"These were only made for a short time and from what I can find about them there was only 600 of them made. Here's your chance to own a very nice and clean one.
-everything functions as it should, has been reset to factory settings.
-This keyboard is in very nice shape, very little scuffing and signs of use, very clean!
-For whatever reason the cosmetic portion of the volume slider is missing, no problem using as it is or could be replaced easily.
-The unit was brought in from out of the country and was then professionally modified for use with 120V AC electricity, so to be clear, it is configured currently for 120 volt AC for the United States.

The Technics SX-WSA1 puts you at the controls. Nearly all modeling parameters can be accessed in realtime by using various easy-to-operate controllers such as the Pitchbend and Modulation wheels, Realtime Controller, Realtime Creator, Key Touch and more. The Realtime Creator and Realtime Controller each allow you to control 2 parameters at one time (X-Y axes). The Realtime Creator knob maintains the last set position, while the Realtime Controller returns to its neutral position. In addition, up to six sets of parameters can be stored for each sound, allowing rapid assignment to the Realtime Creator or Realtime Controller! This makes it possible to control, for example, where you strike the drum surface, the mouthpiece angle on a flute, or the embouchure of a trumpet. These controllers give you the freedom to fully express yourself in your music. At last, your creativity is limited only by the imagination.
Sounds that are out of this world:
The Technics SX-WSA1 also gives you the power to create a virtually unlimited range of instrument sounds. For the first time, you're no longer restricted by the sound sets in your instrument. Imagine, you now have full control over the parameters for the driver and resonator. This lets you form unique combination sounds like a tom-tom "fusing" into a chopper bass, or a guitar with a flute resonator. Sounds can be "crossfaded" by key or velocity. Even more astonishing, you can construct virtual instruments that cannot be built in reality. Now, that's really out of this world!

It would be a shame not to have sufficient polyphony. That's why this synthesizer features not one, but 64-note polyphony—the culmination of Technics' outstanding achievements in advanced LSI research. With 64-note polyphony, you have all you need fully orchestrate your music.

The Technics WSA1 features a large graphic LCD screen which makes its operation both intuitive and extremely user-friendly. The 16-track, 47,000 note Sequencer includes some graphical editing capability. There are two MIDI ports (IN/OUT/THRU) to allow you to make the most of the 32 MIDI parts available (32-part multi-timbral), and there are four line-level outputs (two stereo pairs) to get it all to tape or the PA. Acoustic Modeling Synthesis, a method to combine PCM waveform drivers with custom digital signal processing modeling resonators, is a way to simulate the sound process of acoustic instruments. It gives players full control over the parameters for the driver and resonator, and is a great system for anyone who wants to move far beyond the preset sound sets.
Unique sound combinations are possible and these can also be crossfaded by key or velocity. For anyone used to synthesizers that were restricted to their presets and ROM samples, this was a revelation. Technics were also able to accomplish 64 notes of polyphony."

What is Acoustic Modelling Synthesis?
Putting theory into practice is Technics' latest breakthrough in synthesis technology - Acoustic Modelling Synthesis. While retaining the much-coveted qualities of conventional PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) subtractive sound reproduction, Acoustic Modelling Synthesis combines PCM waveform drivers with custom DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Modelling resonators.
By first extensively analyzing the nature of acoustic sound, Acoustic Modelling Synthesis then digitizes the physical process recreating it. This technology ideally simulates the sound-emulating process of acoustic instruments.
Nearly all modelling parameters can be accessed in real-time by using various on-board controllers and key touch. Additionally, by manipulating the Realtime Creator / Controller along the X-Y axis, the user can control up to six parameter sets registered for each sound.

"Only about 600 of these were made and are somewhat difficult to find. This is the Technics Wsa1 acoustic modeling synthesizer! A very unique workstation from the 90s that was light-years ahead of its time. This was very similar to the mythical Yamaha VP1 which is basically a unicorn of a synthesizer since there were only 3 sold.
Sounds:
The wsa1 was an acoustic modeling synthesizer that emulates acoustic nuances and features resonators and drivers to drastically change different sounds. The keyboard really shines with pads and orchestral sounds.
The soundcloud link below demonstrates some sounds from it. All sounds came from this keyboard plus some reverb and chorus.
Features:
I can't fully describe what this thing can do but it features a built in sequencer that can be manipulated in real time. With 64 note polyphony almost anything is possible. Has multiple editing parameters.
The wsa was released in 1995 with a hefty price tag of $5,000! But now they go for less but are pretty uncommon since they are fairly unknown.
Condition:
Every button and knob is working as a new one."

This was just a typical filter synth sound, until I stepped on the sustain pedal, and then it became this gorgeous pad sound!
Tweaking the X-Y track ball made it even sweeter :)"

"Overview:
64-polyphonic GM synthesizer.
5MB PCM ROM. The samples are mostly GM-based, but there are some interesting waveforms like Roland D-50 / D-110 and KORG M1 as well.
3-OSC architecture.
The filter has resonance but no envelope.
"Distortion" can be added to each oscillator. It's actually fast vibrato - a kind of Roland JV's FXM, but KN2000's modulation frequency is lower, and it sounds more like vibrato. With "Growl" option, the FXM is applied only to the attack portion of the sound.
One "Digital Effect", one reverb and one "DSP effect." The digital effect seems to be non-DSP, oscillator-based chorus/delay like old PCM synths (Kurzweil K1000).
The digital effect includes "Repeat delay", which seems to looping the attack portion of the waveform.
Drum samples are looped to make reverb-like effect - a rare feature first implemented in YAMAHA RX5 / PTX8.
A big 320*240 LCD display with lots of buttons around.
FD drive to store sounds and sequences.
The data can be stored via MIDI SysEx. Unfortunately, it has to be used in the bulk dump mode.
It would be impossible to make a PC editor for this synth"
Update via spunkytoofers: "it does physical modelling although it's a different approach. it starts with anywhere up to 4 drivers which are samples. the drivers feed up to 4 resonators and those can be blended, triggered, x-y, modulated, etc in alot of different ways.
the yamaha vl1 actually modelled the driver waveform which took up alot of dsp power so the technics used the sample driver waveforms to cut back on the processing and offer polyphony. whereas the vl1 could only handle 2 notes at a time.
i'm told the vl1 can't be touched in the physical modelling realm for realism but it seems really random and more mathematical then musical to setup it and the editors for it are lots of text boxes. but the technics seems alot more approachable and intutive. and easier to visualize "i want to make a reed vibrate a drum head and cross resonate that in a cello body and do that rather than the vl approach.. so it makes alot of sense to me!!! i'm just getting into it but i love the synth so far.."

"This is a remarkable synthesiser launched by Technics in 1995. Technics did not produce them in large numbers because they were very expensive when launched at nearly £2,200. At the time, and even by today’s standards, it was revolutionary combining samples as the drivers for a physical modelling synthesiser. By using samples as the drivers, Panasonic Technics were able to produce a powerful 32-channel multi-timbre synthesiser with 64 notes polyphony. This means you can use the WSA1R for large productions and layered sounds.
Although deep in its capability, the WSA1R is easy to programme because it has an excellent user interface. The interface comprises of a large display and many function keys. The synth can produce some very powerful sounds with a lot of expression and dynamics. In my experience it produces much more expression than a typical modern sample-based synthesiser. It also has a two-axis joystick “ball” which you can modulate the sounds in real time.
The module has a floppy drive which can take 720kb and 1.44mb disks. The drive can be used to back-up sounds and also play standard midi files directly from disk. This, combined with its GM setting, makes it a great synth for playing back tracks live or in the studio for practice.
