Update: I originally noted this was an iPad.  It's clearly not.  If you look next to the thinnest cube you'll se what looks like ASUS, so I'm guessing it's an ASUS Tablet of course.   No additional details at the moment.   If you head to their site you'll note all the previous hardware is round.

This ground-breaking composition, from 18-year-old American pianist/composer Conrad Tao' debut full-length album Voyages, features Conrad using the Reactable Mobile app on his Apple iPad, incorporating both synth lines and real-time processing of his piano playing, via the iPad microphone. Conrad describes the piece as being inspired by the phenomenon of "fractured light, that appears differently depending on what angle you look at it from," while also incorporating the concept of modern technology and its ever-changing development.

Conrad was listed in Forbes' 30 under 30 list of noteworthy musicians in 2011 (the only classical musician featured), and hailed by renowned music critic Harris Goldsmith as "the most exciting prodigy to ever come my way" (Musical America).

"Reactable mobile is a modular music studio that uses the very same audio engine and graphics of the original hardware, allowing you a very intuitive and visual method for improvisation and song creation. The app gives you access to a very large range of exclusive content using the in-app community browser, which you can simply remix or use as source material for your own compositions. Reactable now has AudioBus support and audio copy/paste, which is a perfect combination for importing your own samples and recording either live or pre-recorded performances directly into other apps that also support AudioBus. It's probably better to have a decent grip on synthesis to get the most out of this app, but with such a large range of community table presets available, it is also a good way to learn synthesis in a very visual way. You do also get samplers, sequencers, effects and modulation modules to connect up in any fashion you like. You get 4 separate samplers that are able to load 4 samples each, so you can easily change sounds with the tap of a finger. The video below shows how to manipulate many of the parameters available, loading samples, drawing your own wave shapes and generally navigating a performance. The audio track is an example of a live performance recorded directly into Multitrack DAW using AudioBus. I have to admit that I'm a big fan of all modular styled apps, and this one is definitely one of the best. The inclusion of sampler modules with AudioBus connectivity certainly makes this a big favourite of mine, and the easy access to a large amount of community tables definitely makes this ... A Killer App!

"Lake Forest Academy Laptop Orchestra plays Squarepusher's "Hello Meow" during the Fall 2012 All School Concert. Members of the ensemble play iPads running various iOS performance/production apps including Animoog, iElectribe, iMS-20, Reactable, and Garageband. The 2 center players have synced their iPads using Korg's WIST protocol via iMS-20. The rest are playing free hand. Laptop Orchestra is offered as a class through the Fine and Performing Arts department alongside Orchestra and Choir and is a part of the school's electronic music program. Other courses include Electronic Music 1, Advanced Studies/Composition in Electronic Music, and independent studies."
