"Brand New copy of the operating manual for the Jugg Box DPM-48 (also branded as Hammond DPM-48 and Sakata DPM-48). English language version, along with German language supplement. 86 pages, 6 inches by 9 inches in dimension, printed in black and white.
This book is also available from most Amazon online sites [https://amzn.to/3HsiZSw]
The DPM-48 programmable digital drum machine was first released in late-1983, and was available for sale in many countries under the brand names Nihon-Hammond, Sakata, Jugg Box, and Multivox.
Like several other drum machines that were available on the market at that time, the DPM-48 used digitally sampled sounds stored onto EPROMs. DPM stood for 'Digital Percussion Machine', and the '48' related to the 48 patterns that could be stored on the unit. Unusually, the DPM-48 used a special type of RAM cartridge for the storage of the patterns.
In mid-1984 an 'Electronic Drums' sound set of alternative EPROM chips featured on the DPM-48E model. The Electronic Set, along with Rock and Latin Percussion alternative sound sets became available for use with the DPM-48, along with a trigger interface that enabled electronic drum pads to use the Trigger Input located at the rear of the DPM-48 chassis. A MIDI-retrofit was also later made available, with the DPM-48 unit being discontinued in 1987 or so.
This Owner's Manual is an English-language limited edition publication, including a section on the MIDI capability for the DPM-48, info on the rare alternative sound sets, and a separate section at the rear with the original German language operating instructions for the DPM-48. (86 pages in total)."

Sakata DPM-48 (aka Multivox) DEMOS
video uploads by synthmaven

"Sakata DPM-48 drum machine aka Mulitvox or Jugg Box

The RAM cart works because you can't program the machine without it. I pulled it out and the machine won't go into RUM mode, I put it back in and it played again.
What makes the DPM-48 interesting for contemporary production use is that there is a company in Germany that offers a MIDI cart and expanded ROM sounds kit for this machine which you can find on Youtube. The MIDI cart uses the RAM cart slot, so no alterations to the machine are needed. This allows integration into a multi-machine recording environment and the additional sounds also pass though the circuitry of the DPM-48. You sync the standard DPM-48 via the included DIN sync port in the back, if you prefer to program the machine old skool using the cart."

"Sakata DPM-48 Vintage Drum machine
Made in Japan
Released 1984
220v
with MIDI kit updrade installed.
Rare musical instrument developed by Sakata, later distributed by Hammond. This digital drum machine uses same technology as Linndrum with samples on eproms. The MIDI kit (developed by FPB Synth Germany) is freshly installed for the sale.
Unfortunately, I lost the RAM card a while ago, so the pattern memories and internal sequencer are not usable… This said the MIDI kit upgrade allows you to control the drum machine from any device including modern sequencers!
So, you have access to the 22 samples via MIDI + you can trig manually at the same time.
Sounds are internally spread over a stereo field (stereo output), you also have independent mono outputs and a phones out . Of course you have the volume fader for each voice (8 sliders) and a general volume knob. So, a nice flexibility for studio environment.
Great sounding drum machine, punchy and pretty unique samples — the cymbals are really interesting. You know, 8-bit unsigned PCM sounds but realistic for the time… it delivers a great vintage flavour. As eprom based, you can totally custom your instrument. The sounds here are stock. One of the eprom has been cloned by FPB too."

sakata dpm-48 vintage drum computer
"Very rare Percussion Drummachine, made in Japan in the early 80's. The same machine was manufactured under the names Jugg Box DPM-48, and Hammond DPM-48.
The concept of this drummachine is to save the patterns on exchangeable memory cartridges. It offers 8 drumsound channels with 22 sounds in total, each of the channels individually adjustable in volume and with a non-dynamic trigger button. You can record step-by-step or in realtime with help of a built-in metronome. like new with cartridge ."

Rare Sakata DPM-48 drum machine 8 bit digital - MikeSynth
video upload by Mikus Pilatus
"The very interesting Sakata DPM-48 (also branded as Hammond)
A bit frustrating to program and you can’t change patterns on the fly - which is a buzz kill.
Shame , as the sound of it is like a Drumulator , but better."

For sale : Sakata dpm 48 (demonstration video)
YouTube via fuckingharpsichord | October 19, 2010
"Hi !
This is a Sakata Dpm 48, a drumcomputer made back in the 80s. Its allso known as 'Juggbox' or under the name of Hammond.
Its got din-sync in and output and seperatoutputs for all the instruments. I show how you can record a beat in realtime or stepmode. The sound is not perfect due too the fact its recorded straight into Youtube...
If you're intrested in buying this one send me a personal message ! I'm willing to send to it." [on YouTube]

"Just arrived : the Sakata dpm 48 ! A lot of force and drive behind those samples.
I think this is the second video, online, of this obscure piece of 80s-Japanese-metal. The echo thingie is a Melos Echo Chamber that I found yesterday on a junkyard."

Sakata DPM48

Shots and details pulled from this auction.
"Very nice condition cool sounding 80's drum machine with volume sliders, lots of knobs and individual outputs. It comes with its original box. A rare item, it sounds retro and dirty...looks oldschool, it has no optical damage whatsoever. The sequence module is included with this auction. Sync this to a analog synth and you are in electro heaven"

Update via Roberto in the comments: More on the Sakata DPM48.

Update via hinotori mortal in the comments:
"hi
i am the proud owner of 2 of the DPM-48 drum machines.
they were originally made by SAKATA a company which, to my knowledge, only ever produced this machine. . . its design and name were then bought out by HAMMOND, and hammond produced this machine for a short time. . . before they decided their leap into the world of drummachines was a waste. . .largely due to the painfully high price that hammond were marketing them at.... . the machine was then marketed by JUGGBOX.
they are EPROM based drum machines and are incredibly incredibly difficult to use without a manual .
i have a copy of the manual in japanese. . and this helps a little. . but if anyone has the manual in english please let me know . . . :)
the only person i have heard of using this machine was prince .
it has an amazing sound to it, if you love the LINNDRUM / DMX / DRUMULATOR . .
very punchy lo resolution hip hop sounds .
i have another version of this machine loaded with the "electronic drum set"
as there is little information about this machine anywhere, im unsure as to wether the "electronic" version was actually produced by JUGGBOX or by yet another company . .
it is easily synced to my tr606, having a din sync in and out i chain them together in serial .
there is currently a midified version of this machine on an auction site in japan going for around 500 GBP.
!!!!!!!
i will put images of my DPM48s onto my flickr account for those whoare interested.
if you want the DPM sounds without the hardware then they are included in NOSTALGIA . in the "rare beat boxes" section . . . of course ;) "

"My new house song titled "purple haze" using the Roland Juno-106 and the CasioCZ3000 synthesizers. This is a live-mix, no overdubbing.
Enjoy.

Note one of the sampled drums is the Sakata DPM-48. Anyone know what that is?
Found it in the archives: link. Note they appear to have manufactured the Oberheim Matrix-6 and Xpander in Japan.
