QUASIMIDI POLYMORPH SN 58081

"The Polymorph is basically four synths loaded with synth and drum sounds, geared towards electronica and other forms of synthesizer music. Individual ADSR's and filters per oscillator make for a totally tweakable and flexible synthesizer.

The sequencer: 16 step, 8 variations, 4 parts or instruments. Parts and even notes can be muted or changed in real time to build and decompose grooves or synth textures. There are also preset phrase patterns to play around with.

The PolyMorph is beefed up by a great set of effects. Add distortion, EQing, reverb, chorus, flange, etc. to each of the four parts independently! The controls, knobs and sequencer can all be controlled via MIDI for in-studio use, however the impressive multi-effects implementation alone is a major hint that the PolyMorph is a machine suited for live, DJ and on the fly music production."

Quasimidi Polymorph Song Demo

YouTube via Yorkshirelad69

"This short piece of music was used by Quasimidi to promote their virtual analogue Polymorph synthesizer module. It was available as a download on their website and was one of the reasons I bought one!

It seems that Klaus Schulze had quite a say in it's design and he also programmed many of the presets and sequences that came as standard on the Polymorph."

Quasimidi Polymorph Presets - Part 1

YouTube via Yorkshirelad69

"A tour through the 64 sequenced presets that come with the Quasimidi Polymorph. These should give you an idea of the kinds of sounds this Synth is capable of. All can be changed over-written. Each preset has 4 parts and each part its own FX. No external effects processor was used. This is the sound you get straight out of the box.

Part 2 will take you through some of it's user defined sounds, including Oberheim like pads, an excellent Mellotron choir and leads.

Sorry for the low quality video, the sound however, is excellent as it was recorded directly onto the PC (but a few seconds out of sync)."

Kraftwerk's QUASIMIDI POLYMORPH PROTO Up for Auction?

via this auction

"I am selling one - ultra-rare - Quasimidi Polymorph - PROROTYPE -Analog Emulation Synth. This Prototype was released before its official launch 1997 towards Betatesters and Projects. In this particular case we see the one that has been given to a very famous german electro-group. I received this one a couple years ago as a gift from one the members i worked for. I want to switch my gear-acquisitivenes to a new hobby and so for decided to sell this one into thankful hands.

Technically and musically we have a 4in1-Synth with inbuilt- Stepsequencer and rich possibilities for structuring Patterns. I like the fact, that it can -Stand-Alone- be very complex and twisted. Just like an Electribe, but not as flat as i think those Electribes sound. The Control is intuitive and fast. The Mixsection down right invites to realtime arranging. With this Gear you can just start and find yourself in senseful patterns. The Sound generators are dirty - cool - as well as "liquid" - even cooler - i personally hear a lo-fi version of the novation supernova synth - like Sounds in Aphex Twin´s "Windowlicker" or Kraftwerk´s "Expo2000".

What leads to one special feature for supposed fans of one particular famous german Electroband: I sell the Gear as i received it from the first OWner: The gear contained no preset patterns when it was delivered to the original owners. there ARE like 35 patterns saved. I saved none of those myself. Actually i stored this dustfree and dry in my gear collection. I just tested it before i took the shots. The Display shines healthy ( see pictures ) . There are no Expansions or single Outs installed - PROTOTYPE."

Quasimidi Polymorph Classic Rack Synth

via this auction

"A rare and sought after instrument. The descendant of the Quasimidi Rave-o-lution 309, the Polymorph was Quasimidi's final and most ambitious synth. Powerful, subtle, and deep. In addition to Quasimidi's powerful synth engine, it is the step sequencer that really sets this instrument apart. The step sequencer has 16 steps and 4 lines, 8 variations, and many sophisticated features that make this synth a truly inspirational resource for Techno and Trance, as well as "Berlin School" styles of electronic music. A favorite of Orbital and Jean-Michel Jarre. Klaus Schulze still makes extensive use of his famous "wall" that features seven Polymorphs, both in the studio and on stage."

Classic Quasimidi Polymorph sequence at 3:35, it builds up sooner but if you have a Polymorph it's instantly recognizable from that point on.

"Electronic Music from the golden Age. Sequencer based, chill out, ambient style. A Hommage to Klaus Schulze or Edgar Froese`s Tangerine Dream. Equipment used: Polymorph and Rave-o-lution 309 from Quasimidi, Access Virus, Akai Miniak, Korg MicroKorg, Omnisphere from Spectrasonics. Doepfer Dark Time Sequenzer. Quasimidi Polymorph Synthesizer / Sequencer SE

"Quasimidi Polymorph Synthesizer / Sequencer . From a smoke free professional studio. Fully functional and in great shape. I have had four of these and the encoders always feel loose and the parameters are jumpy, this unit must have been upgraded, because the encoders are precise and tight. I am the second owner and I believe it to be a special edition unit because of the silver color. Comes with the original power supply. It does need a new backlight , which is cheap and easy to replace, it never bothered me, thus I never did it. Thank you."

Quasimidi The Raven

images via this auction

"Built in 8 track sequencer on the Sirus/Polymorph tip. You can layer up to 4 sounds Built in samples are absolutely nutty, 303, 909, etc... It also functions as a great controller keyboard, just ask Kraftwerk This Raven Max is in great condition and 100% functional The Max expansion adds twice as much onboard samples and presets"

Update via Qwave in the comments:
"Notice the picture of the manual: it does show the Quasimidi in the studio of Klaus Schulze. One of the R&D persons of Quasimidi is Jörg Schaaf (now Mr. Spectralis) is a friend to Klaus. So he drop in from time to time and showed Klaus the new Quasimidi stuff then. Klaus Schulze still uses a Quasimidi as his main keyboard in a drawer below the mixer and the computer displays.

