test equipment, with its Battlestar Galactica golden color. In this video I put it through its many surprising musical applications.

"Axel Electronics Telephone Line Simulator Model 771
'The 770A Telephone Line Simulator can simulate the worst case amplitude and envelope delay characteristics of transmission lines and can generate a number of random transmission line effects which are especially important to digital date transmission. These are Pulse Jitter, Phase Hit, Amplitude Drop-Out, Amplitude Hit, Frequency Shift, Nonlinear Distortion, Random Noise and Impact Noise. The amplitude, frequency and timing of these impairments can be introduced and controlled by an operator individually or in any combination.'"
