Hollow Sun TriOSC Now Available

"TriOsc is styled on equipment retrieved from an ancient, disused rocket launch control centre and features three oscillators with samples of valve sine and triangle waveforms taken from a rack of vintage test equipment to create dense clusters of retro sci-fi electronica.

Unique to TriOsc is the 'SERENDIPITY' button (labeled '?'). You see, TriOsc has a mind and being of its own. Clicking this button generates new patches and sounds randomly created by TriOsc that instantly evoke the spirit and electronic tonalities of the early Radiophonic Workshop, 'Forbidden Planet' and other classic sci-fi movies, Morton Subotnick, Tristram Cary and other early electronic music pioneers working with primitive equipment - an astonishing source of inspiration which can lead you down different roads of musical ideas and exploration. The randomly generated sounds can then be tweaked and shaped to your own particular needs using the comprehensive panel. They can even be saved as normal NKIs for future use.

TriOsc is available now and costs $8
http://www.hollowsun.com/HS2/sli/triosc/index.htm

Requires Kontakt 4.2.2 or higher. It will work with the free Kontakt Player but only in 'demo' mode and the session will be time limited."

ROUGH AND READY DEMO

The quick audio demo above is not from the Krell's music library archive but was recorded in one take, no overdubs or trickery, just clicking on the SERENDIPITY button.

Available at the end of this week.

Price - $TBA" via KVR http://hollowsun.com/

This one in via Atomic Shadow who had the following to say: "I just spent the evening with an advanced copy and it is brilliant. This one is called TriOsc. As you might expect it uses three oscillators (sampled from my vintage test equipment). It has a good effects section and the oscillators can be modulated in various ways.

Here is a link to the demo I recorded earlier. It's called Misson To Kolchab. 100% TriOsc"

And a little on Steve Hollow: "He was the main sound designer at Akai since the S950. If you do a bit of Googling you can find his name on the credits to The Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack. Oh yes, he did sound design for Peter Gabriel."

Hollow Sun OSCILLOSINE and ORGANA Now Available!

via Atomic Shadow, who's HP oscillators are featured in OSCILLOSINE (see Hollowsun label below for prior posts including video) via the Hollow Sun newsletter: "OSCILLOSINE and ORGANA now available....

Well... they are!!

There has been considerable excitement in the blogosphere about these two intriguing looking Kontakt instruments ... and not without good reason as they represent a new direction in Kontakt soundware and a new direction for HS products.

Best of all, however, is the price ... a mere $8 for 'Oscillosine'!!! That's about £5 in real money and €5.70 for my friends across the channel in Europeland (roughly ... depending on exchange rates obviously).

'Organa' will sell for just $4! You do the maths!

Hollow Sun Oscillosine ... rough demo

YouTube Uploaded by nuswolloh on Mar 16, 2011

"This is a rough run through of the presets in Hollow Sun's new 'Oscillosine' retro tube synthesiser for Kontakt 4 and part of the 'Music Laboratory Machines' series. Basically, it's just me going through the presets of this weird and wonderfully eccentric noise making device.

HP Oscillators Used for Hollow Sun's Oscillosine

HP oscillators used in Hollow Sun's new Oscillosine, first posted here.

Pic via Atomic Shadow, posted in The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge Photos.

"I am recording a series of pieces using this equipment for the next Atomic Shadow project."

Update: on the oscillators:
"For the upcoming Oscillosine, from Hollow Sun, two Hewlett Packard oscillators were mutli-sampled at mini thirds for their across their audible range. The 200ABR model provided continuous tones. The 201CR model was malfunctioning at the time and was beeping so that was sampled at minor thirds as well. These sounds were used to create the two demos that are live on the Oscillosine site. Full Moon 3 will probably be on the next Atomic Shadow collection.

The smaller generator in the photo is B&K 301B Sine/Square transistor oscillator. The square waves were also sampled and may feature on a future Hollow Sun Kontakt instrument."

Update: one more pic here

Hollow Sun Hohner Organa and Oscillosine Product Pages Now Live

The product page for Oscillosine, first posted here, is now live. You'll find an additional sample and more info. Regarding the image immediately to the left: "The samples for Oscillosine are taken from a vintage tube Hewlett Packard sine wave test oscillator estimated to date back to the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier."

On Organa:
"Little is known about the Hohner Organa other than it was an electric reed organ from the 50s/early 60s with a fan that blew air through reeds that were opened and closed with the keys. In many ways, it's like an electric harmonium where a motor rather than manually pumped pedals pushes the air around.

It has a distinctive sound which is harmonically rich and somewhat 'wheezy'. It certainly has 'character'. It is only capable of a few basic tones but Hollow Sun's 'Organa' takes this a stage further by making them available simultaneously and mixable using drawbars which allow a far greater range of sounds to be created than the original is capable of. The phase innacuracies of the layers add to the overall richness of the sound when the various 'ranks' are combined."

Organa is available on the Hollow Sun website here.

Oscillosine - Coming soon from Hollow Sun - Vintage HP Oscillator

"Almost as though it was found in the back of a damp garage after decades of neglect, Hollowsun has created Oscillosine. Reminiscent of an oddball inventor's strange homebrew creation, Oscillosine is designed to conjour the sights, sounds and smells of a 1940s experimenter's laboratory... glowing valves, otherworldly audio and maybe a hint of pipe tobacco.

The samples for Oscillosine are taken from a vintage tube Hewlett Packard sine wave test oscillator estimated to date back to the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier.

The more voices (or notes) the thing tries to play, the circuitry seems to strain slightly and the valves glow brighter which is visible through the front panel aperture.

Oscillosine offers serious abstract synthesis for the adventurous to bring something different to your productions whilst also providing more conventional sounds for more mainstream work.

For safety reasons, be sure to wear a white lab coat when operating Oscillosine."

The Bit-52's The World's Greatest Parts Band playing The B-52's - Rock Lobster

YouTube via bd594 | September 07, 2010

From the man who brought us Bohemian Rhapsody and Funkytown.
"What do you get when you combine retro computer parts and an up and coming robot band?

The Bit-52's

This is dedicated to all fans of The B-52's who are also known as the "Worlds Greatest Party Band". It just so happens they currently on tour so go out and buy some tickets. This idea has been simmering in my mind for the last couple of years and after many months of procrastinating it is finally complete. I was also motivated to finish my robot band after seeing a YouTube Video from "The Trons" from New Zealand.

The Bit-52's consist of:

Fred's Vocals - TI99/4a computer, speech synthesizer and terminal emulator ii module
Kate and Cindy's Vocals - Two HP Scanjet 3C scanners, UBunto and sjetplay written by GanjaTron
The Guitar, Keyboard, Cow Bell, Cymbal and Tambourine are all controlled by various types of push/pull solenoinds for a total of 23. The Solenoids are powered by four ULN2803 darlington drivers and everything is controlled by two PIC16F84A microcontrollers."
