Jennings Univox - 50's Valve monophonic 'synthesizer'
via this auction
"This instrument was pretty much the first electronic venture for Tom Jennings who later went on to create Vox amplifiers AC15, AC30 etc. The Univox was used by the Beatles during their early Cavern days in Liverpool and can be heard on Telstar by the Tornados.
It's all valve, featuring a quartet of 12X7's for tone generation. Reed switches apply 'additive' filters, and octave effects. Separate power amp and speaker are housed in the case & amplification is via a 6L6. The keyboard packs away into the amplifier case, and the whole lot is portable as a single unit.
This example includes the rather hard to find knee volume lever.
It's in full working order with the exception of the vibrato which I just cannot fathom! Shouldn't pose a particular problem for a proper technician.
Don't expect it to play in tune, and be prepared for warm-up wailing!
The instrument is over 60 years old and is in pretty good cosmetic condition considering.
There's a lot of information about the Jennings Univox on with web, for example:

Vox Jennings Univox

Googlish description:
"Probably one of the first monophonic synth history.
Built by Jennings, who founded the company after Vox in England.
It's 1956!
As you can see is a box lined with leather Crocodile Tolex.
The keyboard is the preamp tubes and the box is the stage and an 8-inch speaker. Has an output of 6 watts.
Is connected to the amplifier box.
With the lever control the volume.
It works great unless the vibrato effect.

Three octaves of Fa Fa, with small wooden keys.
The Univox became very popular in 1962 when Joe Meek used it for his hit Telstar Tornados.
A museum piece and playing in the p. mother!
Change it for some interesting instrument, or study material.
It also offers reasonable economic accepted."

Jennings Univox / Clavioline
"rare Jennings Univox. This is a similar synth to a Gibson Clavioline. I've owned the unit for a few years now and done a lot of work to it. The synth works well ... all the tubes work, all the keys work, and the buttons work as well. The tuning is stable ... you need to tune it every few hours or so. The action on the keyboard is a little rough, its an antique and plays like one. The cabinet has been retolexed with the green alligator-ish tolex. Underneath is the original brown tolex on the inside ... on the outside it seems to be there as well. This could be a great restoration project, or a really cool unique mono synth for your collection. This is the only

Vintage Jennings Univox Valve Tube Keyboard Synth & Amp
"Magnificent & super rare Univox / Jennings Valve Synthesisor & amplifier - in an alligator skin case!!!! Well... faux alligator. These synths were one of the first ever to be built & were made along the lines of the Selmer Clavioline (which I think was used on the 60`s single Telstar) - superb tones can be had from gut breaking bass to eerie high tremolo starsounds - so great for both rhythm & lead work if origional organic tone is your thing. This baby comes in all origional condition with all the leads & the volume lever which you move to raise or lower the volume."

Vox | Continental / Jaguar / Corinthian / 300 / Jennings J70
YouTube via serenities. via kidtesla.
"Finally a free day (Queensday) and some time too make a (very) short impression about the differences of sound in the Vox organ family.
Unfortunately the Super Continental couldn't be part of the video, it's still on the working table.
Ofcourse there is so much to show / hear in the differences, the effects, the individual drawbar changes, the presets, percussions, vibrato, reverb, bass, sustain etc. But this is to much to put in a video of max. 10 min.
I might do some documentary thing in the future that will contain much more information. In meanwhile, enjoy these sounds!" Combo Organ
