L-1 DP VCF plays some melodies.

"L-1 DP VCF from the L-1 Filters Collection.
It's four pole VC filter. Filter's poles give LP outputs 6, 12, 18, 24 dB/oct.
Then mixing these LP outputs it makes 20 different filter types.
Comparing to other filters of the Collection:
This one is the fattest and slowest. As I feel that, it sounds old school.

L-1 DM VCF plays some melodies.

"L-1 DM VCF from the L-1 Filters Collection.
It's state-variable filter with double cells. It gives 24dB/oct filtration.
Comparing to other filters of the Collection:
This one is most 'ideal' working.
It gives stable equal loudness selfoscillation in full frequency range.
It has thinnest resonance spike, so the resonance sounds not so 'bold' as others.
It sounds sharp and clean. If you want fat and dirty - this is not that one.
It adds less overtones and harmonics to the sound comparing to other filters of the Collection.
Someone can say it's too cilinic and dry, but often this is exactly what is needed."

L-1 Filters. First impressions. 24dB LP mode.

"L-1 filters collection.

First impression on new L-1 filters. Now only 24dB LP mode, single saw wave input.

All filters are built from identical blocks but with different architectures (topologies). Building blocks are: L-1 original Discrete Blacksea gain cells (VCAs), and silver-mica capacitors (best capacitors for filters).

Filters:
DD VCF - Discrete Dual. Two 12dB State-Variable filters in series give 24dB/oct filtration.
DM VCF - Discrete Mulimode. Using double gain cells in State-Variable topology it gives 24dB/oct filtration.
DP VCF - Discrete Pole. Four poles filter gives 6, 12, 18, 24 dB LP outputs. Mixing the outputs it gives BP, HP, N (notch), DN (double notch) filtration.
DS VCF - Discrete Sallen-Key. Switching system (12 electronic switches used) switches between LP, BP and HP topologies.

L-1 Synthesizer plays 'Mysterious Galaxy'. Re-work.

"L-1 Synthesizer plays 'Mysterious Galaxy'.

Recorded live 'as is' into stereo track. No additional processing.

This video I made mostly as a demo for L-1 Triple Discrete Midside/Stereo Equalizer/Resonator, L-1 Discrete Midside Microcopressor, L-1 Stereo Clipper.
This Combo: Midside Compressor - Midside EQ - Clipper, provides full control over dynamic, frequencies and loudness - separate for middle and sides. I used it at the master output of the whole mix, and at every instrument I played and sampled.
If I had more expirience in making tracks and better studio, I would record better.

I had only two cases, limited quantity of the modules and cables. So I preliminary sampled instruments. Only the bass synth and the Vocoder go live from the modules. Others - from samples.

Drums - 909 kit from Ableton.
Chord instruments - acoustic piano in the break, and background organ were sampled from Korg TR.
Other instruments were sampled from the modules.

Samples played from Ableton. Then mixed in the Stereo Mixer, then to the Midside Compressor, then to the Midside EQ, then to the Clipper, then to record in Soundforge.

L-1 Discrete 16-channel Vocoder. Distorted waves.

"The module is 28HP. 3 stacked boards deep. Control board, odd channels filterbank board, even channels filterbank board.

I used my Discrete Blacksea VCAs everywhere - in channels, input compressor, output mixers. So 23 VCAs total. Microphone preamp is THAT1512 based.

Modulator has two inputs. First from a microphone with Gain knob. Second for other sources with level attenuator knob. There is an output after mic preamp to send a voice to external processing then return into MOD input.

Then modulator signal goes to compressor. Attack, release and ratio setting are fixed. Threshold sets with a knob.

After the compressor it goes to 16-channel filterbank.

Carrier has two inputs with attenuator knobs. Also it has Gain knob which can add up to x6 gain to both inputs together. It's for using quiet line level signals.

LEDs show when compression applied, when modulator and carrier inputs overloaded, when Noise Gate closed and open.

Filterbank has separate outputs for odd and even channels. Filterbank VCAs have semi-exponential response. This easy to trim but I think semi-expo is ok. Every filterbank channel has level trimpot. Normally trimming is not needed. But if someone wants to make some channels quieter or louder - it's possible.

Two switches set normal or alternate order for odd and even channels. Normal order when 1st madulator channel drives 1st carrier channel, 2nd-2nd, etc. Alternate order sets with jumpers at the board. Every channel at the board has a jumper which sets which carrier channel drives this modulator channel. So possible to make unusual combinations. It what was realized with patchcables at Moog Vocoder.

Noise Gate mutes filterbank output when no signal. Because 16 channels mixed can create noticeable background noise.

At the output 3 stereo mixers are installed. First for clean voice coming from mic amp and MOD input. Second for odd channels, third for even channels. All mixers with VC level and panorama.

Also there stereo send-return in/outs for adding effects. The idea was to make some spatial effects. For example - clean voice at the center, odd channels at the left, even channels at the right. And vocoder channels rotate modulated from external LFO. Even channels panorama CV input is normalled to odd pan CV input through an invertor. So this rotating effect is possible to make with single LFO."

In the video I'm comparing Nuvistor VCA to orther VCAs of L-1 vintage soviet collection, - Tube VCA 2П2П, Tube VCA 1Ж24Б, Germanium VCA.
I'm playing a melody with a triangle wave, then another melody with a saw wave, then I'm showing a waveforms.

Nuvistor is a type of vacuum tube. But instead of glass bulb it cased into metal can. It was top-notch of tubes development."
