"My uCVC module has arrived from Evaton Tech. It's a CV converter that takes the USB output of the Hakken Audio Continuumini (little sibling to the Hakken Continuum keyboard) and breaks it into usable CV outputs.

I got it specifically to use with the Ondes VCO, because the original Ondes Martenot after which the Ondes VCO is modelled used a...well what to me appears to be a ring on a string. So a continuous pitch movement rather than quantized by keys. I already had the Continuumini, so figured it should be a perfect match.

This is me running through the various voices on the Ondes VCO and different pitch ranges on the Continuumini to see what we get.

"This is a first look at the Ondes VCO. It just arrived, and I'm so pleasantly surprised by the sound that I figured I'd put a quick video up so others can hear it as well.

It's not a 'standard' VCO. Based on the Ondes Martenot, each of its voices are, on the one hand, traditional (sine, square, triangle), and on the other specifically treated to give a sound that's unique. And because it allows for onboard mixing of waves, all sorts of variety is possible.

I'll dig in deeper later, but for now, have a listen to some of the very particular voices that come out of this module.

Haken Continuum / EaganMatrix: Continuum + Bitbox + EaganMatrix Module = "Aleatoric Music 1010"

"Here's a fun combination to create a simple Aleatoric Performance that will be different every time you create it. I sampled 16 different Haken Continuum preset performances of different lengths into a 1010 Music bitbox, some of which are custom built on random elements (like the drone that runs throughout in slot 1). Then I randomly triggered them starting with the drone that sets the overall time of the piece (ca. 4 minutes). The output of the Bitbox is sent into an EaganMatrix module for Master Section reverb processing (Modulated Delay) and also dynamic stereo tapped delay processing that uses an oscillating tap percentage on each channel at two different rates and amounts to create a shimmering pitch shifting effect on the output. Everything is Haken Continuum manipulated sounds. Of course, I could sample in a totally different set of things next time and create this kind of music easily all day long."

"I thought I'd try to create a preset that allows you to set a specific set of pitches for each of four oscillators and then using S&H randomly play those pitches in four part "harmony". Then add a bunch of controls to change the dynamic pad output if you like. Before the Note Graph function added to 9.95 and later releases this would be impossible, but now you can do some really nice generative things with configurable pitch sets.
No talking here - just using balloons to briefly explain the process for those who want to try doing something similar."

Continuum voice on the Onde

"Short demonstration of a user defined audio analysis played from a Continuum on an Onde from La Voix du Luthier (audio recording: you can hear the friction noise on the Continuum surface ;-) ).

The original audio sample that was analyzed was kindly provided by Deep Forest (can you guess what song it is coming from ?). It was analyzed with the tools we are currently working on at Haken Audio (demonstrated at last Superbooth) and played realtime as an additive set by the Eagan Matrix (synth engine of the Continuum, also shared with Expressive-E Osmose). Only a very small part of the analysis is used here.

Haken Audio - EaganMatrix Module - Testing Processor Presets

"The HakenAudio Eurorack EaganMatrix module is not only a CV and MPE midi controlled physical modelling synth (supporting many other sound generation models) but also can function as a DSP audio processor. The Module comes with a number of Audio Processing presets in the 'Processor' category that you send Audio to through the L/R Audio input ports. These range from reverb and delays to Karplus Strong and FeedBack Network Delay processing options (many more options will likely be available in future releases and you can easily create your own in the EaganMatrix (certainly a heck of a lot easier than writing your own DSP processing code).

I thought I'd test them all using a filtered, envelope generator shaped noise pulse (which is ideal for some of the Karplus and Delay network examples). Some of them don't do much on a short noise pulse so at the end I run them on constant filtered noise as well.

No talking on this one. Just stepping through the presets sending the noise pulses and then playing with some of the Macro Controls that change various parameters of them in real time - which you can do from the module with the Rotary or through the Haken Editor or using a Midi Controller. But this test is all CV and Audio controlled."

"So I had a play with my new Eaganmatrix module by Haken Audio last night and here is the result. This is recorded live with no overdubs. The Eaganmatrix module is being sequenced by one of my Turing Machine sequencers. There is a 2nd sound source which is one of my Rings modules which is providing the cow bell/drum sound...otherwise everything else is the Eaganmatrix. I'm also running the entire mix through my Starlab module for some echo and slight verb.

I must say that the Eaganmatrix is the BEST Eurorack module that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. This thing IS a beast and has a world of sound/energy/music in it just waiting to be recorded!!!

I love the Haken Audio products. The Eaganmatrix module is my 3rd product from them. I also own a half size Continuum, as well as a ContinuuMini. Amazing products that go where no instrument has gone before!"

"The EaganMatrix is a eurorack module with a remarkable built-in synth engine that's also featured in the Haken Slim Continuum and ContinuuMini. It has four CV inputs that control 'note on' (W), pitch (X), expression (Y) and pressure (Z). It has over 500 patches on board which offer amazing sonic renders of strings, plucks, pads, choirs, physical models and a wide array of effects that are just made for feedback. In the Eurorack universe it's a mono experience, but the EaganMatrix serves eight voice polyphony. So notes aren't just cut off, they have their own independent envelopes. There are four 'bespoke' control inputs (I, II, III and IV) which offer tailor-made control over a patch. Their function depends on that patch, e.g. a custom control can affect reverb, feedback, filtering, or all at once through functions. The eight voice polyphonic engine can be 'read' by the EaganMatrix Editor (a Max application) and allows you to create your own patches and save them to the module. It's not a VST, the EaganMatrix can run without a PC or Mac. However, when you patch it up with an MPE midi controller (e.g. the Linnstrument, Sensel Morph or Seaboard RISE) the module turns into a full blown Continuum synth with eight voice polyphony. The module is not exactly a bargain, but it offers you a breathtaking sonic journey that could keep you occupied for decades."

The "busking" Onde set (Onde _ Continuumini) is used by Christophe Duquesne and allows a total freedom (the Onde is battery powered and also powers the ContinuuMini).
Edmund Eagan is using a Continuum Slim 70 and a Eurorack set including the Eagan Matrix module, connected to the new single body Pyramid from La Voix du luthier.
The recording was done on an iPhone and kindly shared by Antonio Machado (the audio is also from the iPhone and a bit noisy due the the environment, but also preserve the acoustic side of the performance)
The concert was mostly improvised. This is a 16 minute except of a 45 minutes performance."

Haken Audio - EaganMatrix Module Demo - "Choir and Ext" Preset

"A short demo of the new "Choir and Ext" EaganMAtrix module preset - here using two EaganMatrix modules (though that second module could be any complex VCO or sound generator that creates a waveform that suits the BiqBank formant generator that is the basis of this preset). Basically this is the Choir preset that has been around for a while that takes an external audio input (here EaganMatrix Module Stereo Audio input) and crossfades that with the Sawtooth Wavebank that defaults to driving the formant generator. Macro Controllers are used to both control the formant type and also bring in the crossfade of the Audio input (from None to 100% Input control). SO you can get some very nice effects in the module of that crossfade when both controls are actively driving the formant generator."
