Yamaha PSS-130 | $20 dollar thrift store find

video upload by Wake Rise Fall

"Picked up a 'brand new' Yamaha Portasound PSS-130 still in the box from a thrift store for $20 a couple weeks ago. Made this little track with a few drums samples to share some of its sound. It's goofy but it makes noise so I'll find a use for it somewhere."

Touch capacitive controls? Thought this was interesting as there are no buttons on it.

The PSS-130 came out in 1987 according to Wikipedia.

You can find demos in previous posts here.

"modifications include:
extreme-range pitch knob with toggle, affects note pitch and rhythm speed/pitch
1/4" line in-that's right, send signals through the unit (mp3 player, instrument, drum track etc.) and use it as an effects box or amplifier.
Photo-theremin, wave your hand over the eye and produce a range of sounds, depending on what other mods are engaged
video in and out rca ports, run a dvd player or other video sourcethrough it with the two included quality RCA cables
1/4" line out
on-board speaker toggle on/off
main volume knob
line in volume knob (less volume = more filtration through effects)
sweet orange paint job with yellow and brown keys and yellow logo, matching orange knobs
4 body contacts, some of which are ground-sensitive
key volume knob (independent of drums, also affects other mods) with toggle and momentary kill
4 tone generating switches which trigger random notes from their respective quarter of the keyboard in the selected tone, stimulated by drums, line in, etc.
8 other knobs with that do crazy things like digitally modulated distortion, stepped tonal feedback, oscillation etc. Some of these have "momentary on" buttons, all have toggles.
The 4 components to the left of the keys are linked: a feedback module with toggle on/off, momentary on button, knob for high/low frequency and a dry/wet knob.
40 added external components total

This thing is seriously wild. Lots of fun and serious recording to be had with this machine, squealing analog/digital high warbles and cascades and buzzing granular lo-fi lows. Useful stair-stepped tone generation and glitching, see video for a small sample of the range of sounds and sights that can be produced."

HandySynth Teaser from Icebreaker Audio on Vimeo.

Coming February 3rd from Icebreaker Audio

http://www.icebreaker-audio.com

"Icebreaker Audio has released the ToyBreaker Bundle for Native Instruments' Kontakt 5 platform, a collection of 3 retro keyboards from the 80s.
PortaSynth is an emulation of a circuit-bent Yamaha PortaSound PSS-130 from 1987. It also includes PortaDrums – a drum machine based on the percussion samples from the same instrument.
Calc-U-Synth is a full emulation of the Casio VL-Tone's programmable synth engine. It features faithful emulations of all of the VL-Tone's parameters.
HandySynth is an emulation of a circuit bent Yamaha HandySound HS-200.
ToyBreaker Bundle owners also get an exclusive battery kit of drum samples taken from several toy keyboards from the 80s.

All instruments were sampled chromatically at 24bit 48kHz quality and contain a selection of on-board effects, including filters distortion and advanced speaker emulation options.

The ToyBreaker Bundle is available now from the Icebreaker Audio website for £12.50 (€15.5 / $20 approx.)"