Klaus Schulze Black Quasimidi Polymorphs

Saw this posted on VSE by Shagghie.

"I'm forced to depart with the most incredible example of a quasimidi polymorph ever. It is one of K.S.'s black polymorphs from his 'wall' tour, complete with the original 'moogy' knobs he prefered, and running the latest OS and restore to original settings/condition. This is the one to own...and it sounds amazing. One of those pieces I swore I'd never sell...but life and finances are really pressing right now, and I'm not able to use it like it deserves to be used. I will include original manual, original PSU, and the black hard-case I store it in with custom foam fitting.

It's one of these, though I am not sure which one...perhaps the one he's reaching for?

You can see the actual one here in this video right around 1'20" into it:

Previously posted Serious Quasimidi / K.S. fans only. It doesn't get any better than this... $1500 / obo" Interesting. I didn't realize they were Black and made for Klaus Schulze with MOOG style knobs. If anyone has any close up shots of it, post a comment. I sent Shagghie a PM to see if he can take some for us before it sells. Update via Shagghie: "Hey Matrix....I did some digging at the request of someone and apparently Manikin Electronic (http://www.manikin-electronic.com) made a half dozen of these "Special edition black K.S. Polymorphs" that were a continuation on the 'K.S. factory run' they did for his wall originally in the first place. Still, a very limited/rare piece, however! Hence, i can't be positive that this actual unit is from K.S.'s wall! I don't want to give any wrong impressions given the way the post currently reads. A huge favor it would be if you could append this to the end as an 'update' from me? -shag" Update: Here's a shot of it (click for a bigger pic):

The Tangent Project Live Rig

via Jeff of The Tangent Project. The image is from 2008, however they will be playing live with most of the gear pictured this December. Details further below.

"Here's a summary of the kit:
The Tangent Project LIVE at The Gatherings from May 17, 2008
Jeff Coulter's live gear rig:

on the keyboard stand:
M-Audio O2
Quasimidi Polymorph
Novation Remote 61LE
Dave Smith Intruments Evolver Desktop
Mutron Phasor II
[and a sustain pedal underneath the stand]

on top of left rack:
EMS Synthi-A

in left rack:
Juice Goose power/light module
Mackie LM-3204 Line Mixer
Digitech Studio Quad V2
Digitech TSR-12

on top of right rack, top to bottom:
Korg MS2000R
Roland JP-8080
Novation A-Station
JL Cooper Nexus Plus MIDI Merger/Patch Bay

in right rack, top to bottom:
Doepfer MAQ 16/3 MIDI/Analog Sequencer
Waldorf Micro Q
JL Cooper PPS-100 Synchronizer [MIDI clock source]
Lexicon LXP-1
Lexicon MPX-100
E-MU ESI-4000 Turbo Sampler
CDROM/Hard Disk for E-MU Sampler

FYI: I'll be using almost the same rig, minus the Digitech Studio Quad and with the addition of a Roland JV-2080 that has 7 expansion board in it, when we play live at WXPN on December 5th for a small donor concert, then we'll be doing a live set during Star's End later - around 2:00 am. The real key to the setup is the MAQ 16/3 and the ability to control each row's parameters from the Novation Remote 61LE and to switch between controlling all the different synths as a track develops. Too bad the Novation Remote does not do splits - that would be even better. The M-Audio O2 is for controlling subsequences, transpositions, and a few specific parameters on the Polymorph.

[Details on ther performances:]
At around 8:30 pm we play for a small audience of special donors to the Star's End radio programme on WXPN FM in Philadelphia - about 20-25 people in total will be there. see:
http://www.starsend.org/premiums100409.html

Then at about 2:00 am we will play a live on-air set that can be streamed from XPN.org or heard in the station's listening area - Philadelphia and a couple other areas - see:
http://www.starsend.org/broadcast.html

This rig fits in the back of a pretty small station wagon and is capable of a HUGE amount of sound, plus it's quite versatile to go from one track to the next without missing a beat - I need to add a new device for MIDI clock generation, as the PPS-100 is not able to shift tempo on the fly - it does have 2 MIDI outs so I can keep the Doepfer and the Polymorph synced together for the entire show - neither has the best clock sync inside them - just try syncing them from a computer DAW and starting someplace other than measure 1 beat 1 - it's awful.

At some point I'll find just the right device for keyboard splits and MIDI clock. The CME VX series look quite capable, but I hear the build quality and documentation is rather dodgy."

Quasimidi Polymorph

via this auction

"The last and best of the legendary Quasimidi synths co-designed with Klaus Schulze! The 4 row analogue style sequencer on each synth (x1 pitch, x3 assignable to any function) has most playback functions easily accessible from the front panel which is great 'on the fly' tweaking, jamming or live performance and has loads of other exciting features unique to this machine. The dual HP/LP filters can be used in serial, parallel or coupled to together to form a variable width bandpass (with resonance) and are still the best filters I've heard this side of the digital curtain with a proper overdrive stage that fattens up the waveforms just like on a real analogue. The overall sound is very unique and much harder than most 'soft' sounding VA synths which really cuts through a mix. The on board distortion doesn't loose bass and has its own LPF (with resonance) which is ideal for hard acid or savage IDM but the Polymorph is also capable of slow smooth pads and cascading ambient sequences. You also have two audio in 's making the Poly into the ultimate gate FX unit. Almost all the parameters both internal and external respond to MIDI CC and all front panel knobs transmit MIDI CC for each part over 4 MIDI channels which is I found ideal for controlling softsynths with assignable parameters."
