"…ok, any synth with a sequencer 😉.

Marvelling over the synths out there that have fancy sequencer functions to keep sequences evolving and spontaneous (probability, punch-in effects etc) got me thinking. What about the beautifully simple, primitive synths, particularly the older models, that don't have those functions? You can be so creative on them, and people are forgetting how to be. So here are 5 (of MANY - and please do share any others in the comments that you've discovered and love to use) things you can do to keep your sequences sounding characterful and stay interesting. Yes, on any synth.

Super Gemini - Hazel Mills' Split Mode Exploration

"More from Hazel and the Super Gemini, this time giving us an exploration of Split Mode.

Within Split Mode, the upper and lower layers are mapped either side of a split point on the keyboard, with the 20 available voices split evenly between the two. The upper layer is assigned to all keys above the designated split point, while the lower layer is assigned to all keys below. For a "Pro hack", hold the SPLIT button, and you can set the split point by pressing a key.

This feature opens up a wealth of opportunities, ultimately giving you the possibity to control two "seperate instruments" on one keyboard!

"Hazel's back with another awe inspiring performance using the Super 6 Keyboard and Desktop.

Taking inspiration from Steve Reich, Hazel built this Minimalist composition by programming a simple, repating sequence on the Desktop with subtle variation. Over time, with the addition of a gorgeous pad on the Keyboard, this accumilates and builds into an uplifting, hypnotic sequence, made all the better by a simple four-to-the-floor kick.

When paired together, the Desktop and Keyboard can be extremely powerful and immediate, making performances like this a joyus and playful journey in sound.
