In 1993 Roland released the JD-990, a synth module that has grown into a cult phenomenon. Many hail this as the greatest Roland synth module ever.
As with the JD-800, the 990 was forgotten at first. Few people saw the potential as it came between the popular JV-80 (and module 880) in 1992 and the mega popular Super JV-1080 that came in 1994.
Compared to the JD-800 this enhances pretty much everything. Some key differences are:
- More waveforms, 195 vs 108 on the 800
- The ability to pan each TONE individually, essential to make it so wide and lush
- A matrixed modulation setup
- Oscillator sync
- Effect structures
- Filter can self-oscillate
- Delays can be tempo synced to MIDI
- You can add a random modulation to a sound, sort of emulate drifting oscillators
- One slot for adding a SR-JV expansion card (the famous SR-JV80-04 vintage card comes to mind)
Here is a demonstration of what the '90's Future Pad' patch sounds like from the SR-JV80-04 Vintage Synth expansion card, powered by my Roland JD-990 synthesizer, paired with a midi controller. These sounds are straight from the synthesizer, the only tweaks that I made were minor volume adjustments. Thank you for watching and listening to my video! I still think having this expansion board is a MUST HAVE in any
studio -small or large. I love it love it love it!! A keeper for sure!
Still worth the buy on Ebay if you want to add some Analog & Digital
spice to your old school Roland JV, XP, XV synthesizers
that support SR-JV80 expansion boards!!
Recorded into Ableton Live 9 by hand one track at a time! :)

If you are a fan of these kinds of keyboards you need to get these expansion boards for your JV, JD, XP, or XV synthesizer or workstation ASAP! Perfect for any track, they sounds warm & SWEET! A+++ Some might complain about older tech, but I love the SR-JV80 expansion board patches over the SRX board patches. It's just me, I know... LOL but they just PLAY BETTER to me. I used a ROLAND JV-2080 you see in the pictures & the patch names are the exact ones you hear as the pic go by... So enjoy & I am not actually trying to play the cover songs so don't complain about how wrong I am, I am just giving the flavor of the sounds :)
