This Drum is a Synthesizer!!!

video upload by Dylan Ferno

"This is a tutorial on how to get a variety of different sounds out of a steel tongue drum and handpan, without and added external effects from guitar pedals or a computer.

I compare sound design techniques on a Kosmosky 12 inch double sided drum to the Sonicware Liven Ambient 0 Synthesizer to demo how to replicate electronic effects acoustically to add different sound quality to your music.

Some of the techniques used here apply to other instruments like guitar, pianos and other percussion instruments, but some are unique to the steel tongue drum due it's unique form, timbre, and long sustain.

How to Make the Korg Volca FM Sound More Analog!

video upload by Dylan Ferno

"How to Make the Korg Volca FM Sound More Analog:
Quick tips on how to make a digital FM synth, such as the Korg Volca FM, have a more analog sound. Learn about the differences between digital Vs. analog synths and how to steer your synth in that direction to improve your sound design. This video explores some simple tweaks to get a richer, warmer sound with:

1. Pitch Instability - Add detuning with LFO, add chorus

2. Harmonics - First increase decay on mod envelope knob to remove envelope snappiness. Put in mono or unison mode. Next Lower ratios of operators (FrEC). Ratio of 0 is bassier, a 1:1 ratio is more saw-wave like, and 1:2 is more square-wave like. Adjust velocity and algorithm to taste.

3. Warmth with feedback - Add noise/distortion by increasing feedback between levels of 5 to 7. Adjust algorithm and velocity accordingly.

Final step (Optional): Add more pitch instability by slightly increasing operator fine control (FrEF)

Vocal Ambient EP ( Liven Ambient 0 + Roland E-4)

video upload by Dylan Ferno

"Making a DAWless experimental Vocal Ambient EP with the Sonicware Liven Ambient Zero and the Roland E4 (Aira Compact)

I've been inspired lately by the Album, Secret Life, by Fred Again and Brian Eno, which is basically just glitchy autotuned vocal mantras over chill piano chords and drones. The album Bad Cameo by Lil Yachty and James Blake was also some inspiration for this one."

Instant Blade Runner Sounds with Any Analog Synth (Stylophone Gen X-1 Example)

video upload by Dylan Ferno

"Making Instant Blade Runner Sounds with a dark spacey patch that can be applied to almost any Analog Synth. I mean I am using the Dubreq Stylophone Gen X-1 synth as an example, which is like the most budget cheap analog synth around. So if it can be done on this synth, it can pretty much be done with basic sound design with anything else."
