EMS Universal Sequencer driving Roland MC-202 and SH-101

video upload by analogia pl

"One 'layer' of Universal Sequencer sequences the MC-202 and the other 'layer' is used to play the SH-101 live.

I don’t know what it is with EMS, but each time you get to play one of their quirky and unusual designs, you get a new kind of feeling — as if these sometimes bulky and obsolete electronics are very much alive.

Let’s be frank: there are a million simpler ways to play an SH-101 or an MC-202. But somehow, using the Universal Sequencer makes those classic synths feel completely different."

EMS Universal Sequencer externally triggered

video upload by analogia pl

"Let’s get nerdier. Someone asked if the Universal Sequencer can be triggered from the outside world. Of course it can! What I did here was a recording a sequence into the Uniseq that would play the MC-202, switched trigger to external, then recorded a sequence into the SH-101 and use gate out from 101 to externally trigger in of the Uniseq. It works like a charm."

"I bought this from analogia.pl (i.e., Maciej Polak, check out his album 1977!) in 2022, serviced and converted to North American power. This synth is a little limited, but it sounds great and the portability can't be beat. It also has two features that (as far as I know) are unique to this model among early Korgs: the "bender" buttons and the "Phaser" waveform. As far as I can tell "Phaser" is a very nicely dialed-in pulse width modulation that sounds especially nice in the lower registers.

No major issues in testing, but two notes:

The output jack was a little intermittent when I started testing, but after working a 1/4" plug in and out of it the signal is solid. Guessing it was a little dirty and could eventually use a cleaning if you're handy. The "Traveller" slider is a little stiff around the center of its travel. All audio passes great, so this is really a "feel" thing and something I've also noticed on some (but not all) other early Korgs. In great cosmetic shape overall, but there are many little blemishes and signs of wear, which I tried my best to capture in the photos."

Maciek Polak "Remaining exercises For Synthi AKS Solo"

video uploads by analogia pl

"In 2016 and 2017, while working on the debut album for my band Pin Park, I recorded a few hundred tracks. Around 200 survived the first cut, and that number was eventually trimmed down to 50. These recordings were literally rescued by Marcin BociƄski from legatomastering.pl after I had forgotten about them for quite some time.

The setup I used was extremely limited: an EMS Synthi AKS (occasionally a VCS3), an EMS Vocoder 100, and three Boss pedals (looper, reverb, and distortion). Everything was recorded onto a low-quality Zoom device running through a substandard mixer. Each track was captured in a single take with no overdubs, which meant there was no real possibility for mixing. Marcin’s mastering work was nothing short of amazing, bringing these raw recordings to life.

In 2018, Apekwolf Records released 14 of these tracks. The remaining 36 were never made available—until now. Enjoy!"

CV/gate for EMS Synthi or VCS3 = instant MIDI fun

video upload by analogia pl

"This is one of many videos I've been uploading on IG that feature Papa's CV/gate card - an absolutely indispensable tool for any EMS owner. Add a MIDI-CV converter and you're now in MIDI heaven.

What's happening in this video: CVs and gate are supplied from 2oh2 - Tubbutec modded Roland MC-202. I'm sending CV on channel 1 of 2oh2 to oscillator 1 of the Synthi and another CV channel of the 2oh2 to oscillator 2. Gate comes from channel 1 of the 2oh2.

You can order the CV/gate card here: https://www.portabellabz.be/cvgate.html"

Maciek Polak "Synthi 100 non-tunes"

video uploads by analogia pl

"All tracks were recorded between July 16–18, 2019 at KSYME (Contemporary Music Research Center) in Athens on their Synthi 100. I call them "non-tunes" because they were never intended for release. However, since someone asked about my Synthi 100 experience in Athens, I asked my colleague Marcin Bocinski (legatomastering.pl) to mix and master the recordings."

EMS Synthi vs. RSF Kobol (aka England vs. France)

video upload by analogia pl

"This is one of many sound studies I’ve called England vs. France, which will eventually be released as an album. I’ve used EMS synths for over two decades, but my life changed after I came into possession of the Kobol — one of the least popular, yet absolutely fascinating, monosynths."

Vintage Korg PS-3300 jam (from Maciek Polak’s album „1977”)

video upload by analogia pl

"This vintage Korg PS-3300 jam was recorded in one take without external processing through a single mono output. It was sequenced by Polyend Seq sequencer. It made it to "1977" and is now called "Moshi Moshi".

This tune and many others can be found on „1977” - vinyl, CD and digital are available at: maciekpolak.bandcamp.com"
