RMIF OPUS - Unique synth pulsations

video upload by LFOstore

"The RMIF Opus (РМИФ Oпус) is a rare analogue string machine/synthesizer made in Riga, Latvia by the Riga Musical Instrument Factory (RMIF) in the year 1988.

The sound range is five octaves and the instrument consists of 4 sections — piano, that synthesizes piano like lead soundings of different timbres, analog string machine, that plays wonderful string sounds with soft attack and with the possibility to control release, tremolo and the pereodically repeated beat-fading sounds.

A flexible bass section, that is controlled by 2 lower octaves, that contain three 8' and two 16' registers.

The Opus is based on divide-down technology with a master oscillator and has very nice multimode filter (LPF, BPF and HPF with resonance), a fantastic chorus, ring modulator, vibrato and a lot other features."

Deeply Flawed, Utterly Charming: RMIF TI-5 Synthesizer

video upload by HAINBACH

"The RMIF TI-5 "Digital Keyboard", an 8-Voice analog/digital hybrid synth, is little known, even in former Soviet countries. As they did on the ES-2-5 drum machine I covered here before, it seems that the engineers in Riga took a look at what Roland was doing, taking inspiration from the Juno-line. Unlike the famously sturdy Japanese instruments, the TI-5 was built rather haphazardly, with bad clones of western chips managing the voices and processing. That is why only few survived the test of time. Yet despite its shortcomings it sounds utterly charming, managing both deep Moog-basses, vast evolving pads and chiptune leads.

"The Roland JX-3P is a powerful, versatile analog polysynth that blends vintage warmth with early digital control. This unit includes the essential PG-200 programmer (with cable) for full hands-on access to the synth’s architecture, bringing out the instrument’s real potential for sound design.

This example is in excellent condition, includes the original Roland cases specifically designed for the keyboard (hardshell carrying case with Roland logo) and the programmer (original vinyl slipcover with logo), and has been professionally converted to US voltage internally. Everything functions as it should, with a clean panel and smooth operation.

Key Features:

6-voice analog polyphony with 2 DCOs per voice
Classic Roland chorus effect
Oscillator sync, cross-mod, and LFO modulation
Built-in 128-step sequencer
Includes PG-200 programmer for real-time control
MIDI input/output
Condition Notes:

Converted to US voltage
PG-200 and synth are both fully functional
Cosmetic condition is excellent
Original Roland case included
The JX-3P was one of Roland’s first MIDI-equipped analog synths, used by artists like The Future Sound of London, Astral Projection, and Orbital. With the PG-200, it transforms from a preset machine into a true performance synth, with rich modulation, powerful sync tones, and that unmistakable Roland polish.

Theme From A Summer Place by Percy Faith (1959)
Written from Max Steiner

I used my old soviet trio RMIF Opus string synthesizer, Elektronika EM-26 vocoder/strings, Alisa 1377 analog synthesizer and some orchestral samples from my Emax sample library.

This cover song series contains my own recreations of my favourite songs from the last 50 years. The original music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I recreate tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these tracks.
My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original (if you want to hear identical sounds, please listen the original). It's more of an inspiration with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers."

My four soviet synths in one track 🎹
The title called ~Newski Prospekt~ ✨

The track are made with the following gear:
Formanta Polivoks (1982)
Rodina Alisa 1377 (1985)
RMIF Opus (1986)
Elektronika EM-26 (1992)

The Nevsky Prospekt (Невский проспект) is a 4.5-kilometre-long street in the historic center of Saint Petersburg and one of the most famous streets in the world. The street was laid out between 1711 and 1721 as a link between the Admiralty in the west and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in the east of the city. From the middle of the 18th century, it increasingly developed into a boulevard as the numerous local aristocrats had their residences built here. I have walked along this street several times myself and have always been impressed by its beauty and vibrancy. The street is the heart of the city. And Saint Petersburg is deeply rooted in my heart.

The video sequences and street ambience are made by my friend Natalja Smirnowa in january 2025"

The Massive Sound Of An Experimental Soviet Drum Machine

video upload by HAINBACH

This appears to be the first post to feature the RMIF ES-2-5.

"The RMIF ES-2-5 is an experimental drum machine that was made in Riga, Latvia, in the last days of the Soviet Union (1991). It was an attempt at re-creating the Roland TR-808, but was hampered by the lack of microchip technology available. RMIF abandoned the project after only a testing run of 30 units where made. One rare surviving example found its way to my studio in a sorry state. I had it restored to better then new condition, as I feel it is a piece of instrument history. And it sounds so very very heavy and melancholic.
